We’re officially in full swing for awards season. With the Golden Globes having come and gone, all eyes are on the Oscars, and Black Panther is already making history.

The Marvel flick nabbed a Best Picture nomination, making it the first superhero film to do so across 91 years of the Academy Awards.

The film will go up against A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Green Book, Roma, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite and Vice.

Black Panther’s nomination should really come as no surprise due to the trailblazer’s reception since hitting theaters in February 2018.

With just a little over a month in theaters, it became the highest-grossing superhero film of all time by passing up previous record holder, The Avengers.

In nearly the same amount of time, it became the most tweeted about movie ever. After a month, the flick was tweeted about more than 35 million times, beating out previous record holders Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, which were bumped to second and third place, respectively.

Black Panther’s other nominations

Best Picture isn’t the only nomination Black Panther is up for as they snagged seven nods total.

In Costume Design, they’ll be facing off with The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, The Favourite, Mary Poppins Returns and Mary Queen Of Scots. The Academy is also recognizing the film for Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Production Design.

They’re also nominated for Original Score and Original Song (“All The Stars”), the latter of which is up against RBG (“I’ll Fight”), Mary Poppins Returns (“The Place Where Lost Things Go”), A Star Is Born (“Shallow”) and The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs (“When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings”).

However, it isn’t the only superhero film up for an award. Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse are nominated for Visual Effects and Animated Feature Film, respectively.

The 91st Academy Awards will air on ABC Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8:00 p.m. EST. Check out the full list of nominees here.
