Often, the lines between those different types of entertainment became blurred, much to superfans’ delight. Cameos from big-name musicians or even entire bands were a constant in the biggest TV shows and movies of the time.

We can never resist a walk down memory lane, so here are 10 times alt musicians made appearances in TV shows. You can check those out below.

Avril Lavigne

Sabrina The Teenage Witch was a staple for Halloween lovers everywhere from the late ’90s to the early 2000s. Scene queen Avril Lavigne made an appearance on the show because Sabrina is a witchy teen, so of course she’d be a major fan. In iconic fashion, Lavigne performs “Sk8er Boi” for the make-believe audience, even though she’s being blackmailed by a trope of gangsters.

Death Cab For Cutie

Death Cab For Cutie were a central part of the storyline on The O.C., thanks to Seth Cohen’s obsession with the band. The show featured quite a few DCFC songs throughout the years. But eventually, the band appear on the show to perform a concert at the Bait Shop because it’d be a shame if they didn’t.

Sonic Youth

The Upper East Side’s elite in Gossip Girl may not look like your typical alt-rock fans, but then Sonic Youth made an appearance on the show. The band played at a fancy New York City party, and the vibe actually fit perfectly on the show.

Sleater-Kinney

Indie legends Sleater-Kinney performed a rock show fit for the riot grrrls of The L Word back in its third season. Thanks to an awkward sexual encounter, their set was cut short. However, the snippet was like a glimpse at one of the band’s old-school live performances.

Alice Cooper

That ’70s Show was the peak stoner TV show back in the 2000s and even featured a cameo from rock icon Alice Cooper. Eric Forman worried that his girlfriend Donna Pinciotti would leave him for a rock star like Cooper. And honestly, Eric didn’t stand a chance in competing against the eyeliner-clad rock legend.

No Doubt

While more than a few bands have performed for a stuffy Upper East Side crowd on Gossip Girl, No Doubt‘s appearance was markedly different. Fans see Lily van der Woodsen back in her ’80s heyday as she watched No Doubt perform an Adam & The Ants cover song, “Stand And Deliver.”

Prince

Honestly, it’s still amazing that New Girl got the one and only Prince to make an appearance on the show in 2014. As it turns out, Prince was a huge fan. The episode marked his first-ever role in a television sitcom, and he even had a hand in its design. According to creator Liz Meriwether, Prince wanted the party in the episode to imitate his real-life parties as closely as possible. Additionally, Meriwether revealed he picked Zooey Deschanel’s wardrobe, the paintings on the wall and the hairstyles, among other things.

Fall Out Boy

Fall Out Boy have performed twice as a band on One Tree Hill, which led to Pete Wentz becoming quite essential to the plotline for a few episodes. There’s even an episode named “I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy And All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me,” which is very on-brand for the band.

David Bowie

While David Bowie has made a cameo on Twin Peaks, his role in a 2006 episode of Extras is truly one to never forget. Andy Millman attempts to grapple with his failed sitcom and confides in none other than Bowie about the situation. To make matters worse, Bowie wrote a song about the situation, referencing Millman as the “little fat man who sold his soul.”

Korn

Korn made a brief cameo on Monk in a pretty hilarious way in 2005. While Monk is putting the pieces together about a murder in a traffic jam, he needs to find a bathroom. He ends up at Korn‘s tour bus and has an eye-opening revelation, all thanks to the bathroom break.

10 records that could be the soundtrack to your next meditation session https://www.altpress.com/alternative-albums-for-meditation/ Wed, 12 May 2021 15:55:52 +0000 When life gets hectic, it’s important to take a minute for yourself to reset and clear your mind.

Music is always a go-to way to destress, whether it’s validating our feelings or mellowing us out.

Read more: 11 rising alternative artists who fine-tuned their sound this past year

Meditation is a practice of mindfulness and breathing that helps you take a moment for yourself. It doesn’t have to be in-depth, either—just taking a few minutes to sit, clear your mind and focus on your breathing can do wonders for your health.

