Once you’ve mastered this one, be sure to see how well you really know the lyrics to “Rose-Colored Boy.” You can also test your knowledge even further by seeing if you can identify a Paramore video from a single screenshot and guess the album based upon a single song lyric.

Paramore‘s Hayley Williams teamed up with stark songster Mike Kinsella on the latter musician’s upcoming effort with his linchpin emo band, American Football.

The upcoming LP3 from the veteran Illinois act is due March 22 from Polyvinyl Records, as reported by BrooklynVegan, and features Williams on “Uncomfortably Numb.”

And while Kinsella’s seemingly doing his best to invert Pink Floyd song titles (his older brother, Joan of Arc‘s Tim Kinsella, did the same two decades ago), the singer and songwriter has also enlisted the talents of both Slowdive‘s Rachel Goswell and Land Of Talk‘s Elizabeth Powell elsewhere on the imminent new AF full-length.

But the album’s architect warns that the music therein isn’t simply the throwback emo of old. Kinsella cites song length and advanced instrumentation as accoutrements that have been added to the band’s sonic maturation.

“We’re not 23-year-old petulant kids now,” offers Kinsella. “We’re adults making concessions, and you appreciate what everyone is doing. If there’s something cool happening at the end, let’s ride it out. Let’s add a children’s choir, or vibraphones, or ringing bells. You can’t deny how long the songs are, but you’ll miss stuff if you turn it off.”

Sending a text could cost California residents more following proposed tax https://www.altpress.com/california-text-texting-tax/ Thu, 13 Dec 2018 03:35:13 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/california-text-texting-tax/ Imagine having to pay a fee to send text messages from your phone, in addition to your regular phone bill. That’s the tax that California’s Public Utilities Commission is currently considering.

At the moment, California residents are only taxed for voice calls made with their mobile phone and landlines. The fees from these calls go into Public Purpose Programs, which provides telecommunications services to low-income residents.

Read more: Here’s the most Googled person of 2018

But as residents make less phone calls, revenue to this program is decreasing. The state’s revenue for these programs has dropped from $16.5 billion to $11.3 billion in the last six years, according to USA Today.

As revenue decreases, the budget for these programs increases. The budget for subsidizing telecommunication and information services has gone up to $998 million as of 2017. In 2011, the budget was only $670 million.

The reason for this is that the expectations of what technology is needed to communicate with others is changing. As texting becomes the standard, more people are expected to have access to texting services—along with broadband internet and phone calls.

As a result, the budget increases and the state of California is looking for ways to increase revenue to these Public Purpose Programs.

There are a lot of arguments against the proposed tax. For one, messaging apps such as Apple iMessage and Facebook Messenger wouldn’t be subjected to the fee. It would only apply to texts sent through each resident’s wireless carrier such as AT&T, Verizon and many more.

The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, which represents the U.S. wireless communications industry, makes the argument that it’s “harmful” to implement a law that can’t be applied to all messaging services.

“Subjecting wireless carriers’ text messaging traffic to surcharges that cannot be applied to the lion’s share of messaging traffic and messaging providers is illogical, anticompetitive and harmful to consumers,” the CTIA said in their filings.

The proposed tax is still up for debate, with California scheduled to make their decision a month from now.

HeadCount reveals which tours registered the most voters https://www.altpress.com/headcount-tour-most-voter-registration/ Thu, 13 Dec 2018 01:35:04 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/headcount-tour-most-voter-registration/ HeadCount is a nonpartisan organization that works with musicians to register fans to vote at concerts and music festivals. As the year comes to a close, HeadCount revealed which tours registered the most voters.

Voting was a hot topic during 2018, with the midterm elections taking place in November. Before the midterm election, only 30 percent of millennials were expected to vote. Artists such as Paramore partnered with HeadCount to register fans to vote during their summer tour.

“We’re partnering with HeadCount to give people a chance to register to vote before midterm elections,” singer Hayley Williams said in a statement at the time. “They’ll be at the shows all summer, and we’d like to encourage young people coming out to take this chance to make their presence known and their convictions noted.”

HeadCount also partnered with Warped Tour and Lollapalooza along with 40 different music festivals to register as many people as possible before the midterm elections in November.

When going over their end of the year stats, HeadCount revealed that Vans Warped Tour came in at No. 1, with 3,551 people registered. Next were Panic! At The Disco with 1,015 registered voters.

Beyonce and Jay-Z’s tour also made the top 10, as well as artists such as G-Eazy, Cake and the Decemberists. A full list of the top 10 tours that registered the most voters can be seen below.

Other ways voter registration was encouraged

Several musicians such as Taylor Swift encouraged their fans to register and vote leading into the elections. Swift even went as far to endorse a candidate in her home state of Tennessee, breaking her long-held political silence. After her post? Voter registration increased by 65,000 a day later.

