Head into the weekend with songs from Yves Tumor, Magnolia Park and more.

Yves Tumor reinvents pop music made for graveyards

Whether they’re making splintering noise or projecting classic rock through a new lens, Yves Tumor creates spellbinding music with a sinister edge. Now, they return with their first new music of the year, “God Is a Circle.” The single is a rather ghoulish affair, beginning with a shriek right out of a Wes Craven movie. A relentless panting anchors the song as Tumor describes a relationship that’s consuming too much of them. The result is equal parts supernatural, foreboding and deeply replayable from an artist who’s ever-evolving. —Neville Hardman

Magnolia Park aren’t just another “Radio Reject”

Magnolia Park are back with another raucous anthem, “Radio Reject.” The track brims with energy and sweat, highlighting the band’s bright fusion of pop-punk with alt-rock and trap leanings. Magnolia Park call the song an “anthem for following your dreams and never giving up,” and you can see for yourself by listening below. “Radio Reject” appears on their debut album, Baku’s Revenge, out now. —Neville Hardman

Softcult’s “Drain” is a timely shoegaze directive in the fight against climate change

With their latest single “Drain,” shoegaze/dream-pop duo Softcult offer a timely plea for the world to take climate change seriously while critiquing old-world policies that put profit over people and the planet. Vocalist and guitarist Mercedes Arn-Horn, along with twin sibling and drummer Phoenix Arn-Horn, trade off hypnotizing melodies and harmonies set to a backdrop of fuzzed-out guitars and ambient reverb. The track is just another example of Softcult’s lyrical bravery in the face of injustice and will appear on their upcoming EP, see you in the dark, out this spring. —Alessandro DeCaro

Victoria Anthony’s “Should’ve Known” is a pop-punk breakup anthem

With her latest single “Should’ve Known,” Victoria Anthony gives listeners an inside look into a troubling breakup while turning her pain into an unapologetic pop-punk anthem. Set against a backdrop of driving drums, 808s and catchy guitar riffs, Anthony sums up her feelings of resentment toward her ex-partner with confidence and vulnerability. While she’s open about the pain that she experienced in a way that most can relate to, the song takes on another life as well. It positions Anthony in a place where she can have the upper hand and come out of the situation stronger than ever. —Alessandro DeCaro

Light up with YUNGMORPHEUS’ “Figure-Four Leg Lock”

YUNGMORPHEUS doesn’t need to shout to grab your attention. Rather, the Los Angeles MC employs a gentler touch through cool-headed, stream-of-consciousness rapping and buoyant, jazzy production. With “Figure-Four Leg Lock,” YUNGMORPHEUS’ verses unfurl like ribbons of chronic smoke. Through it all, he commands the track with an ease that makes his grave observations (“Pigs probably clap a brother just for a promotion”) all the more compelling. —Neville Hardman

The HIRS Collective and Shirley Manson (Garbage) create stellar powerviolence with “We’re Still Here”

On the HIRS Collective’s latest single “We’re Still Here,” they’ve enlisted beloved ’90s alternative-rock vocalist Shirley Manson (Garbage) to create yet another anthem that embodies their mission to make the world a safer and more just place for trans and queer individuals. With pummeling blast beats, motivational lyrics, melodic vocals from Manson and earth-shattering breakdowns, the powerviolence-meets-grindcore band are unmatched in terms of energy and aggression. The single follows the announcement of the collective’s upcoming LP, We’re Still Here, arriving March 24, which features a host of high-profile guest vocalists such as Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance), Geoff Rickly (Thursday) and Damon Abraham (Fucked Up), among many others. —Alessandro DeCaro

Ryan Oakes and Loveless’ “HEAVYWEIGHT” is a confident blast of rock

Rapper-singer Ryan Oakes is continuing his foray into rock ‘n’ roll-inspired music once again with his latest single, “HEAVYWEIGHT.” The track channels the familiarity of early 2000s rap-rock and pushes it further into the future with a massive chorus courtesy of LA duo Loveless, who supply anthemic vocals, heavy guitars and intense rhythmic energy. Oakes wastes no time spitting rapid-fire lyrics that document his rise to fame while taking shots at those who doubted him along the way with a healthy dose of braggadocio. —Alessandro DeCaro