But like we said, music is always our No. 1 priority. So we thought it’d be a good idea to pinpoint 10 releases that pair well with meditation, breathing exercises or moments where you need to take a mental break.

mama’s boy – LANY

LANY‘s third studio album, mama’s boy, is a steady, chill record perfect for sitting outside and basking in the sun. Each song is unified by a dreamy feeling with a theme of introspection and spirituality. There are a few love songs, but nothing too sad to make you lose your train of thought. It’s the ideal upbeat, nondistracting album to put on in the background while you just chill out.

Reverie Lagoon: Music For Escapism Only – Seahaven

Seahaven veered from their usual pop-punk sound in 2014 with Reverie Lagoon: Music For Escapism Only. And each song does what the title suggests—it helps your mind escape your constant flow of thoughts to go inward and chill. There are a few tracks with heavier guitar and drum beats, but it’s nothing that will get your heart rate up too much.

I Need To Start A Garden – Haley Heynderickx

Haley Heynderickx‘s debut album is composed of eight tracks that can help you relax. It’ll take any feelings of uncertainty or loneliness and let them go. The indie-folk atmosphere will help you feel safe and comfortable while you allow your mind to visualize the calming scenes that the songs conjure in your head.

Transatlanticism – Death Cab For Cutie

While Death Cab For Cutie‘s Transatlanticism is full of heartbreaking tracks that convey the feelings of distance and loneliness, it’s also sonically low-key. The tracks contain texture and emotion, especially melancholic piano and moody guitar parts. Ultimately, it’s an album that will ignite your senses and allow you to take in your surroundings.

ZABA – Glass Animals

Glass Animals‘ debut album, ZABA, is a psychedelic, electro-pop album made for zoning out. It has a futuristic feel that will take your mind on a journey of its own, all through hazy melodies and electronic beats.

The Hawk Is Howling – Mogwai

For a truly meditative experience, Mogwai‘s 2008 album, The Hawk Is Howling, follows a slow-and-steady tempo made for aligning with breathing exercises. Each song is distinct, but they all blend together, thanks to atmospheric guitars and low-and-slow basslines.

Diary – Sunny Day Real Estate

Sunny Day Real Estate marked their place in emo history with Diary. This is probably the “loudest” album on the list, thanks to a few moments of heavy guitar and drum beats. However, if you’re going on a mind-clearing walk and want to stay motivated, this record is the best of both worlds.

tuck me in – boy pablo

boy pablo’s latest EP, tuck me in, is five tracks of absolute peace. The songs confront themes of heartbreak and introspective feelings but with a bedroom-pop feel that is nothing but chill.

Dive – Tycho

Tycho is able to capture raw emotion and relay it sonically, particularly on his 2011 album, Dive. The album has a lo-fi sound that makes you feel as if you’re embarking on a trip to paradise. Plus, it’s a great record to put on when you want to drift off to sleep.

Ambient 1: Music For Airports – Brian Eno

Brian Eno is best known for his producing credits on albums with artists such as David Bowie, U2, Talking Heads and more. But his ambient records are the ultimate soundtracks for meditation. It’s like a background track for your brain to clear out all of the bad thoughts and accept peace.

10 alternative music videos that brought your wildest dreams to life https://www.altpress.com/dreamy-alternative-music-videos/ Wed, 12 May 2021 00:55:25 +0000 Every music video an artist releases is a labor of love. Whether it’s a DIY home video or highly produced with costumes and epic themes, musicians get to add a visual element to their lyrics and melodies that come from a deep place.

A lot of times, music videos will reflect the abstractness of dreams. With clips of different scenes, psychedelic visuals and sometimes unexpected twists, a music video can look like the visual representation of an amazing dream or a horrible nightmare.

Read more: 10 modern sad songs that will fit right in on your emo playlists

Often, those videos tend to be abstract, drenched in symbolism and imagery for fans to pick apart.

We decided to find 10 videos from some of our favorite alt artists that make you feel like you’re in a dream. You can check those out below.

Waterparks – “You’d Be Paranoid Too (If Everyone Was Out To Get You)”

Waterparks have been getting more experimental with their videos by the track, especially when Awsten Knight is involved in the directing. In the latest video for “You’d Be Paranoid Too,” there are several eye-catching moments, such as Knight going backward on a bicycle that he isn’t even peddling, which makes you do a double-take. Or the moment when Knight is lifting weights, singing dark lyrics about his mental health and wearing rings that contain moving human eyeballs. It’s a video that throws you for a loop and one that needs to be watched twice to really understand.

