Did YUNGBLUD make a nod to My Chemical Romance in his new music video?

On Thursday, YUNGBLUD made his directorial debut with the music video for “god save me, but don’t drown me out.” Now, fans are pointing out an apparent nod to My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way in the singer’s aesthetic.

The connection comes primarily through YUNGBLUD’s outfits, which seem to mirror those worn by Way. One getup features a red-accented suit and matching tie reminiscent of a 2005 photoshoot during the Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge era. A behind the scenes photo posted to Instagram by stylist Caterina Ospina Buitrago shows YUNGBLUD wielding a baseball bat just like Way did in the shoot.

Further similarities can be seen in YUNGBLUD’s white suit and red hair combo, which echoes Way’s Danger Days era style.

This wouldn’t be the first time that YUNGBLUD expressed his appreciation for My Chemical Romance. In a 2019 BBC Radio 1 challenge, the singer was asked to match his lyrics for “hope for the underrated youth” to an instrumental version of “Welcome To The Black Parade.”

“If this goes wrong it’s sacrilegious,” he stated in acknowledging his nervousness over the challenge.

In a 2019 interview with Alternative Press, the singer went on to list Way and My Chemical Romance as an influence on his own music.

“I find it amazing when people compare me to [My Chemical Romance] because Gerard Way was a massive influence on me,” He explains, “He implemented himself in my brain and made me feel like it’s—pardon the pun—OK to not be OK. My Chem’s approach to music is a very integral part of what I’m doing.”

The “god save me, but don’t drown me out” video comes on the heels of YUNGBLUD’s sophomore album announcement. Weird! is due for release Nov. 13 via Locomotion/Interscope Records. Preorders will instantly receive digital downloads of “god save me, but don’t drown me out,” “Weird!” and “Strawberry Lipstick.”

YUNGBLUD has also announced a full-scale-production digital tour set to kick off following the release of Weird!. Presented by Moment House, the Weird Time Of Life tour begins Nov. 16 in London. The run features dates in 16 cities, though YUNGBLUD notes that access to the event is not limited by location.

“The thing I miss about playin’ shows is the individuality of every night,” YUNGBLUD says, “The different faces, the different energy, but most of all the different cultures. Our community may be from different parts of the world yet we have similar beliefs, it is incredible. I wanted to do a show for as many cities as I could, playing songs off my new album for the first time. This album helped me so much, and I wanted to bring it to the fans with all the energy, all the passion, all the love and all the fucking rage that went into it. Just because we can’t touch each other, doesn’t mean we can’t feel each other. I’ll see you in your city.”

Tickets to the tour are limited and run for $5, so be sure to get them when they go on sale Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. PDT. Fans who preorder Weird! by Oct. 1 at 1:30 a.m. PDT will receive access to a presale at 5 a.m. PDT the same day.
