Anthrax former singer charged for allegedly assaulting elderly man

Former Anthrax singer Dan Nelson has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 74-year-old man at an airport in New York last month.

According to the New York Post, the 43-year-old musician beat the elderly man at the Aloft New York LaGuardia Airport hotel at about 11 p.m. on August 30.

The victim, who stands about 5’3” tall and has a heart condition, apparently asked Nelson a question at the hotel, a family member of the victim said to the Patch. After the victim began speaking, Nelson retaliated.

“He just goes bananas,” the anonymous source said. “He knocked the old guy down.”

Nelson turned himself in on Wednesday at 8 a.m. He is charged with felony assault and assault with intent to cause physical injury and harassment.

Nelson was with Anthrax from 2007 to 2009 and has songwriting credits on Worship Music.

Following his departure, he sued the band for $2.65 million, claiming he was owed profits from Worship Music and saying Anthrax defamed for leaving the group. In 2012, that case was settled, and the details of the agreement were not made public.

However, before reaching the deal, Anthrax’s attorney Brian Caplan told the judge that Nelson was offered a “fairly small dollar amount”. Also, he was allegedly offered co-authorship on about 11 songs on Worship Music. It’s unclear if this was the offer he accepted.

Joey Belladonna, who had departed from Anthrax prior to Nelson joining, returned to the group following Nelson’s departure and has been the singer since then.

Nelson has pursued a music career since leaving Anthrax, dropping a debut demo with his 2-piece band called The September Demos in 2016. In 2018, he launched a project called Wolfpack Black with bassis Pat Foote of Steel Reign and Dan Mintzer of Pull and Breakage Rising.