Owl City – “Vanilla Twilight”

Throwing it back to the Owl City days, the video for “Vanilla Twilight” is pretty crazy. The entire visual shows a suburban town, where every person stops in their tracks to look at a miraculous sky. It has an apocalyptic feel, and to throw you off even more, basketball star Shaquille O’Neal is there, too.

Weezer – “Pork And Beans”

Weezer‘s video for “Pork And Beans” is like a bad dream you’ve had after watching too many videos on YouTube in the 2000s. First of all, the band are all wearing lab coats and performing under a nonstop stream of exploding soda. And to make it even weirder, clips of old YouTube videos are thrown in, sometimes with characters superimposed onto the band’s stage. It truly makes you just say, “What the hell?”

Simple Creatures – “Thanks, I Hate It”

When Simple Creatures released the video for “Thanks, I Hate It,” they referred to it as “nightmare fuel.” And you really don’t know what you’re in for until you press play. The video follows Mark Hoppus and Alex Gaskarth starring in various infomercials to promote As Seen On TV products such as the Snuggie or the Shake Weight. Their faces are superimposed on a variety of different people’s bodies, transforming them into men, women and children of all ages in the ridiculous video.

Billie Eilish – “you should see me in a crown”

Nearly every video Billie Eilish releases is straight out of a nightmare, whether she’s a human bat in “all the good girls go to hell” or a monster under her bed in “bury a friend.” But the video for “you should see me in a crown” is truly terrifying because Eilish is so nonchalant about a tarantula climbing all over her body and face. It seems like one of those dreams where you’re screaming at her about the arachnid, but she just can’t hear you.

Fall Out Boy – “I Don’t Care”

Every Fall Out Boy video is a sight to behold, but “I Don’t Care” is by far the strangest. It features a few cameos, particularly when the band members take off their disguises Scooby-Doo-style to reveal they are actually Mark Hoppus, Gabe Saporta, Spencer Pratt and Pharrell Williams. It truly will never be replicated, and that’s probably a good thing.

Phoebe Bridgers – “I Know The End”

Phoebe Bridgers‘ apocalyptic video for “I Know The End” has twists at every corner. We see Bridgers, her band and an entire locker room sport her signature skeleton onesie. She goes from calm to panicked before playing a show for a sold-out crowd. And in the strangest ending of all time, Bridgers kisses what looks to be the older version of herself after screaming in her face. And honestly, it’s a work of art.

The Smashing Pumpkins – “Tonight, Tonight”

If you’ve ever had one of those nightmares where you’re abducted by aliens, travel to the moon and feel like you’re in the Wizard Of Oz, you basically dreamt the video for the Smashing Pumpkins track “Tonight, Tonight.” It’s in the style of a silent film, which just makes every encounter seem even more bizarre.

5 Seconds Of Summer – “Wildflower”

5SOS went psychedelic with their video for “Wildflower,” using plenty of colors, animations and special effects to radiate optimism. It’s basically the visual representation of a ’70s-inspired drug trip, just with a modern-day pop-rock band.

Paramore – “Hard Times”

Speaking of throwbacks, Paramore recreated the ’80s with their video for “Hard Times.” It’s dreamy because the band are actually playing in the clouds. And as the song continues, animations accompanying their movements make it look like they are real-life video game characters.

Because we don’t know how to celebrate without music, we decided to make a playlist of 11 songs about motherhood and moms. Play these for the moms and maternal influences in your life to show your gratitude.

“Stacy’s Mom” – Bowling For Soup

Even though this is a cover, Bowling For Soup‘s version of “Stacy’s Mom” is a must-listen for all the pop-punk mamas in your life. Play this song to let your mom know that she has it going on.

“My Mother & I” – Lucy Dacus

Lucy Dacus will tug at your mom’s heartstrings with this ode to mother-daughter relationships. “My Mother & I” is an emotional track about the similarities that moms share with their daughters, and it will definitely make your mom want to give you a hug.

