It looks like Elon Musk is branching out into the film industry. The Tesla CEO is teaming up with Tom Cruise for a new space movie. If successful, it will be the first movie ever filmed in space.

The duo is enlisting the help of NASA to achieve this project.

The untitled movie was originally announced back in May. So far, we know that Cruise and Musk are joining forces with NASA and Musk’s aerospace manufacturer SpaceX for the film.

NASA’s Jim Bridenstine took to social media following the film’s announcement to further confirm the news.

“NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station,” he tweets. “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”

Now, a few more details regarding the project have been revealed. According to Deadline, Universal Pictures agreed to the project after an “exuberant Zoom call” with Cruise, Director Doug Liman, Christopher McQuarrie and PJ van Sandwijk.

Liman is still writing the film’s script. Due to this, the project was pitched to Universal without one. In the end, the film’s team walked away with a massive production commitment of around $200 million. This amount is still an estimate considering that the project is still being scripted. As well, various other logistics regarding filming in space still need to be considered.

Musk is reportedly a partner in the project and is providing his aerospace manufacturer SpaceX. McQuarrie is the film’s story advisor and producer alongside Cruise, Liman and van Sandwijk. McQuarrie has previously worked with Cruise on the Mission: Impossible films.

Pre-production for the untitled project has not started. Due to this, a release date for the film is unknown.

In the meantime, Musk is hard at work developing a music streaming brain chip that could replace headphones. As well, he is enjoying his time as the father of X Æ A-Xii, his son with singer Grimes.
