Produced by Paramore‘s Taylor York, “Dead Horse” looks back on who Williams used to be and all of the mistakes she has made along the way.

“‘Dead Horse,’ offers strength back to a younger, weaker version of myself. All of this needed to be said in order to embody the kind of woman I hope to be,” she shares.

In particular, the single’s opening lyrics paint a clear picture of the mind frame Williams was in while writing it.

“Alright it took me three days to send you this, but sorry I was in a depression,” she says. “But I’m trying to come out of it now.”

The single also refers to some well-known moments in Williams’ life including her iconic self-titled era blue hair. Check out the lyric video for the new single below.

The release of “Dead Horse” also marks the end of a pivotal part of Petals For Armor for Williams.

PFA ll is the perfect interlude between where Petals began and where it’s going…Part lll isn’t far behind,” she shares.

Alongside “Dead Horse,” “Why We Ever,” “My Friend,” “Over Yet” and “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris” (featuring boygenius) are the other previously released songs included on Petals For Armor II. For Williams, this particular collection of songs helped her cathartically get through some emotional moments in her life.

“I needed these songs to help me get to a place where I could name my shame, take inventory of emotional scars, true friends, awful coping mechanisms, and discover what I desire for my life,” she says.