Meg Myers conjures a rallying cry with “SOPHIA <144>”

Meg Myers is calling for unity with her new single “SOPHIA <144>” featuring Nicole Perretti. At just over a minute long, its accompanying visual is a concise rallying cry that acts as a “call of remembrance,” Myers says. The video is interpolated with news footage of Iranian women demanding for change after recent killings of those who refused to wear a hijab. Listen to the full track here. —Neville Hardman

Fleshwater’s “Closet” is ’90s post-hardcore at its finest

On “Closet,” the second track from Fleshwater’s debut LP, We’re Not Here to Be Loved, the Massachusetts-based post-hardcore/shoegaze collective have captured the spirit of the ‘90s in haunting ways. “Closet” feels like a hybrid between ‘90s space-rock pioneers Hum and the melodic and rhythmic sensibilities of Deftones. Fleshwater, who are composed primarily of members of hardcore act Vein.fm — along with singer-songwriter Mirsy, blend delicate vocals with harsh screams and frantic time signatures to create an unsettlingly beautiful score. —Alessandro DeCaro

For Eyedress, speaking out about mental health is an artist’s greatest responsibility https://www.altpress.com/eyedress-interview-issue-401/ Tue, 18 Jan 2022 22:00:35 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/eyedress-interview-issue-401/ From the start of his career, Eyedress has pushed himself. “When I moved to L.A., that was [a] difficult thing,” he remembers. “I was living on my own. I didn’t have my family anymore, but that was a good thing because I got to see what kind of person I really am on my own. That self-discovery really shaped me today.”

Some of his inspiration comes from his son, who likes anything to do with skateboarding, 3D animation and TikTok. “He’s made me want to do more animated videos because he literally watches TikTok with me, cheek to cheek,” he says.

No matter what he does, Eyedress puts his all into everything he touches. Behind all of his work is the motivation to speak up for the things he believes in, especially mental health. “If you’re not going to riot on the streets and protest,” he says, “at least speak about the right things just so that you know there’s actually knowledge in what you’re doing.”

You said that Mulholland Drive is “about loving yourself and your life.” How did you learn to do those things?

It sounds pretty cheesy, but growing up, I struggled with not loving myself, and going to school made me feel dumb. Loving myself happened the more good things happened in my life. Back in the day, I would be really unhealthy and toxic, but now that things have gotten better, it humbled me. I feel comfortable with myself now. Growing up, I’d be really insecure, and [there were] so many things that I didn’t know how to deal with.

Now that I’m older, I can assess everything in life, and I feel like my mind is healthy and not self-deprecating. [I’m not] putting myself down anymore. That came in time. Music wasn’t really going for me early on in my life, so the more it caught on and the more things got better for me, the more I was able to really appreciate myself because I felt like I was doing something right.

Do you have any tips for those who may be struggling to do the same?

Confronting the harsh truths. I would put off a lot of things in my life, and I think that accumulated over time and made things worse. [Go] into the pain rather than putting it off and putting a blanket over it — that’s not going to heal the wounds. The most transforming thing is when you actually confront it, and you put yourself in that uncomfortable position.

You collaborated with YUNGMORPHEUS to produce Affable With Pointed Teeth. What did you learn from that experience as a producer, and did you pick up anything that you’re going to incorporate into future releases?

That’s just always been a pastime for me, producing for other artists. With hip-hop, that kind of stuff just came naturally because when I was a teenager, that’s when I discovered sampling. I was more of a band dude. I played instruments and stuff. When I discovered sampling, I had this new thing to do besides writing songs on guitar. [Affable With Pointed Teeth] is me showing what else I could do besides making rock music. I like a lot of stuff. I could venture off into the electronic music world, or I can go into this little sampling stuff and go to indie-rock stuff. I like showing that diversity. I feel like that’s what makes me, me. Some artists just stick to one thing, but I’ve always been like, “I’m an artist, no matter what I’m doing, whether I’m making videos or taking pictures.”

You’ve openly talked about self-image and mental health in the past during interviews and on social media. Why do you think it’s important to be transparent about these topics?

