With a shortened one-hour ceremony, the SAG Awards air April 4 at 9 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS.

While the event is typically held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles—the iconic venue where My Chemical Romance also made their triumphant return in 2019—this year’s ceremony will be pre-taped without an official host. Instead, several actors will appear during the presentation including Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs who both announced the nominees on Instagram in February.

Unlike other awards shows, the SAG Awards are voted on by peers who are part of SAG-AFTRA, a labor union that represents more than 160,000 actors, dancers, DJs, singers, stunt performers and voiceover artists among others.

The annual process begins with the SAG Awards Motion Picture and Television Nominating Committees, which consists of 2,500 randomly drawn active SAG-AFTRA members. Following a review of the submissions, active SAG-AFTRA members are able to vote on the final nominees in 15 categories honoring film and television.

In addition to the abbreviated and pre-taped virtual ceremony, SAG-AFTRA has also scrapped the Lifetime Achievement Award this year. First awarded in 1962 to comedian Eddie Cantor, the honor predates the annual ceremony, which did not begin until 1995. Over the years, the award has been presented to Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Debbie Reynolds and more.

Ahead of the main event this year, People, Entertainment Weekly & TNT: Screen Actors Guild Awards Pre-Show is airing at 8 p.m. ET where the stunt category winners will be revealed. Disney’s Mulan and DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 are making history in the motion picture category as this marks the first year two female-led films have been nominated for stunts.

The blockbuster films are not alone in this record-breaking year as the late Chadwick Boseman has become the first person to be nominated four times in the film categories in one year. The beloved Marvel star has been recognized for his roles in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods, earning nominations for his leading role and supporting role respectively. Both movies are also nominated in Outstanding Performance by Cast in a Motion Picture.

Boseman is nominated alongside Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman and Steven Yeun in the leading actor category. Ahmed’s nomination for his role as Ruben Stone in Sound Of Metalthe story of a metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing—marks his second at the SAG Awards.

The Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman and Oscarwinning actor is nominated for his role as Albert Sparma in the crime thriller The Little Things where he appears opposite Denzel Washington and Rami Malek.

In addition to the film categories, the SAG Awards also honor actors in television. This year, Netflix is up for 30 awards, 17 of which are on the television side. Both Bill Camp and Anya Taylor-Joy are nominated for their leading roles in The Queen’s Gambit. Ozark, The Crown, Bridgerton, Dead To Me and Cobra Kai are also being recognized across various categories.

Disney+ has also scored a few nominations with Diggs being recognized in Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his roles as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in HamiltonThe Mandalorian is also up for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series.

August Burns Red preview new EP with ferocious single “Icarus”—listen https://www.altpress.com/august-burns-red-preview-new-ep-with-ferocious-single-icarus-listen/ Thu, 25 Mar 2021 00:09:43 +0000 It’s been less than a year since August Burns Red debuted their full-length studio album Guardians. However, that hasn’t stopped them from dropping even more new tunes over the past few months. Now, August Burns Red are compiling all of their recent releases and upcoming songs into a new EP called Guardians Sessions, which arrives April 16.

This week, August Burns Red gave fans another taste of the upcoming EP with “Icarus,” a ferocious single that was originally recorded during their Guardians sessions.

For “Icarus,” August Burns Red did things somewhat differently. Alongside the powerful voice of frontman Jake Luhrs, the new track also features clean vocals from bassist Dustin Davidson. As it turns out, “Icarus” is the first August Burns Red track Davidson has ever sung on. However, when it came time to make the Guardians tracklisting, the song didn’t make the final cut.

“It’s nice to finally let the cat out of the bag on something we’ve been working on for such a long time,” guitarist JB Brubaker exclusively tells Alternative Press. “Guardians Sessions was a product of both having extra material when recording Guardians in 2019 and the pandemic forcing us off the road in March of 2020. We’ve always had a hard time staying still and tend to be a very project-oriented band. The first few months of the pandemic were devoted to the writing and recording of all the material that accompanies the Guardians B-side tracks: ‘Icarus’ and ‘Standing in the Storm.’

“I’m quite fond of the ‘Chop Suey’ and ‘Westworld’ covers as they’re the kind of tracks we normally wouldn’t have had time to do. ‘Icarus’ is the latest track we’ve shared from this release. It’s a riff song from the mind of our bassist, Dustin Davidson. The song is upbeat and has a more cheerful tone than a lot of our material. Dustin also does some clean vocals on the track which is a first for him in an ABR song.”

