The Conjuring‘s third instalment in the series, officially titled The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is arriving this fall barring any delays related to production issues from coronavirus and they’re revealing it will offer something new to horror fans.
According to screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the new film is “completely different” from the first two and is “expanding beyond” the typical haunted house movie tropes.

In a thread where the screenwriter answered fan questions on Twitter, Johnson-McGoldrick gave his response to building the horror franchise into something bigger.
So I’ve never done this before, but on the assumption that some of you who’ve followed me are into movies and TV and writing and stuff I’ve been working on, I’m gonna open it up to Q&A for anyone interested.
And no, @SmrutiAnmol, I don’t know when the C3 teaser is coming out.?

He answered fan questions about Aquaman 2, his favorite moments in horror cinema as well as his feelings about working with The Conjuring 2 crew.
Hmm… Good question. We’re not taking any one particular comic book story and adapting it, but if you want to know the vibe we’re going for, pick up pretty much any Silver Age story featuring Black Manta.

It’s going good! I’m texting with JW about the draft of the script right now — I think you’re gonna dig it!

One last bit of trivia — that moment in ORPHAN was in the script, but the interaction between them is genuine. Aryana was very young and a little nervous, but @VeraFarmiga really got her to open up and the reason that scene is great is because the connection there is real.

Chad & Carey are terrific guys, James Wan is about the greatest collaborator a writer could work with & utterly passionate about everything he does — and @VeraFarmiga and @patrickwilson73 make everyone look good by elevating everything they’re in.

Most importantly though, he reveals the new Conjuring film will break free from the typical haunted house formula. He answers a question mostly regarding famed horror director James Wan’s upcoming film Malignant saying he wasn’t extensively involved but drops some interesting news about the new Conjuring film.
I was not extensively involved in “Malignant” — all I can say is that you should see it as soon as you have a chance.
C3 is a completely different movie than the first two. The franchise is expanding beyond the “haunted house” formula.

Wan directed the first two instalments while staying on in a producing role for the series’ spinoffs like Annabelle and The Nun.
The film franchise is based on true events of investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, the latter who died at age 92 last year.
The owners of the home where the film takes place spoke with Sun Journal last summer saying they believed it was actually haunted.
“We had doors opening, footsteps and knocks,” new owner Cory Heinzen explained. “I’ve had a hard time staying there by myself. I don’t have the feeling of anything evil, [but] it’s very busy. You can tell there’s a lot of things going on in the house.”

“This whole journey has been both scary—for many reasons other than paranormal—and exciting all at once,” Jennifer Heinzen added. “I love that we have the opportunity to share the home with others.”
The third film in the series is still set for release on September 11, 2020, while director Michael Chaves has been hyping fans up for its release.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will be reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren in the new film.
Production studio New Line Cinema describes the plot which you can read below and it does indeed sound like a break away from a typical haunted house film.
“The Devil Made Me Do It reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.”