When I was younger, I used to drink a lot and do stupid stuff. Mental health is important because some people need to check themselves. If they can fix things before it gets too crazy, they should do it. People should be aware that your mind is a powerful thing. I have a friend who killed himself, so I feel like your mental health should be highlighted in your face. I think people in my generation are very conscious of being in tune with everything because we live in a crazy world.

I’m really sorry to hear about your friend.

Yeah, that definitely made me want to check up on my friends all the time — make sure they’re not going into a dark place and help them believe in themselves and know that they’re worthy of love. It sounds corny to be the friend who’s like, “Oh, let’s just be positive.” But sometimes it takes a lot of strength to be that person, too. I think people should always know it’s good to talk about this because you might save someone.

What do you think your greatest responsibility as a musician is?

Speaking out on mental health is definitely one of them. I have a kid, and I’m representing other parents, too. So you gotta do what’s right. Making sure you’re creating a safe environment [is another responsibility]. [I want to] push it a bit. I like seeing kids going crazy at the mosh pit, but we don’t want them to die or anything, especially after the Astroworld [Festival] stuff. I want to have fun shows that everyone can go [to]. I think now, especially after Astroworld, you definitely want to have a safe [space], especially if you’re going to have younger kids [there]. Their mom shouldn’t have to worry.

What was your greatest accomplishment last year?

Getting through [the day]. That is my biggest accomplishment nowadays. The biggest accomplishment is to keep doing this consistently because you could fall off at any moment. My accomplishment is being healthy, and that’s it, really. Just taking care of everything, being present. That’s the best thing that you could thank yourself for. I’m still alive today, and hopefully, [I could] save a life or two by saying something nice to someone.

WARGASM

Check out: “Salma Hayek”

“Salma Hayek,” an ode to Quentin Tarantino’s classic 1996 film From Dusk Till Dawn, immediately starts off strong. Listeners are met with aggressive guitar riffs to match the screaming vocals from Sam Matlock. Milkie Way adds a riot grrrl-esque sound to the track that is incredibly enticing, paired with electronic beats. The song, which “comes in with all the subtlety of a pack of wild dogs,” according to the band, feels like the euphoric release of built-up frustration. Lyrics such as “All these boys are crying/Saying I’m their new messiah” are perfect for anyone to scream-sing at the top of their lungs to blow off a little steam.

U.S. Velvet

Check out: “Sleep Paralysis”

U.S. Velvet make listeners feel as if they are sinking down into their bed, unable to rise, with their appropriately titled “Sleep Paralysis.” Groggy vocals and driving guitar riffs create a darkness that’s lightened by vibrant synths. The eeriness of the vocals and the brightness of the synths coalesce to create a well-balanced song — the ideal soundtrack for a fall day with a steaming cup of black coffee.

YUNGMORPHEUS

Check out: “Candyman”

“Candyman” was the first hint at what was to come — the track was one of the first singles released from YUNGMORPHEUS’ new album, Affable With Pointed Teeth, produced entirely by Eyedress. YUNGMORPHEUS infuses the track with jazz influences to create a murky atmosphere for his lyrics to shine through. One of the most notable is when he asks why we hide our scars. “Don’t you know the tough bleed?” he quips.

Dora Jar

Check out: “Scab Song”

Dora Jar creates musical magic with “Scab Song.” Yes, the song may be inspired by a scab on her leg that resembled the shape of Hawaii, but don’t let that fool you. “Scab Song” is a mesmerizing combination of fairy-like harmonies mixed with whirling, almost extraterrestrial, electronic sounds. A delightful acoustic guitar riff invites listeners in and crescendos until becoming almost defiant, yet somehow still not aggressive. The lyrics also offer a journey, from talking about her island-shaped scab to laying out her thoughts from the deepest corners of her brain. Take a trip through Jar’s amusing mind and allow yourself to blissfully float away.

Goodnight

Check out: “Tangent”

Goodnight’s “Tangent” takes inspiration from many corners of the music world, employing electronic, new-wave, shoegaze and pop sounds. The inspiration behind this song, and their new Tangent EP, was to create music that could be used for film scores, and they certainly succeeded. The track is driven by a strong electronic beat that gives way to bursts of energy that build over time. Melodic, tranquil vocals behind what sounds like a voicemail message come as a welcome surprise about halfway through the track. The duo then take control toward the end, adding more depth and emotion to the song.

