Patrick Stump says new 'Spell' score is his "real solo record"

Fall Out Boy singer/guitarist Patrick Stump is back with an effort he’s calling his first “real solo record.” But it’s not a followup to his 2011 solo funk outing Soul Punk, it’s the musician’s sprawling film score for new thriller Spell.

And Stump sounds serious when including the new movie score among his bona fide works. He hints to Billboard that scoring has become more than just a passing fancy, the musician extolling the creative freedom in making big-screen sound.

“as a composer, I’m like, ‘Oh, this is my solo record.’ This my real solo record, writing music for films, TV, and stuff. I get to experiment with everything.”

Spell premieres Sunday, Sept. 23, at the LA Film Festival. The psych-thriller’s trailer also features a clip of a new Weezer song, “California Snow.” (The Weezer tune hits streaming outlets tomorrow, Sept. 20.) Watch the Spell trailer below:

But don’t worry, Stump’s not throwing the baby out with the Fall Out Boy. He also talks his main act’s future, the FOB singer recalling the group’s earnest amazement at the warm fan welcome they received upon their 2013 return.

“None of us had any idea when we did Save Rock And Roll that it would even take as strongly as it did. We did it because we wanted to and it was fun. But there were no business expectations. There was no one going, ‘So when’s the new Fall Out Boy record?'”

For now, however, the Fall Out Boy vocalist seems content with his scoring side-gig. The project only fell into his lap after FOB’s longtime management company launched a cinema arm that undertook the Brendan Walter-directed feature.

“I’ve been shouting from the rooftops that I wanted to score! The band’s been around 17 years; I think for 15 of those I’ve been, “Hey, I’d love to score! Just so you know, I like composing!” When they started the film, it still hadn’t gotten back, even internally, that I was doing this. I kind of fell into it.”
