It’s no secret that Riverdale makes plenty of nods to past TV shows and movies. For starters, the show had a whole Carrie musical last season. They’ve also made subtle references to Twin Peaks, Pulp Fiction, Grease and many more.
Now, it looks like the series will be taking on the iconic ‘80s film The Breakfast Club if their new poster is any indication. Molly Ringwald, who plays Archie’s mother Mary Andrews, actually appeared in The Breakfast Club as Claire, so the mashup is basically perfect.
Tonight’s episode of Riverdale is the long-awaited flashback episode where all of our favorites will be taking on the role of their parents in high school in the ‘90s.
Titled, “The Midnight Club,” the episode was first teased this summer as the cast and crew teased it during the CW’s Television Critics Association panel.
We’ll learn a little more about what Riverdale’s parents were like when they were younger. Obviously, we’ll also find out some dark secrets they’ve been hiding.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the show’s creator, explained the idea came from talks about telling viewers about the character’s backstories.
“Throughout the years, we’ve talked a little bit about backstory and we’ve been revealing backstory slowly,” Aguirre-Sacasa told the panel.
The best part, however, is that the main characters will be playing younger versions of their TV parents. So, we’ll get to see Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse as younger versions of Alice Cooper and F.P. Jones, while Camila Mendes and KJ Apa are set to portray Hermione Lodge and Fred Andrews. Plus, Madeleine Petsch and Ashleigh Murray will also play young versions of Penelope Blossom and Sierra McCoy.
Last month, Entertainment Weekly shared the exclusive first look at the young cast portraying their parents in full ‘90s attire.

Aguirre-Sacasa told EW the basic premise of what is to come in the forthcoming episode.
“One of the things that the kids discover pretty early on is that the murder victims in the present were playing a game called Gryphons & Gargoyles, which is, of course, the Rivderdale version of Dungeons & Dragons,” Aguirre-Sacasa says. “And what our kids in the present discover, is that their parents, when they were in high school, were also playing this game and there was a similar murder that happened in the past.”
Aguirre-Sacasa also told the Los Angeles Times, that fans are about “to learn about a really, really dark secret in Riverdale that the parents have been keeping since they were in high school.”
Now, Riverdale is sharing an official poster for the episode, which you can see below.

If we don’t see a library dance sequence or a Bender-inspired fist pump, then we’re going to be super disappointed—just saying.