In an interview with Quarantine Content, YUNGMORPHEUS discussed wanting the listener taking away honesty from States Of Precarity

“I think that’s the main thing, you know?”, YUNGMORPHEUS says. “Be honest with yourself, be honest with myself. That’s the whole point of that. That was me finally being honest with myself with the platform that I have.”

Affable With Pointed Teeth includes four singles: “Four Week Cure,” which was released alongside “Candyman,” “Georgette’s Tea Room” featuring rapper Pink Siifu and the latest single “Rainbow Coalition.”

The L.A.-based rapper has previously dropped a music video to accompany the single “Georgette’s Tea Room.”

The video, presented in a retro look, captures YUNGMORPHEUS and Pink Siifu’s everyday smoke sessions as well as their exploration of the city around them.

The final single from the collaborative project “Rainbow Coalition” dropped in early September along with a visual.

In that visual, “Rainbow Coalition” takes a noir-esque animated approach of a police chase in the dark and progresses through frames of oil paintings.

To celebrate the album release, YUNGMORPHEUS performed a show at Catch One in Los Angeles with artists Fly Anakin, Ahwlee and Zeroh, as well as additional special musical guests.

Affable With Pointed Teeth is out now via Lex Records. Listen to YUNGMORPHEUS and Eyedress’ new album below, and share your thoughts in the comments.

The feverishly paced video cuts through a stormy city, shrouded in night. The visual features frenzied shots of Eyedress, his partner Elvia and his crew moshing their way through the Gotham-esque city, on the hunt. The singer even dons a maroon suit, old-school walking stick and gold grill.

“Spit On Your Grave” is the darker side of a two-song single. Where “Spit On Your Grave” is grim and antagonistic, “Something About You” featuring Dent May is dreamy and lighthearted.

“Something About You” features two couples on a romantic vacation that Wes Anderson would approve of. The sweet love song makes you want to sway along to its groovy guitar riffs while watching the playful video directed by Bobby Astro.

More on Eyedress

Eyedress’ most popular song to date is the TikTok hit “Jealous.” The track is featured in over 96,000videos on the platform.

Eyedress shared his thoughts on “Jealous” with Alternative Press

“The one I’m most known for right now is the song ‘Jealous,’ and I think that whole song and the video reflects who I am lately,” Eyedress says. “I’m a skater, so you see in the video I skate, and I’m wearing a Death Row sweater. I grew up in the hood. Just like a mixture of skate culture and punk rock. I think that song lyrically represents me. It was only a couple of years ago, but I was a little immature. I still feel pretty youthful even though I’m 30 already. I just try to keep that spirit of being creative alive, and I’m never really trying to lose sight of that side of me. Music’s always been something I did for fun. It’s crazy that it’s become something I can make a living off of. I’m just grateful. Music for me is just a therapeutic thing [where] I get to vent and get things off my chest.”

Eyedress is also involved in a few side projects. He’s producing an album with YUNGMORPHEUS and playing in a band called the Simps. He also makes music with his partner, Elvia. You can watch the music video for the song they made for their son together, “Cotton Candy Skies,” below.

When he isn’t working on his music, he’s working on his clothing brand, Paranoia. The name behind the brand comes from a personal place.

“I dealt with a lot of mental health issues growing up,” Eyedress explains, “but I’ve somehow managed to turn it into a brand.”

Eyedress releases two-song single and music video featuring Dent May—watch https://www.altpress.com/news-eyedress-featuring-dent-may/ Fri, 04 Jun 2021 04:05:37 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/news-eyedress-featuring-dent-may/ Eyedress has released a new two-song single that showcases both ends of Eyedress’ sonic capabilities. The single includes “Something About You,” featuring Los Angeles-based musician Dent May and “Spit On Your Grave.”

The juxtaposition between these tracks is striking. On the one hand, we have a lighthearted love song filled with groovy guitar riffs in “Something About You.” On the other hand, “Spit On Your Grave” is a high-tempo punk song sure to make you move.

