Murphy and Paulson have teamed up again for the new series Ratched. The duo has joined forces for multiple seasons of American Horror Story over the years. As well, Paulson starred in Murphy’s The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story in 2016.

Now, they are back together again for Ratched. The new Netflix series tells the origin story of the villainous nurse in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

In the first look trailer, Paulson emulates a young Nurse Ratched in 1947 Northern California. The series depicts Nurse Ratched starting her job at a psychiatric hospital where she conducts distributing experiments. It also shows her time working as a nurse during the war.

The series was created by Evan Romansky and is executive produced by Murphy. From the looks of the new trailer, the show is the perfect mix of Murphy’s past work. The series’ sinister undertones will be familiar to all those AHS fans out there. As well, Ratched‘s setting and design work are reminiscent of Netflix’s Hollywood.

Nurse Ratched originated in Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. The book was later adapted into an Oscar-winning 1975 movie starring Jack Nicholson.

Alongside Paulson, Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis and Sharon Stone are just of few of the actors starring in the upcoming show. The show’s official synopsis is available to read below.

“In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind. On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.”

During a recent TCA panel, Paulson also announced that she is directing an episode of Murphy’s American Horror Stories. The forthcoming spinoff series will air exclusively on FX and Hulu. A lot of information is still unknown about American Horror Stories. However, we do know that the series will include “one-hour contained episodes.”

Ratched heads to Netflix on Sept. 18.
