Electric Century

Electric Century are returning with a new album and graphic novel

Electric Century is set to have a new graphic novel as well as a corresponding album to go along with it. The new graphic novel is titled Electric Century and is due out this fall through Z2 Comics. The record will be the first for Electric Century since 2017’s For The Night To Control.

Electric Century formed in 2014 after the breakup of My Chemical Romance and consists of MCR bassist Mikey Way and Sleep Station’s David Debiak.

The upcoming graphic novel is a collaboration between Way and Shaun Simon who worked together in the past for DC’s Young AnimalCollapser. Simon also penned The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys with Gerard Way. The art comes from Toby Cypress.

“The story centers on former sitcom star Johnny Ashford who is arrested after driving drunk,” the description says. “Ashford’s aspiring actress girlfriend bails him out and he begins seeing a hypnotherapist. Dr. Evers sends Johnny to his “happy place” — 1980’s Atlantic City. Where, he relives his childhood on the boardwalk, hardly noticing shadowy specters all around.”

“Johnny’s addiction shifts from alcohol to his hypnotic trips to the boardwalk and the Electric Century casino, which satisfies his desire for fame. He discovers a way to stay there. In the real world, his girlfriend’s search for him leads her to Dr. Evers, who offers her a free session, and Johnny meets her on a beach by the boardwalk—her own ‘happy place.’ Johnny brings her to his boardwalk, only to discover its true nature. Johnny must find a way to save himself and his girlfriend, and escape the Electric Century.”

Mikey Way elaborated on why the project means so much to him.

“I’m delighted to announce this book!” Mikey Way says. “The genesis of the story has been many years in the making, created with some of my closest friends. Getting to bring the two things I am most passionate about together — comics & music — has been exciting, challenging and unbelievably rewarding. I’ve been waiting to tell this type of story about my home state for a long time. I truly hope everyone enjoys it.”

“After I read Young Animal’s Collapser series last year, I was blown away.” Z2’s Josh Frankel said. “When the opportunity came about to collaborate with Shaun and Mikey on something for Z2, it was a no brainer. Little did I know that it would not only lead to one of our best books so far, but what is sure to be one of the best comics of the year. Period.”

“I couldn’t be happier working with Mikey again and especially at Z2, a publisher with a firm base in the world of music and culture centric books, that values quality over quantity,” Simon said. “Toby Cypress has become one of my favorite artists over the past few years. It’s an incredible honor to work with such a talent and watch him bring this world to life with us.”

Electric Century is available for preorder here. The graphic novel and accompanying full-length record will be hitting comic shops, retailers and record stores this September!

Electric Century returns! Super excited about this new EC project. It’s an album and a full graphic novel. My dear brother @mikeyway and his band mate Dave Debiak made an album with our own @raytoro producing, then Mikey and our longtime friend and sometimes co-writer Shaun Simon wrote the comic, and then one of my favorite artists Toby Cypress @punkrockjazz illustrated it! And the whole thing is gorgeous and wild. So proud of the whole team— they made something unique and great. It’s published by @z2comics, and Mikey tells me it’s been a great experience with them. Check it out when it launches if you’re into cool weird comics and awesome music. Love you Mikey! #ec #electriccentury #comics #graphicnovels #music #z2comics