The dreamy “Something About You” comes with an equally atmospheric music video that features couples spending vacations together while living in a romantic Wes Anderson-esque world. The playful lyrics are matched with brief moments of humor that catch viewers pleasantly off guard, forcing them to giggle as they sway along to the rhythm. The romantic video was directed by Bobby Astro

“Most of the time my approach is lo-fi, so I have a lot of VHS videos,” Eyedress says about his visual style in an interview with Alternative Press. “There’s something about nostalgia that really draws my aesthetic. I’m really into old films even, and I feel like movies directed by Stanley Kubrick would resonate with the kinds of sounds I’m trying to make. Take The Shining, a really beautiful horror film, but it was shot in a really surreal, beautiful hotel up on the mountains. I try to make my music dreamy and surreal.”

You can watch the music video below.

“I’m an all-around artist,” says Eyedress. I don’t necessarily make one genre of music, but I guess most of my popular songs are on the indie-rock, post-punk side of things. But I also do SoundCloud rap stuff and produce hip-hop music for my friends. I’m not just a singer-songwriter. Sometimes I know when to step back and just make the music. I’m like a DIY artist. Most of my videos, if I’m not directing, I’m really involved. I also add my two cents into everything, even with merch and clothes I design.”

He released Let’s Skip to The Wedding in 2020 under Lex Records. The album is “for everyone who wants to be in a serious relationship … real simp[le] shit,” says Eyedress.

Eyedress divulged to AltPress about what’s next for him.

“I’m just working on my brand right now,” Eyedress says.  “I’m dropping a new collection. My brand’s called Paranoia. I dealt with a lot of mental health issues growing up, but I’ve somehow managed to turn it into a brand. I have a lot of side projects coming out. I have an album with my friend YUNGMORPHEUS, which will be coming out this year. It’s more like lo-fi hip-hop beats. My friend MORPHEUS does all the rapping. I’m just a producer. My band the Simps are dropping an album this year as well. It’s like an indie, synth-pop-type band.

“I got another Eyedress record on the way full of all types of different songs,” he continued.  “I’m all over the place.I make music with my girlfriend Elvia, but we just release it as Elvia. We recently released a new video. It’s a song about our son called “‘Cotton Candy Skies.’”

10 new alternative songs you need to listen to immediately https://www.altpress.com/new-alternative-songs-may-2021/ Mon, 10 May 2021 15:55:18 +0000 With the start of a new week, it’s easy to fall back on old favorites. Of course, familiar artists have a way of getting you through the grind, of giving you a bedrock that can help you through the day. Nothing beats a classic, and we’re no stranger to blasting that one perfect song on repeat just to give us the energy we really need.

Even so, it’s sometimes important to have a fresh start. Nothing is worse than the same old same old, whether you’re stuck on a Zoom call or counting down the seconds to Friday afternoon. So, let’s not forget about all the fresh talent constantly popping up around the world. Music is always evolving. Occasionally, something new can be the perfect boost.

With that in mind, we pulled together 10 of our favorite new songs. These tracks range in genre, from low key hip-hop beats and easy vibing pop punk to snark-ridden metalcore and snot-drenched punk. What they have in common is they’ll all help get your mood right as you start the new week.

duendita – “bio”

;

For fans of: OSHUN, Ricky Reed, Kari Faux

Accompanied by a lone piano, duendita opens her latest single with dynamic vocalizations before being joined by moving rhythms. The singer says the track looks at the human experience and everything that comes with it, whether we agree to it or not. “‘bio’ is an existential dance song reflecting on a distaste for involuntary experiences as a human exploring themes of reality, creation and surveillance,” she says. “’I didn’t ask to be born,’ yet you still have to find [and] cultivate joy in order to survive.” The single follows “Open Eyes” as the second track of 2021.

