Spiritbox release evocative acoustic version of their song “Constance”

Spiritbox have released an acoustic reimagining of their song “Constance.” First released in December 2020, the new track features a delicate string-trio accompaniment that uplifts the evocative vocals.

The track was recorded as part of the GRAMMY Museum’s “COLLECTION:live#spotlightsaturdays series in partnership with BMG. Watch Spiritbox’s candle-lit live performance of the song from inside a church here.

Guitarist Mike Stringer spoke about the process of creating an acoustic version of “Constance” in a press release.

“This live version of ‘Constance’ was a very ambitious project for us,” Stringer says. “Before we left to start recording Eternal Blue, I had a rough demo of an acoustic version of ‘Constance’ written. While we were tracking the album, the GRAMMY Museum asked us if we’d want to contribute to their ‘COLLECTION:live’ series with a live acoustic/stringed composition of the song. Of course, this was a huge honor for us and something we couldn’t turn down, but it posed a challenge as we were recording in the middle of the desert, and I had never written a string composition before. After learning how to turn midi into notation, and some back and forth with our producer Dan Braunstein and violinist Haruka Horii, we had a version we were confident in. This was the first time we had ever performed this song live, and the addition of the strings by Horii, Bonnie Brooksbank and Mark Bassett really brought this whole thing to life. Putting this together was a great experience, and I hope to explore more acoustic compositions in the future with Spiritbox.”

In addition, the group announced a limited-edition seven-inch vinyl release of the track. The picture disc features a blue butterfly on the top, just like the ones vocalist Courtney LaPlante wore on her sweater in the original “Constance” music video.

The release follows the May announcement of their upcoming debut album, Eternal Blue, set to drop Sept. 17 via Rise Records. Preorders for the record are available now, and the full tracklist is below.

Fans got a sneak peek of what’s to come on the album through the releases of four singles, “Holy Roller,” “Circle With Me,” “Secret Garden” and “Constance.” All of the tracks showcase Spiritbox’s distinctive approach: introducing exquisite vocals over roaring instrumentals and then surprising listeners by adding more intense vocalizations into the mix.

“Constance – Acoustic” is available on all streaming platforms now. You can watch the visual for the track below.
