See how Katy Perry and Taylor Swift influenced Sharptooth’s new video

Hardcore band Sharptooth hit us with a big announcement this week. On July 10, they will be releasing their new album Transitional Forms on Pure Noise Records. In celebration of the announcement, Sharptooth have released a music video that reimagines some of pop music’s most iconic videos.

On Thursday, the band released a music video for their new single “Say Nothing (In The Absence Of Content)” that references some of pop music’s biggest artists including Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Kesha, and Katy Perry.

It’s been nearly three years since Sharptooth’s debut full-length LP Clever Girl was released. Now, the band are taking their music to a whole new level with Transitional Forms. In comparison to 2017’s Clever Girl, Sharptooth promise that their second full-length LP has a lot more to it.

“Sonically, if Clever Girl was a Velociraptor, Transitional Forms is a goddamn Tyrannosaurus rex,” vocalist Lauren Kashan says. “This record is so much heavier and darker than its predecessor, and, I think, a significant maturation of our sound.”

Along with the announcement of the new album, Sharptooth have shared the music video for their new single “Say Nothing (In The Absence Of Content)” that is sure to turn some heads. Taking some of pop culture’s most popular female-led music videos, Sharptooth created their own reimagined video that is both entertaining and tackles some big social issues in music.

The video opens up with a reference to Swift‘s 2014 “Shake It Off” music video. With the band dressed in all black and Kashan in Swift’s signature black turtleneck and jeans, the band open up the song against a white backdrop that heavily resembles the “Shake It Off” music video.

Along with the “Shake It Off” reference, the “Say Nothing (In The Absence Of Content)” video also includes reimagined clips of Katy Perry‘s “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, and Kesha. Kashan even sports the iconic “California Gurls” purple wig.

Sharptooth’s main goal for this pop-inspired music video is to tackle toxic hypermasculinity in music head-on.

“I wanted to take the sonic aspects of a genre that is so rooted in hypermasculinity—often to the point of toxicity—and steep it in things that a lot of culture looks down on, and that I absolutely happen to adore: femininity and mainstream pop music,” Kashan says.

Kashan also took to Instagram this week to share how important both the new music video is to her and the “girl gang” that helped make it happen.

“This video means A LOT to me,” Kashan says. “But what means the most to me are all of the people who jumped to help make it possible. Thank you to @anthonyaltamura, the @cicadaboston team, @stacyblackadar, @katyhamm, @glitterkittencorpse, @a_salty_chan, @meg_gray6, and the rest of my Girl Gang, this video absolutely could not have happened without all of your help. I love you all.”