Eternal Boy – “Bad Days Are Over”

For fans of: Driveways, Sincerely, Me, Youth Fountain

As the title track and opener for their latest LP, Eternal Boy share an optimistic attitude with “Bad Days Are Over.” Using pop-punk riffs and upbeat rhythms, the trio look to the future while also reminiscing on pre-COVID times. The wholesome music video features heartwarming shots of the band spending the day at Biggies Bullies, a dog shelter focused on finding Pit Bull-type dogs a home. Produced by Chris Badami (The Starting Line, the Early November) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Green Day, Taking Back Sunday), Bad Days Are Over is out now via Four Chord Music

Isabella Lovestory – “Kitten Heel” remix (feat. Hook, Ebhoni)

For fans of: LYZZA, Goldie Boutilier, Shygirl

Isabella Lovestory shared another version of her Mariposa track with the remix of “Kitten Heel.” Alongside vocalists Hook and Ebhoni, the Honduran singer delivers an electric new version of the reggaeton track. Dark synths accent each beat as the singers deliver their respective verses with attitude. “Kitten Heel” is featured alongside the Club Eat rendition of the song as well as other remixes on her latest release, Remix Mixtape

Jeris Johnson – “One Night”

For fans of: Zero 9:36, New Medicine, Fame On Fire

Jeris Johnson unleashes a party with bouncing beats on his latest single, “One Night.” The TikTok star melds pop rhythms with rock guitar stylings, creating a heavy trap beat that’s enhanced by his gritty vocals. Johnson previously collaborated with Papa Roach for “Last Resort (Reloaded)” for his latest EP, my sword, and recently released a remix of Bring Me The Horizon’s “Can You Feel My Heart.”

PLEXXAGLASS – “LILITH”

For fans of: Halsey, SPIDER, Entropy Zero

Alt-pop singer PLEXXAGLASS (Alexxa Joan Rae) aims to take back the power of their identity with “LILITH.” Produced by Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, the track features massive crescendos, with Rae’s vocals soaring above each beat. “’LILITH’ is a reclaiming of bodily autonomy for all humans with or without reproductive organs,” they say. “It’s a rallying of folks within the entire sexuality and gender spectrum to denounce those who try to keep us from thriving.” The single is their first of 2021 and follows a collaboration with Entropy Zero and Soul Extract for “No Time To Die.”

Sloth Fist – “Mothman Is Real”

For fans of: Teenage Bottlerocket, Rotting Out, Knocked Loose

Sloth Fist conjure the melodic intensity of Descendents in the title track for their debut LP, Mothman Is Real. Relentless drums power through each verse, slowing only for a resounding break of fiery riffs and screams. The album is available via Mindpower Records and also features previous releases “All I Know” and “Nicotine.”

Sunset Lines – “Season Of The Witch”

For fans of: Blondie, Jangle, Just A Band

Sunset Lines share a resonating piano ballad with “Season Of The Witch.” Inspired by horror movies, specifically focused on the “final girl” trope, the track explores toxic dynamics through soft lyrics and harmonies. [It] got me thinking about how akin this storyline is to that of a controlling or abusive relationship—drawing upon my own experiences and those so many have gone through—a haunting experience of its own,” lead singer Liz Brooks says. “This song resonates with me in a deeply personal way based on those experiences.” The track follows their previous single “Unresponsive” and is featured on the band’s latest EP, Home Anywhere.

The Undertaking! – “The Problem With Being Included In The Apocalypse”

For fans of: Every Time I Die, the Dillinger Escape Plan, The Chariot

Opening their debut LP, the Undertaking!’s “The Problem With Being Included In The Apocalypse” invites listeners in with slamming drums and sonorous screams. Mosh-worthy breakdowns paired with gang vocals lay the foundation for powerful progressions, leading the track with intricate rhythms and tempo changes. Produced by the Used guitarist Joey Bradford, Funeral Psalms is the group’s debut album and follows their 2019 EP, Scavengers

Visioner – “Psyche”

Visioner reflect on previous experiences with drug misuse in their latest single. With intricate guitar progressions and haunting choruses, “Psyche” takes listeners through the thoughts of someone who’s lost and is suffering in their own turmoil. Singer Robbie Wilson says the lyrics for the track were based on his dark times. “Realizing that all of it was just in my head, I pulled myself out of what was a horrible experience but came out strong-willed and knowing not to put myself in that place ever again,” he says. “I really just wanted to share my experience and [want to] try to help anyone who has struggled with or is struggling with drug abuse and the horrible state of mind that it can sink you into, knowing that you are not alone and you can come out of it stronger.” “Psyche” is the band’s first release since their 2019 EP, Lucid Entity
