Ash Costello is the renown voice behind goth metal rockers New Years Day. Notorious for her steel reinforced voice, we asked Ash to keep quiet, gave her some markers and left her bandmates, Nikki Misery and Frankie Sil, to figure out the answers she drew.

In this APTV exclusive, Costello discloses the lyric she is most proud of writing, her absolute favorite My Chemical Romance track and picks ideal non-music gigs for her and the rest of New Years Day.

After teasing a mysterious trailer earlier this month hinting at new music on the horizon, New Years Day dropped their second single from their forthcoming album Unbreakable. Following “Skeletons,” the new song is titled “Shut Up.”

While incorporating new and innovative approaches to the genre, frontwoman Ash Costello radiates feelings of women’s empowerment and independence.

“‘Shut Up” was written in a day, which just doesn’t happen,” Costello says in a story with Blabbermouth. “I was going through some heavy personal stuff, and I was just, ‘Don’t tell me what I want. Shut up and give it to me.’”

You can listen to the track below.

Additionally, you can listen to “Skeletons,” which was released back in November below.

“I love heavy riffs, I love headbanging, I love jumping,” Costello says about “Skeletons.” “I love heavy riffage, but I just felt like what New Years Day never had was [a] sing-along, fun chorus with a cool tag.”

Unbreakable is due out April 26. You can preorder your copy of it here.

The band will hit the road in April with Ice Nine Kills and From Ashes To New as support on Falling In Reverse’s headliner. Check out the dates below with tickets available here.