Back in 2015, Davidson’s pop-punk band Best Case Scenario released their first and only album Staircase Wit on Bandcamp, and the musician reveals fans of that release will hear some influence on “Icarus.” The project’s LP, which hit streaming services in 2016, features August Burns Red drummer Matt Greiner who tracked most of the drums. As well, Brubaker appears on the song “Memories On Holiday.”

“‘Icarus’ was a B-side from Guardians because it just didn’t fit the vibe of the album,” Davidson says in a press release. “I’m happy that our fans can hear it now because it’s riffy and super fun to play on guitar. It’s the first ABR song that I’ve sang on, and for fans of my side project, Best Case Scenario, I think you’ll hear the influence sprinkled throughout this one.”

“Icarus” has all of the classic elements needed for a great August Burns Red song. Along with Luhrs’ signature vocals, the new single includes heavy drum breakdowns from Greiner and melodic guitar riffs from guitarists Brent Rambler and Brubaker. Together, all of these components help create a hard-hitting track that sits perfectly within August Burns Red’s strong discography.

“Icarus” is available to stream below.

Along with “Icarus,” the Guardians Sessions EP includes a slew of other songs listeners may already be familiar with. Back in December, August Burns Red released their popular version of System Of A Down’s 2001 classic “Chop Suey!,” which also features rare clean vocals from Davidson.

Over the years, August Burns Red have kicked off their headlining sets by blasting the song before taking the stage, causing it to become an important staple within their fanbase.

“‘Chop Suey!’ grew in popularity in our camp when we began playing it during changeover during our shows,” Brubaker exclusively told Alternative Press. “Whenever we’d play a headline show, the last song played over the PA before we started our set was ‘Chop Suey!’”

As well, the Guardians Sessions EP includes “Standing In The Stormwhich debuted in January. Similar to “Icarus,” “Standing In The Storm” was also recorded during the Guardians sessions but didn’t make the album’s final tracklisting. Nevertheless, August Burns Red believe the song’s meaning is universally relatable for all who listen to it.

“‘Standing In The Storm’ is a song about fighting for something important to you, and enduring the hardships that come with that fight,” Brubaker says in a press release. “We had a lot of fun with this track and I’m pumped on how it came out.”

Along with these Guardians B-sides, August Burns Red’s new EP also includes their reprise of “Extinct By Instinct.” For the rendition, August Burns Red slowed things down and gave the track a completely different arrangement. Led by smooth and melodic guitars, “Extinct By Instinct – Reprise” offers a refreshing and stripped-down take to the original Guardians track.

Additionally, the Guardians Sessions EP also features their truly epic metal cover of the Westworld theme song which debuted earlier this month. Brubaker actually came up with the idea for the cover all the way back in 2018. However, it wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic hit that he decided to finish it.

“The soundtrack to Westworld has been a favorite of mine as long as the HBO series has existed,” Brubaker says in a press release. “I started working on a metal version of the main theme to the show back in 2018 but pushed it to the backburner as other projects took priority. When COVID sent us into lockdown, the first thing I did with my time at home was finish the Westworld cover. We recorded it in the summer of 2020 and I’m really proud of how it came out. I hope fans of the show will feel we did it justice!”

August Burns Red’s take on the Westworld theme song is available to hear below.

The Guardians Sessions EP officially arrives on digital streaming platforms and on 10-inch vinyl April 16 via Fearless Records. As well, the release also includes a special reprise of “Paramount.”

1. “Standing In The Storm”

Aaron Paul says he thought it “could be interesting” portraying Kurt Cobain https://www.altpress.com/aaron-paul-kurt-cobain/ Fri, 20 Mar 2020 22:01:03 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/aaron-paul-kurt-cobain/ Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul was in the midst of a worldwide press tour for his upcoming role in HBO‘s Westworld which was abruptly shut down due to the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic which he’s opening up about in a new interview.

While speaking with NME, Paul reveals how things have been changing for him as well as talking about how he wanted to play the role of Nirvana‘s Kurt Cobain at one time.

