Although masks were reportedly mandatory and temperatures were taken before entry, the event soon earned backlash amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Now, Hold Close have released a statement regarding their decision to take part in the Wreck The Hall 2 event. As well, they have announced an indefinite break.

On Dec. 5, Hold Close, Lo., Flashing Lights and Envious View took part in the Odyssey Lounge’s Wreck The Hall 2 concert. The venue sold a limited amount of tickets and allegedly enforced social distancing during the event.

However, news of the concert soon spread and a lot of people weren’t happy. As the United States continues to set new record highs of coronavirus infections and deaths each day, many people believe having the event during the pandemic was the wrong call.

Photos and videos from the performance allegedly show that the venue did not enforce social distancing. As well, many of those in the audience did not wear protective face masks despite promises that both would be enforced.

Following the backlash, Hold Close released a lengthy statement on Dec. 6. In the statement, they explain why they decided to take part in the event and apologize for their “selfish desire to play a show.”

“First, we would like to apologize as a band for playing a show during a pandemic,” Hold Close say. “With COVID cases continuing to rise, we should have not put our own selfish desire to play a show before the health and safety of others. We will not be participating in any events in the future where others will be at risk. [We] had a mutual desire to assist our local venue in keeping afloat during such a trying time. We allowed that to cloud our judgment and we are incredibly sorry.”

Hold Close go on to say that their goal as a band is to “always create a safe and open space” for their fans. Along with apologizing to their fanbase who have supported them for years, Hold Close say that they are taking a break.

“For those who came to last night’s show, we are sorry for being the ones who put you at risk,” they continue. “We highly encourage you all to get tested, socially distance and if possible, quarantine. We will also be doing the same. As a band, we are going to be stepping back and taking a break for a while. We would like to reflect on our actions and thoughts that led us to play a show during such a serious time. We are committed to righting these actions.”

Since the release of their statement, Hold Close have received mixed reactions. While some believe they shouldn’t have to apologize, others think they should’ve held a livestream concert like so many other artists have done throughout 2020.

Now, this isn’t the first time large gatherings have come together for live music amid the coronavirus pandemic. This summer, Smash Mouth and Trapt were among the artists who performed at the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Photos and videos from the event showed that social distancing and mask-wearing were not enforced. Health officials now say that the motorcycle rally is linked to over 260,000 COVID-19 cases in the Midwestern United States.

Plenty of artists have found other ways to safely bring live music to fans this year. Dance Gavin Dance, Billie Eilish, the Maine, All Time Low, Black Veil Brides and Underoath are just a few of the artists who have held livestreamed concerts in 2020.

Other acts have also utilized drive-ins this year. Over the summer, Andrew McMahon celebrated the Everything In Transit anniversary with various drive-in performances. The Beach Boys and Sublime With Rome are a few of the other musicians to also give this format of live music a try in 2020.

What are your reactions to Hold Close having a concert during the coronavirus pandemic? What do you think about their apology? Let us know in the comments below.

The Faim strip down to a ‘State Of Mind’ for experimental new record https://www.altpress.com/the-faim-state-of-mind-interview/ Wed, 11 Sep 2019 23:55:13 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/the-faim-state-of-mind-interview/ The Faim, french for “the hunger,” are true to their name, as the Perth natives have a craving for growth and finding new ways to express their thoughts and feelings. Their forthcoming album, State Of Mind, contains a diverse yet cohesive tracklisting, each song with its own meaning.

Despite the four-piece having toured with the likes of Andy Black, Sleeping With Sirens and Hands Like Houses, though, things aren’t always smooth sailing. Vocalist Josh Raven credits his ability to stay level-headed on the road to his bandmates—guitarist Sam Tye, bassist/keyboardist Stephen Beerkens and drummer Linden Marissen.

“We’re always faced with uncontrollable events or unimaginable circumstances, [and] sometimes the only thing you can do is really embrace the important people you have around you,” Raven says. “It’s a big journey for everyone. It doesn’t matter what part you have in a band. At the end of the day, everyone is in this 100%, and everyone is experiencing the same things. It’s really important to just be honest and be open with each other about what you’re feeling…The foundation has always got to be stronger than everything else around you, or else it’ll tend to crumble.”

Inspired by groups such as Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy and Metallica, experimentation with sound, along with life experiences, played an active part in the creation of State Of Mind. The Aussies quite literally stripped everything down in the studio to create a piece of art they felt represented them.

