A Dumbledore show starring Jude Law could be heading to HBO Max
Despite the controversy surrounding Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, the Fantastic Beasts franchise is forging ahead. The franchise's star Eddie Redmayne confirmed this week that filming for Fantastic Beasts 3 has resumed following coronavirus delays.
Now, it looks like there may be even more in store within the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Warner Bros. is reportedly developing an Albus Dumbledore spinoff series for HBO Max. The show will star Law who plays the legendary wizard in the Fantastic Beasts films.
According to We Got This Covered, the prequel about Dumbledore is being tossed around at the streaming service. The series would be centered around a younger Dumbledore in between the Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter events.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald severely underperformed at the U.S. box office in 2018. Given the poor reception and low turn out, there's a lot riding on Fantastic Beasts 3 to perform well.
Law is starring as Dumbledore in the next Fantastic Beasts film alongside Redmayne and Johnny Depp. Redmayne revealed this week that returning to set amid the pandemic has been different, but the cast and crew have already completed two weeks of filming.
"It's interesting because we've started shooting now," Redmayne says. "We're two weeks in, and again, it's a whole new process. It's a whole new normal. Testing frequently, masks. And I wondered, actually, whether the masks would affect creativity, in some ways. Maybe that was a bit ignorant, but I just thought, as humans, do we need interaction to spark from each other. What is really reassuring is that it is a different process, but it still feels like it's fizzing and that everyone is working at the top of their game."
The plot is anticipated to focus on the complex relationship between Grindelwald, played by Depp, and Law's Dumbledore. Rowling confirmed back in June 2019 that she had started writing the script for Fantastic Beasts 3.
