'Umbrella Academy' star ponders "completely insane" future if renewed

As we anxiously await the green light for The Umbrella Academy season 2, we’re left waiting and theorizing what could be in store for our favorite superheroes. David Castañeda, who plays Diego, sat down in an interview to reveal what the future could hold for Number Two.

Castañeda sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his character’s arc and the routes Diego’s story could take.

“Diego was very much a guy with a chip on his shoulder but was very oblivious of it because he had one way of thinking,” he says. “And the relationship between every single sibling that Diego had to me was so special.

“[Diego] doesn’t know what else to do. He’s a kid in a man’s body. Diego sees his siblings, and they have these amazing powers, and they’re not using them for the good, or at least what they got programmed to do by Reginald Hargreeves. Diego doesn’t know anything different. It’s not so much of trying to help you because you need to be helped. It’s, ‘I’m going to help you so you see me and give me validation.'”

The one person Diego is able to open up to within the series is his mother—who just so happens to not be a person at all but a robot. According to Castañeda, this reveals that Diego “doesn’t know what love is. He doesn’t know how to interpret it.”

So where could we see Diego’s character go next? The Number Two actor shares a couple of possible scenarios.

“One of the best things about the show is how the characters arc, and it takes its time to see people grow out of the traumas that they have,” he explains. “I’d like to see where Diego goes. He’s able to cope with a lot more things, but now he lost his mom, [and] he lost Patch. He could either go completely insane off of it, or he might just be a kid.”

Why Number Two differs from comics to screen

If you’ve seen the show (and let’s be real, who hasn’t?), then you’re well aware of Number Two’s ability to throw objects with incredible accuracy.

It’s a pretty impressive power, but one that is completely different from his role as The Kraken in the comics—a character known for his ability to hold his breath underwater.

Castañeda sat down with Digital Spy to explain why the change in superpower was necessary to keep the show rooted in reality.

“[Showrunner Steve Blackman] wanted to ground the comic book even more,” he shares. “So for example, Klaus doesn’t levitate in the show, whereas in the comic book he does.

“And there’s something about seeing someone who has actually no real supernatural powers and only being able to throw things with precision that kind of makes people be like, ‘Oh, I can see that, I can put that person in real life, and I can see it play out as a human being.’

“You have Luther who has superstrength, and you have Allison who can change the reality…and the fact that he can’t even be the one on top in the show, the resentment toward the father plays out even more because he is obviously placed at number two because he doesn’t have the powers one would say are divine,” he adds.