“It sounds weird, but I told the boys, ‘Let’s strip off all our clothes and create this strange space of getting out of our comfort zone. Let’s do something different,’” Raven recounts of writing the title track. “It was just more the idea of when you physically put yourself in that sort of space [and] you change your environment, the instincts that you go to when you write [are] more natural and something you won’t expect.”

While everyone has different ways of maintaining their own mental health, Raven says music has always been an outlet for the band to use as a coping mechanism and help release their emotions.

“Despite the gravity of it, we express ourselves in a raw and honest way, whether it’s conscious or subconscious,” he explains. “It’s so important to let people know that their experiences, their events, not only are they OK, but they are also a part of growing and part of the unique facets that make up an individual.”

That message is reflected in the slowest track on the album, “Where The River Runs”. With Raven singing with a lone piano, it’s a stark but welcome difference than what’s expected from usual tunes.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from [or] what you’ve done,” Raven says. “Everyone has their own pain, and it’s not any more or any less than anybody else’s. It’s just important to be aware of that and think about it in the right, responsible way. Especially in today’s day and age, in the rise of social media, the rise of information just being bombarded on people in general, it’s important to keep true the things that are around you and the people that really love you.

“That song was a really big step, personally and for the band,” he continues. “It was just a different approach to everything [and] had its own little identity on the album. It’s quite stripped back and quiet, not too overly produced. We wanted to do that because it doesn’t necessarily need it. The sentiment and the message are what’s important.”

Read more: 11 musicians reminisce about playing their first live gig including the Faim, Palaye Royale and more

In an industry that’s constantly changing, whether personally or overall, the group continue to be their most authentic selves.

“You can’t really change the world around you, but you can change your reaction to it,” he shares. “‘Being true to yourself’ is a strong thing to say because sometimes that’s one of the harder things to do. Emotion can be quite an impulsive and powerful thing, and sometimes emotion isn’t the best thing for every scenario. Sometimes it’s rationality and reason…It’s important to think and take a step back and really look at what you want. Look at what you need out of life and let that guide you.”

From soulful “Beautiful Drama” to ever-relatable “Humans,” the band want to make sure listeners take away something from each track.

“Even if only one person out there in the world can find a perspective in our album, then for us it’s going to be a job well done,” Raven says. “To inspire others to look outside of themselves and find some kind of security and safety in it, it’s really important. It’s a really humble and rewarding feeling.”

State Of Mind drops Friday, and it’s available for preorder here. The Faim are also hitting the road in the U.S. for a co-headliner with Stand Atlantic this fall. Hold Close, WSTR and Point North are on as support, and a full list of dates and tickets can be found here.

4. Speedy Ortiz – “DTMFA”

8. COIN – “Simple Romance”

COIN’s new song “Simple Romance” is a jam to get you moving. The song is the first single off their upcoming 2019 album, so far without a title. To kick off this new era of music, the band have released a new music video to accompany the single.

Forever Came Calling announce comeback with new song, new EP and new tour https://www.altpress.com/forever_came_calling_borrowed_cars_retro_future_premiere/ Tue, 16 Jan 2018 20:51:00 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/forever_came_calling_borrowed_cars_retro_future_premiere/ [Photo by: Chris Clough]

Forever Came Calling are officially back. After releasing their new song, “Kansas City,” last month, the band have announced a new single, a new EP—and a new tour.

“It’s been a while since you’ve heard from us,” lead singer-songwriter, Joseph Candelaria, says. “When creativity/entertainment is how you identify ones self-worth it tends to lead to imbalances or rather inconsistencies. Coupling this with severe anxiety and expectation it’s almost impossible to ever feel like I have fulfilled what I set out to do.

“The collection of songs known as Retro Future is about embracing what you love and making decisions based on your instincts, Saturn’s return: the idea that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, purging antiquated ideas and most importantly believing in yourself. Retro Future is letting go of how you thought things were going to play out so something brighter and better can take its place. And with that here is the first 'official' single, 'Borrowed Cars.'”

Give “Borrowed Cars” a listen here:

Retro Future was recorded at Kingsound Studios, engineered/mixed/co-produced by Rick King and co-produced by Nick Thompson. You can preorder Retro Future here. Plus, you can preorder the EP on vinyl from Smartpunk here.

And check out their forthcoming tour dates with In Her Own Words and Hold Close below. Tickets go on sale 12 p.m. local time this Friday, Jan. 19.
