The Riverdale fandom was rocked hard earlier this year after news broke that two prominent characters are leaving the show after season 4. Skeet Ulrich who played FP Jones, Jughead’s father, and Marisol Nichols who played Hermione Lodge, Veronica’s mother, announced they would be leaving the hit series after four seasons.

Now, Cole Sprouse is revealing how he really feels about Ulrich’s departure from Riverdale. He also commented on Ulrich’s reason for why he left the show.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic forced Riverdale production to shut down unexpectedly earlier this year. Due to this, only 19 of the 22 episodes in season 4 were filmed and the current season of the Archie Comics adaptation came to an early end on May 6.

As Riverdale‘s showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a recent interview, the change in production schedule could impact season 5’s arrival. However, he did share that season 5 will start off with a prom episode. Filming for the prom episode, that was supposed to air in season 4, was cut short due to the production shutdown.

Along with these changes, however, Riverdale fans can also anticipate season 5 to carry on without two of the show’s biggest characters – FP Jones and Hermoine Lodge. While fans were still processing the news that Ulrich and Nichols would not be returning for the fifth season, Ulrich shared in an Instagram Live video the reason why he decided to leave the show.

“I’m leaving Riverdale because I got bored creatively,” Ulrich says. “How’s that? That’s the most honest answer.”

Now, Sprouse, who plays Ulrich’s son Jughead, is revealing what he thinks about Ulrich’s departure.

In a new interview with Variety, Sprouse was asked if he too has ever felt “bored creatively” while on Riverdale. In his response, the actor addresses the contrast between his character of Jughead and Ulrich’s character.

“I think it’s easy, as an actor, especially on a long-term project to start feeling like, creatively, you’re repeating the same motifs or, or whatever it is,” Sprouse says. “But in truth, Jughead was a much more prominent character than FP was on the show. So, I don’t think I’m really qualified to talk on that because to compare and contrast our two positions is sort of fruitless.”

Sprouse also reveals if there is any tension or bad blood between Ulrich following his sudden departure.

“Skeet’s truly a second father to me, so I’m, like, ride or die for that guy,” he says. “So, anything that makes that guy happy is something that makes me happy.”

Back in January, the CW confirmed that Riverdale has been renewed for season 5. As well, Katy Keene, Riverdale‘s spinoff series starring Lucy Hale, began airing its first season back in February. Season 4 of Riverdale is now available to stream on Netflix.