While speaking on how promotion for his new role is shifting currently, the actor discusses the plans they had in place which have now been canceled.

“It’s an….interesting time we’re in,” says Paul. “I was supposed to do a worldwide press tour for Westworld, and we were supposed to have a Brazil premiere, a big activation at South by Southwest festival and I was supposed to do some press and talk shows in New York – all that stuff was cancelled. Slowly but surely, every production is being shut down, which I think is the responsible thing to – just to try to stop this thing from spreading.”

Touching on how Breaking Bad became a much-discussed show among musicians, Paul says it felt like every band was watching. He also offers a story about how the Rolling Stones brought him to a show.

“Oh man, I gotta be honest, it just felt like Breaking Bad was on everyone’s tour bus. So it really felt like it was a big thing in the music industry,” says Paul. “The most surreal thing was I got invited to a Rolling Stones concert out of nowhere as their guest. Ronnie Wood wanted to meet up with me so I went backstage and met him in his dressing room, and he introduced me to Keith Richards – Keith was shirtless, smoking a joint and exactly as you’d imagine him. It felt like such a rock star moment. But it happened because they were massive fans of Breaking Bad – that’s crazy.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he discusses his love for music revealing he would love to write but jokingly says “trust me, no-one wants to listen to that!”

Paul once portrayed Weird Al Yankovic in a Funny Or Die spoof trailer for a biopic long before music biopics became as common as they are now. He says there is one musician he would like to portray on screen for real though – Kurt Cobain.

“When I first moved to LA, I thought quite a bit about Kurt Cobain and what happened and I just love Nirvana – ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was one of the first records I bought with my own money, so I’ve thought that could be interesting [to play Cobain].”

‘Cats’ pulled from Academy Awards consideration by Universal Pictures https://www.altpress.com/cats-movie-review-awards/ Sat, 28 Dec 2019 01:15:00 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/cats-movie-review-awards/ Cats is not having the best time in the starlight right now. After a review embargo, a box office and critical failure and the fact that it just looks weird it’s hard to sink any lower. Well, it’s possible. Universal Pictures just removed Cats from any Academy Award nominations.

In its opening weekend, Cats made just $15.28 million worldwide.

Universal Pictures removed Cats from their For Your Consideration campaign which means they are not seeking Academy Awards for the flick.

Recently, Westworld Evan Rachel Wood made headlines in a scathing critique of the film on Twitter. The now-deleted tweets read as follows.

“……..#cats is actually worse than I thought it would be, And I already thought it would be horrible. But….I am actually speechless. Why would you change the choreography? I…am SPEECHLESS. Its not the casts fault (sic). Its…maybe the worst thing I have ever seen. Ever.”

Wood then took to Instagram Live to better convey her thoughts.

“They changed all the iconic choreography. Took out 70% of the main characters. Changed the plot. I grew up in theatre, was married to a dancer. I have massive respect for what they do, which is why this was such a letdown and missed opportunity for that community.”

Wood is not alone in her hatred for Cats. The furry film currently sits at a dismal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes and just a 2.6/10 on IMDb.

Considering the major competition for the film on its opening weekend was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker it’s safe to assume it probably wouldn’t gross that much its opening weekend anyway. But, Universal Pictures should be preparing to take a hit on Cats considering the budget was a reported $95 million.

Check out some reactions to Cats below.

On Friday, the historic Western town fell victim to the Woolsey fire. Officials say that they are not permitted to access the damage, as the area is still active.

A statement shared by HBO reveals that the area has been evacuated and that the fire has directly not interfered with Westworld’s filming, as it is currently not in production.

“Paramount Ranch was one of the locations used during seasons one and two of Westworld, in addition to the primary location at Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita,” the statement reads. “Westworld is not currently in production, and as the area has been evacuated, we do not yet know the extent of the damage to any structures remaining there.  Most importantly, our thoughts go out to all those affected by these horrible fires.”

You can see the full extent of the damage below.

According to Variety, the town was also used in other productions such as Caught in the Draft, The Lake House, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and Quickdraw.

To fans, employees, park officials and residents, the Western town will surely be missed.

According to TheWrap, the Woolsey fire has spread to 70,000 acres and claimed the lives of two at the time of press. Around 75,000 homes are currently under evacuation.

We are sending our condolences to anyone affected by the Woolsey fire.