“Thank You Mom” – Good Charlotte

Nothing shows your mom how thankful you are for everything she does better than this Good Charlotte banger. Nearly every lyric on this song would also make an adorable Instagram caption to accompany a photo of your mom, so it’s a win-win.

“House” – KAINA

KAINA writes an ode to immigrant mothers in “House,” which is heavy and heartfelt. It will probably make you tear up, but you’ll recognize the beautiful lyrics and message behind it.

“Mama, I’m Coming Home” – Ozzy Osbourne

You can’t pass up the opportunity to play a little Ozzy Osbourne this Mother’s Day. It’s basically a way to tell your mom she’s always right, even when you disagree. And it’s perfect for a mother-child karaoke session.

“High Hopes” and “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” – Panic! At The Disco

Mothers just want the best for their kids, or you could say they have “High Hopes.” This Panic! At The Disco banger is perfect for celebrating your wins with your mom because you wouldn’t have been able to do it without her. Plus, their other high-energy track “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” is also perfect for celebrating when you’ve achieved a major milestone.

“Vacant Home” – Movements

Movements‘ “Vacant Home” is the song to put on to cry with your mom. It’s written from the perspective of someone who lost their mom and feels like they don’t have a sense of home anymore. It’s a good track to remember that life is temporary, so we need to appreciate the ones we love, especially mom.

“Mama Said” – Metallica

If you have a mom in your life who’s a metalhead, you’re obligated to play some Metallica on her special day. This song is all about a mom letting her son go and be his own person, taking the lessons she taught him along for the ride.

“House Of Gold” – twenty one pilots

twenty one pilots‘ anthem “House Of Gold” was a huge hit when it was released, but it’s also one of the most underrated Mother’s Day jams. It’s all about honoring your mom like a queen and taking care of her in return.

“I Prefer Your Love” – St. Vincent

St. Vincent‘s “I Prefer Your Love” is all about craving the love and care that only comes from a mother. It tugs at your heartstrings and will let your mama know that her love is one in a million and can’t be replicated by anyone else.

10 drag musicians breaking down the boundaries of alternative music https://www.altpress.com/alternative-drag-musicians/ Wed, 05 May 2021 15:55:28 +0000 The world of drag is all-encompassing, combining fashion, performance and music to create a fabulous, over-the-top persona.

Many drag queens are musicians in their own right, writing songs and releasing hit albums.

Read more: Trixie Mattel and Orville Peck honor country history in “Jackson”—watch

Whether they gained popularity on a show such as RuPaul’s Drag Race or garnered a fanbase thanks to the internet, there’s no shortage of alt drag queens who are pushing boundaries and making truly kickass music.

We decided to highlight 10 alt drag musicians who you need to add to your playlist. You can check those out below.

Adore Delano

Adore Delano, aka AltPress’ No. 358 cover star, has been a scene queen since first appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2014. Like many drag queens, Delano’s early music falls in the dance/electronic realm but with an undeniable punk-rock spin. Her 2017 album, Whatever, is guitar-heavy with rock ballads and catchy pop-punk tracks such as “27 Club” or “Princess Cut.”

Kameron Michaels

Kameron Michaels might have made a name for herself for being the ultimate Cher lookalike, but her music is definitely more influenced by electronic and alternative musicians. Her 2019 anthem “Freedom” has a pop-punk edge with an electronic twist, and it’s all about being unapologetically yourself.

KATYA

KATYA‘s EP Vampire Fitness is the dark and brooding soundtrack that vampires probably would play at a late-night gym. The album is edgy and in your face, with KATYA performing in both English and Portuguese throughout the tracklist.

Sharon Needles

Another RuPaul alum turned musician, Sharon Needles is an electro-pop master. Songs such as “Dirty Diaper” or “666” have a dark edge but still make you want to dance. However, “Dracula” sounds like it could be performed by Fall Out Boy.

Jinkx Monsoon

While Jinkx Monsoon‘s style is influenced by cabaret, show tunes and big band, she definitely has a few alt tracks in her discography. Her cover of Radiohead‘s “Creep” is as haunting as it is beautiful. There’s also her anthemic ballad “This Town,” with its steady drumbeat and apathetic attitude.

