Life's responsibilities will inevitably cause many a band to “return” by the time they're onto the next thing. Tallahassee, Florida's Look Mexico are doing just that after a five-year buffer period since 2011's Real Americans Spear It. Their impending third studio album, Uniola, is a filling return (with a pinch more maturity) and arriving on June 24. Handled by tight-knit indie Tiny Engines, it neatly brings things full circle for both parties, since the label's first release was Look Mexico's Gasp Asp back in '08.

Hear our exclusive premiere of “Well, Kansas Ain't What It Used To Be.,” where the band riff around with a renewed focus:

They're using the airtime to show off their zany personalities, even turning wretched winter snow into a good time.

Their debut album, Mother, was released earlier this year. Pick up the album directly from Tiny Engines.

Beach Slang – Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street EP https://www.altpress.com/beach_slang_cheap_thrills_on_a_dead_end_street_ep/ Fri, 03 Oct 2014 02:34:00 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/beach_slang_cheap_thrills_on_a_dead_end_street_ep/ Beach Slang

Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street EP

Until the Replacements release that reunion record—or Jawbreaker decide to get back together—fans of shaggy, melodic punk have to be content with Philadelphia's Beach Slang. That's no lame consolation prize, though: The band's second stellar 2014 EP produced by Descendents' Stephen Egerton, Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street, is cut from the same cloth as the earlier Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken? EP. Ragged bar-band riffs, James Snyder's gravel-pit vocals and emoting, and desperate drumming dominate the o.g.-Goo Goo Dolls-sounding “All Fuzzed Out” and the midtempo “Dirty Cigarettes,” while highlight “American Girls And French Kisses” is storming, frenzied punk. Only the EP-closing acoustic number “We Are Nothing” lags a little; otherwise, Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street cranks up anticipation for a Beach Slang full-length.

Dikembe – “Snakes In My Path” song premiere https://www.altpress.com/dikembe_snakes_in_my_path_song_premiere/ Tue, 01 Jul 2014 20:00:00 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/dikembe_snakes_in_my_path_song_premiere/ Photo by Nick Karp

Florida emo-punks Dikembe are teaming up with AP to bring you the premiere of their new song, “Snakes In My Path.” The track is taken from the band’s upcoming sophomore LP, Mediumship, which is due out on July 22 via Tiny Engines. Listen to the song below, and let us know your thoughts.

“'Snakes In My Path’ was the first song we wrote for what would eventually become Mediumship,” says singer Steven Gray. “Musically, I think it’s a nice summary of the tonality of the record, which is overall slower and more dynamic. Lyrically, it’s about the bravest thing I have ever seen. It's probably the song I'm most proud of.”

Pre-orders for Mediumship are on sale now. Starting next month, the band will be on tour with Weatherbox. (You can see the full list of dates below the song.) If you missed it, hear another new song from the album, “Get Harder.”

Frontier(s) – White Lights EP https://www.altpress.com/frontiers_white_lights_ep/ Thu, 08 May 2014 19:25:00 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/frontiers_white_lights_ep/ Frontier(s)

White Lights EP

Frontier(s) came on the scene in 2010, creating some excitement with ex-members of Elliott and Mouthpiece writing pretty solid, Revelation Records-style rock on a single and ensuing full-length. Then, they more or less disappeared. Four years later, they've returned in strong form with the White Lights EP, a rousing comeback that happens to the best thing they've done so far.

Sure, Frontier(s) still by and large sound like a riff-rock extension of Elliott, maybe similar to the route the reunited Sunny Day Real Estate would have gone based on their recent “Lipton Witch” single split with Circa Survive. But as anyone who's paid attention to adept emo veterans playing rock is aware of, that extension often yields pleasurable results (cf. the Jealous Sound, Further Seems Forever, Hey Mercedes), with Chris Higdon's uniquely strained voice giving things strong character.

White Lights essentially operates on two plains: introductory straight-ahead rock (“Higher Hills,” “33/3”), and more flexible, freewheeling affairs (the patient “Our March” and “A Low High,” both of which clock in at nearly six minutes apiece). “A Low High” is a little missequenced, granted; it's Frontier(s)' take on arena rock, with a conclusive-sounding, oft-repeated refrain (“I turn to love/I turned too late/I turn to love/Without fearing”) that's followed by the quicker, snarling closer “Bare Hands,” the angriest song on White Lights. It's a relatively minor flaw on an otherwise rather compelling effort overall, though.
