Hear Say Anything's "Psyche!," their first post-hiatus single and love letter to the alt-rock scene

Back in 2018, pop-punk favorites Say Anything announced they were going on hiatus and called their 2019 album Oliver Appropriate a send-off to the band.

Well, now they’re officially saying, “Psyche!” to that plan. After announcing a string of live performances earlier this year, including festival appearances at Bamboozle and When We Were Young, the band has dropped their first release since they went on hiatus.

Today, Say Anything has shared “Psyche!,” a riveting, uplifting emo anthem. It’s a fitting return, as frontman Max Bremis opens the song by howling, “We are born again. We’ve died and sprung to life, so wet and fresh.” But beyond that, it also reflects on how far the band’s come and their origins, making references to fellow alt-rock scene artists like blink-182, Chris Carrabba, and Saves the Day.

Bremis shared a statement via a press release about the band’s return and the single. He said, “The music we’re working on now is so meta it’s not. It’s a satire of everything our band was, and the idea of every emo band coming back after five years, going back to basics and grasping for the fanbase they discarded so callously by diving headfirst into their fans’ wants and needs, instead of gorging on major label cash and then still trying to be the next Animal Collective or Strokes despite what their band actually sounds like, to be thwarted every time by indie gatekeepers.” He added that “Psyche!” is “probably the apex of this concept, full of easter eggs, sincere attempts at stadium rock and an incredibly disturbing outro hinting at the real-life situation this new music revolves around.”
