Linkin Park’s “In The End” video just reached this YouTube milestone

This October marks the 20-year anniversary of Linkin Park‘s 2000 album Hybrid Theory. Although it has been nearly two decades since its release, the album still continues to hold importance within the industry and Linkin Park fans today.

Now, Linkin Park’s video for “In The End” has just surpassed a major YouTube streaming milestone.

Linkin Park shot the “In The End” video during a break from Ozzfest in July of 2001. The iconic video features the band surrounded by ever-changing landscapes while fighting against the world’s natural elements.

The video’s co-director Joseph Haun spoke about the video’s concept and visuals in a 2002 interview with MTV.

“When you hear the song, there’s basically a cycle going on in the song,” Hahn said. “And that’s what is going on in the video. There’s a life cycle taking place from the environment that’s desolate, it’s all dry. [It] basically goes from that point of there being nothing to the end where a whole evolution takes place.”

Now, the “In The End” video has officially surpassed a billion views on YouTube. The video was originally added onto the streaming platform in 2009. Linkin Park first accomplished this milestone with the “Numb” video which surpassed one billion views in November 2018.

This feat, however, is not an easy one to accomplish. Recently, the only rock band to have videos reach the same milestone is twenty one pilots. Their “Ride” video hit a billion views this week, joining their “Heathens” and “Stressed Out” videos.

However, despite the success of “In The End,” Chester Bennington revealed in an interview that he didn’t particularly like the song at first.

“I was never a fan of ‘In The End’ and I didn’t even want it to be on the record, honestly,” he says. “How wrong could I have possibly been? I basically decided at that point I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about, so I leave that to other people who are actually talented at somehow picking songs that people are going to like the most. It also gave me a good lesson, as an artist, that I don’t necessarily have to only make music, in my band, that I want to listen to. Now I love ‘In The End.’ I think it’s such a great song. I actually see how good of a song it is, it was just hard for me to see it at the time.”

Nathan Cox, the other “In The End” video co-director, also shared in the 2002 MTV interview that it took nearly three months to convince the label to create the video the way Linkin Park wanted to.

“Originally, the label thought it was too light,” Cox said. “They wanted me to give it some teeth. So I created the rain scenario and the cycle of life that would go ugly for a while and these thorns that would come out of the ground and the label eventually bought it and dug what we were doing.”

At the time of shooting the video, Hybrid Theory already had two hit singles. Linkin Park was also in the Top 10 of the Billboard album charts. At the 2002 MTV VMAs, “In The End” went on to win Best Rock Video. However, Linkin Park lost to Eminem‘s “Without Me” video for the coveted Video Of The Year award.
