Denzel Curry taps Kenny Mason for new single “SKED” https://www.altpress.com/denzel-curry-kenny-mason-sked-listen/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 18:34:44 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/?p=218662 Head to the AP Shop for limited-edition Denzel Curry vinyl.

Denzel Curry has shared the new single “SKED,” which features Atlanta up-and-comer Kenny Mason. The blazing song follows four sold-out shows at the famous Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, where Mason made a surprise appearance during one of the nights to perform “SKED.”

The new track comes with a tripped-out music video, directed by Omar Jones, that only includes Curry’s part. You’ll need to listen to the full song on streaming services to hear Mason’s verse, which keeps pace with Curry’s combustible raps.

“If people had the choice of making my music for me, they would make [2018 album] TA13OO 20,000 times,” Curry told AP last year during his cover story interview. “If they have the choice of making my music for me, they would make Imperial 50,000 times. They would do that over and over and over again. So that’s why I take it upon myself to switch every time. They’ll never know what to expect. My greatest attribute is being unpredictable. But it’s also very scary that I’m unpredictable because you never know what you’re gonna get.”

Check out both versions of “SKED” below.

Watch Denzel Curry’s jazzy Tiny Desk Concert https://www.altpress.com/denzel-curry-tiny-desk-concert/ Wed, 29 Jun 2022 22:47:40 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/denzel-curry-tiny-desk-concert/ Denzel Curry appeared on NPR‘s Tiny Desk Concert, performing a number of songs from his discography. Curry was joined by DJ POSHtronaut and the Cold-Blooded Soul Band.

Curry’s understated approach to creating the tracks on Melt My Eyez See Your Future made their transition to live accompaniment that much sweeter. The band, boasting a 10-piece configuration, supplied Curry with each bass groove or trumpet wail the artist needed to recontextualize his discography for the performance.

The crew’s effortless cohesion was evident not only from their performance but also from Curry’s celebratory shouts.

“We only did this rehearsal twice,” Curry says after a stunning rendition of “Troubles.”

It seems Curry’s earlier work was also begging for the neo-soul treatment his later works received. “DIET_,” “CLOUT COBAIN | CLOUT CO13A1N” and “RICKY” all soar to new heights against a choir of brass and tenderly plucked strings.

For the new dates, Curry will be making stops in Atlanta, Boston, Philadelphia, New York City and more.

In April, Curry connected with Alternative Press for issue #405, where he discussed his creative process while making fifth album Melt My Eyez See Your Future.

“I just took all the shit that I like, and I had to put it in a way that was interesting,” he says. “I didn’t make it super corny. I kept all the lyrics real. I kept everything real. But when you hear those beats, the beats was more important than the lyrics. Especially nowadays, people be like [mumbles], but that beat is knocking. The beat is what’s gonna hypnotize you. And that’s what I knew was important. So just blending all these influences. I knew they all had to be cohesive in a way, but different.”

Presale tickets will be available starting June 22 at 10 a.m. local time through June 23 at 10 p.m. local time. General sale begins June 24 at 10 a.m. local time. Check here for more information.