Alaska Thunderfuck

Alaska Thunderfuck is the ultimate no-fucks-given queen with an undeniable comedic edge to her music. Her song “The T” with Delano is a dark, gritty rap track that’s everything people love about Thunderfuck. And her morbid video for “Your Makeup Is Terrible” is a wild ride you can’t stop watching, set to a catchy electronic beat.

Aja

Aja‘s been paving the way for drag hip-hop artists with tracks such as “Brujería” and “Crossbow.” Their style seemingly takes influence from edgy SoundCloud rap but with complex dance beats that put a unique stamp on every song.

The Vixen

Speaking of drag rap, the Vixen‘s 2020 album, Commercial Break, is an innovation in dark, punkish hip-hop. Songs such as “Give A Bitch A Break” and “Tea Party” are the epitome of her style—gritty, fast and danceable.

Shea Couleé

Shea Couleé is giving us electro-indie meets R&B with an almost emo vibe with their songs. Tracks such as “Gasoline” and “Ride” are undeniably atmospheric, with the dreamy instrumentals and vocals blending together as one.

Yvie Oddly

If you’re looking for dark hip-hop with attitude, look no further than Yvie Oddly. Her 2020 album, Drag Trap, is just that—an experimental, artistic take on rap music from a drag queen perspective.

To celebrate, we decided to highlight 10 emerging Asian-American and Pacific Islander artists who are changing the game of alternative music.

Rina Sawayama

2020 will be remembered for many things, one of them being Rina Sawayama‘s breakout year. She dropped the genre-bending album SAWAYAMA, which was the equivalent of a musical self-portrait last year. Additionally, she’s collabed with Elton John, so she’s really just going up from here.

ASHWARYA

ASHWARYA combined Indian music and psychedelic pop with a hip-hop edge to create a totally unique sound. The Melbourne-based artist has also collaborated with Vic Mensa on the anthemic “TO THE NIGHT.” As for her other tracks, check out her mind-bending “PSYCHO HOLE,” which will command your attention.

UMI

Japanese musician UMI creates lo-fi, laid-back alternative music with an R&B flair. Her latest release, Introspection Reimagined, is the epitome of her genre-bending capabilities. Also, don’t forget to check out UMI’s biggest hit, “Remember Me.”

mxmtoon

mxmtoon is a pioneer in the bedroom indie-pop scene. The Chinese American artist is known for her dreamy vocals, often played over the ukulele. Check out her song “used to you” from her 2020 album, dawn, or her most recent release, a cover of Radiohead‘s “Creep.”

khai dreams

khai dreams is a half-Vietnamese singer-songwriter from the Pacific Northwest. They make dreamy indie-pop tracks that are modern-day love songs. Listen to “Sunkissed” or “Lost In You” for a heavy dose of affectionate tunes.

zeph

Zephani Jong, better known as zeph, makes music that soundtracks the tough feelings in life. In fact, her dreamy sound is inspired by movie scores and soundtracks, and her lyrics are an embodiment of her innermost feelings of heartbreak, sadness, loneliness, love and more.

REI AMI

REI AMI is an alt-pop/dark rapper who’s like a hip-hop version of Billie Eilish. She makes sad, vulnerable tracks such as “SNOWCONE” and “DICTATOR” that are heavy on the feels but with an experimental edge.

beabadoobee

beabadoobee was born in the Philippines, raised in London and is known around the world for her DIY indie-pop songs that make you feel like you’re floating. Listen to her tracks such as “Tired” or “Last Day On Earth,” which take the bedroom-pop sound to another level.

Lucy Park

Lucy Park takes pieces of R&B, pop, soul and alternative music to make songs that have an undeniable smoothness. To get a taste of what she brings to the table, bump “Rain” or “True To You” to the top of your Spotify queue.

Joji

Joji‘s lo-fi, electronic music is the definition of atmospheric sound. His sophomore album, Nectar, is an inside look into the brain of Joji, and its sound will swallow you up and sink you into its dreamy hold.

10 artists who bring together elements of alternative and hip-hop https://www.altpress.com/pop-punk-hip-hop-artists/ Thu, 29 Apr 2021 15:55:18 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/pop-punk-hip-hop-artists/ In the year 2021, being confined to one genre is a thing of the past. Artists have pushed the boundaries when it comes to sound, so even the lines of pop punk, hip-hop, rock, heavy metal and more can be blurred.

Particularly in the past few years, rap and punk have formed a cohesive bond. Look at Machine Gun Kelly‘s recent album, which was totally pop-punk and rock-based. Or an artist like Vic Mensa, who shifts through a wide range of genres seamlessly in one song.

Read more: 40 pop-punk albums from the 2000s that’ll make you grab your old Chucks

And as this shift has happened, some strictly pop-punk and rock artists have begun expanding into other realms, such as hip-hop. We decided to shout out 10 artists who incorporate hip-hop elements into their alternative music.

Chase Atlantic

Chase Atlantic started out making strictly pop-punk and rock music that always had a bit of an alternative edge. And their latest album, BEAUTY IN DEATH, is filled with the band’s signature blend of hip-hop sensibilities, alt-rock resolve and emo lyricism that sounds like it was made in a bedroom—because it was.

All Time Low

All Time Low were pop-punk vets in the 2000s, but like a lot of bands, their sound has shifted over the years. They’ve dabbled in experimenting with hip-hop through collaborations with artists such as blackbear and adding an edgier beat to their tracks that isn’t always guitar-heavy.

Waterparks

Waterparks have a quintessential pop-punk sound mixed with elements of electronic music. In their most recent releases, they’ve added bass-heavy beats, which we’re sure to hear more of on their forthcoming album, Greatest Hits. Plus, collaborations with new artists such as DE’WAYNE even feature fast singing by Awsten Knight, which sounds like the rock version of rapping.

Travis Barker

blink-182 drummer Travis Barker is a pioneer when it comes to mixing rap and pop-punk music. He’s collaborated with major artists across the genre spectrum. If you don’t believe us, listen to his collaborations with Vic Mensa, YUNGBLUD and Halsey, Lil Peep, 93PUNX and more.

Fall Out Boy

Fall Out Boy hit the scene as one of the biggest emo bands of all time. But as they’ve grown and changed throughout their career, so has their sound. After their late 2009 hiatus, they returned with new music that’s inspired by hip-hop, synth pop and other genres. Additionally, they’ve released collabs with rappers such as Lil Peep, Wyclef Jean and more.

jxdn

jxdn began his music career just a year ago after reaching TikTok virality, and boy has he had quite the start. His pop-punk edge caught the attention of Barker, Machine Gun Kelly and more. He has a pop-punk sound that takes influences from SoundCloud rap, which is reminiscent of MGK‘s recent shift.

YUNGBLUD

YUNGBLUD has pioneered his own genre of angst-filled, honest pop-punk anthems with a hip-hop spin that resonates with young people today. He’s collaborated with artists across the board, including Bring Me The Horizon, blackbear, Halsey, MGK and more. And his sound gets edgier with every song he drops.

grandson

grandson is a master at combining heavy guitars, trap beats and electro influence with a punk flair. He’s created his own niche of the punk-rap genre, which is only influenced by his various collabs, including tracks with Mike Shinoda, phem, Tom Morello, Whethan and more.

K.Flay

K.Flay has developed her own style that combines elements of lo-fi, pop, indie and hip-hop. She’s worked with various artists, including WhethangrandsonX Ambassadors, which exudes confidence and power weaved throughout groovy beats.

MOD SUN

MOD SUN‘s music is highly influenced by hip-hop, but he did get his start in the pop-punk scene. He’s played for various bands before going solo, combining elements of punk, psychedelic rock and hip-hop. And he recently collaborated with Avril Lavigne, which automatically makes him one of us.

10 modern covers that renew the spirit of classic-rock songs https://www.altpress.com/modern-covers-of-decades-old-songs/ Wed, 28 Apr 2021 22:55:25 +0000 Even though we’re always on the hunt for new releases, covers of old songs from our favorite artists are always gifts welcomed with open arms.

There’s something about a cover song that is always exciting, especially when other musicians are the ones showing their karaoke skills. It’s cool to see the artist put their signature spin on a song that so many people know the words to. And it gives us a glimpse at our favorite artists’ favorite artists, which is always fun.

Read more: 10 alternative covers that completely transformed pop hits

To prove it to you, we decided to find 10 modern covers of decades-old songs that feel like a total rebirth. You can check those out below.

Miley Cyrus – “Black Dog” (Led Zeppelin)

It’d be unfair to not start this list off with the queen of covers, Miley Cyrus. She’s covered artists across the board, but this bombastic performance of Led Zeppelin‘s “Black Dog” shows her rock star power. Her voice hits all of those long-winded notes with ease, proving that she can make any song she wants something all her own.

YUNGBLUD – “Wild Horses” (The Rolling Stones)

YUNGBLUD‘s voice is truly one of a kind—it exudes attitude and edginess. He’s taken on pop hits, hip-hop tunes and classic-rock songs, such as this cover of “Wild Horses” by the Rolling Stones. And he performs the whole thing on his bathroom counter, which is even more of an impressive feat.

Halsey – “Dreams” (Fleetwood Mac)

Halsey is another artist who has a highly recognizable, dreamy voice that makes every cover sound like her own song. We’ve seen her take on modern hits by Juice WRLD, Justin Bieber and more. But this performance of “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac alongside country artist Kelsea Ballerini is a sultry take on the classic track.

Brendon Urie – “Luck Be A Lady” and “Fly Me To The Moon” (Frank Sinatra)

Panic! At The Disco‘s Brendon Urie is a performer through and through, no matter what he’s singing. And the perfect example is his Frank Sinatra mashup at the 2014 APMAs. He covered “Fly Me To The Moon” and “Luck Be A Lady,” accompanied by an orchestra, bringing the swing classics to the modern-day.

Weezer – “Happy Together” (The Turtles)

Weezer discovered their untapped talent for covers a few years back after they broke the internet with a rendition of “Africa” by Toto. It led to them creating an entire album of covers, including this throwback. Weezer‘s rendition of “Happy Together” by the Turtles gave a rock edge to an old-school pop hit.

twenty one pilots – “Can’t Help Falling In Love” (Elvis Presley)

We’ve heard twenty one pilots cover 2000s jams by artists such as Alicia Keys, DJ Khaled and more, but they also aren’t afraid to take it back even further. Tyler Joseph made an amazing cover of Elvis Presley‘s “Can’t Help Falling In Love” using just his voice and a ukulele. He starts the song alone in a car, only to end up onstage in front of a huge crowd singing along, which is definitely a goosebumps moment.

Patrick Stump – “In The Air Tonight” (Phil Collins)

Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy has always had a powerful and dynamic voice meant for winning karaoke contests. So this cover of Phil Collins‘ iconic track “In The Air Tonight” is a bluesy, rock-twinged rendition that we didn’t know we needed.

Cayetana – “Age Of Consent” (New Order)

New Order‘s new-wave classic “Age Of Consent” gets an alt makeover from Cayetana. The original is a teenage anthem, so the band bring it to the modern age by incorporating elements of indie rock, alternative and pop.

The Killers – “Fame” (David Bowie)

Nearly every alternative artist is inspired and in awe of David Bowie‘s legacy, which has led to more than a few covers of his songs. This rendition of “Fame” by the Killers is an homage to the funky original that makes you want to groove, but its guitar-heavy edge makes it a little more rock ‘n’ roll.

J.Fla – “Love Of My Life” (Queen)

J.Fla is the K-pop cover queen of YouTube, so it’s only fitting that she takes on a Queen song or two. Her rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody” is not to be missed, but she truly shines on her “Love Of My Life” cover. Her vocals are strong but airy, bringing a feminine and dream-like quality to the ballad.

10 artists who expanded their careers through their own companies https://www.altpress.com/artists-who-started-their-own-brand-company/ Mon, 26 Apr 2021 23:55:47 +0000 After the hell of a year that was 2020, it’s clear that nothing is ever permanent. Musicians, who make their money through merch and performances, had to stop touring. Concerts turned virtual, and meet-and-greets no longer existed.

It made everyone, not just musicians, rethink the concept of stability. This is definitely why some musicians don’t put all of their eggs into the basket of being a performer.