In addition, the #iVoted initiative partnered with artists to offer more than 100 free concerts in the U.S. Artists included Good Charlotte, Like Pacific, boygenius and more. To enter the contest, fans had to take a picture at their polling place or with their sticker proving their voted then tagging @ivoted concerts on Instagram.

Just a week before the election, a poll from Harvard University Institute of Politics said that around 40 percent of millennials were planning to vote.

Nine Shrines question religion in new song “Ringworm”—listen https://www.altpress.com/nine-shrines-ringworm-new-song/ Wed, 12 Dec 2018 20:55:03 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/nine-shrines-ringworm-new-song/ Nine Shrines are giving you another taste from their debut album with their new song “Ringworm,” premiering exclusively with AP.

“Ringworm” features intricate guitars, heavy vocals and melodic choruses. It’s the first single off the band’s forthcoming album, Retribution Therapy, which will be out sometime in 2019 via Mascot Label Group.

Colorful lyrics address religion and throw in metaphors more than once. Paired with strong vocals, “Ringworm” packs quite a punch.

“‘Ringworm’ is a song specifically about the abuse of power in religious institutions,” frontman Chris Parketny says. “I was born and raised Catholic and went to Catholic school most of my life. I often find myself questioning the legitimacy of these leaders.”

While “Ringworm” criticizes religions, Parketny is quick to say that the song is not anti-religion. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Instead of being anti-religion, Parketny explains that the song is more about a specific kind of religious person.

“This song is not to be confused with anti-religion,” Parketny says. “The problem lies not with the infallibility of God, but the fallibility of men who speak on his behalf.”

Nine Shrines were founded by former Attack Attack! drummer Andrew Wetzel and features Life On Repeat guitarist Andrew Baylis. Other members include bassist Devon Voisine and guitarist Evan McKeever alongside frontman Parketny.

For Retribution Therapy, Nine Shrines brought on Dan Korneff (My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach, Breaking Benjamin) to help mix and produce the album. Preorders for Retribution Therapy are expected to go live sometime in early 2019.

Read more: Tom DeLonge’s “science fiction Disney” series lands at TBS

Strange Times, the sci-fi book collection and multimedia concern from former blink-182 member and current To The Stars Media head Tom DeLonge, is now in development as a series with television network TBS, as reported by Variety. “We hope to create something that could be described as sort of a ‘science fiction Disney,’” says DeLonge.

The upcoming series will be written and executive produced by Aaron Karo. DeLonge will also executive produce, along with Russell Binder of Strike Entertainment and Stan Spry and Jeff Holland of management and production firm The Cartel.

“This is a dream I’ve had for over 10 years,” DeLonge shares, “and it’s finally a reality. All the stories and themes I work on are meant to be shared through multiple mediums and on different platforms—film, TV, books, music and so on.”

Strange Times was birthed as a graphic novel following DeLonge’s split with blink and his widely-reported foray into ufology. Later, it was reported that the work was being turned into a motion picture screenplay by the former musician.

And it looks like the series will possibly hark back to DeLonge’s signature sophomoric humor in blink. Per the creative, the show will combine elements of comedy with his ongoing interests in the otherworldly and extraterrestrial.

“My love for all things paranormal and skateboarding are sometimes only superseded by my love for offensive humor,” DeLonge says in an associated press release for the imminent new program. “This series combines them all into one.”

“Tom is a storyteller,” offers executive producer Binder. “His experiences and his interests are vast, and his desire to share those with a broad and diverse audience is an itch we are beginning to scratch. Strange Times is a comedic take on the tropes of coming of age, friendship, and how to escalate ways to humiliate your best friends while staying out of detention, and ideally, the hospital.”

Are you excited to watch a new TBS Strange Times series from Tom DeLonge? Did you pick up the graphic novel from the one-time blink-182 member when it first dropped? Sound off in the comments section, below, and let us know what you think!

15 Spotify genres you probably didn’t know existed https://www.altpress.com/spotify-genres-list/ Tue, 11 Dec 2018 20:55:01 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/spotify-genres-list/ Did you know that Spotify has more than 2,000 genres in its backend? Did you even know that many existed?

Spotify data alchemist Glenn McDonald creates the genres by using an intricate science system we can’t even begin to understand. All of these genres—and the ones that have been created since then—are charted on Every Noise At Once.

Read more: twenty one pilots’ ‘Trench’ didn’t get a Grammy nomination, here’s why

In June 2018, Spotify had 1,742 genres. As of Dec. 10, Spotify has 2,424 different genres.

As the streaming site’s data alchemist, he translates numbers into “musical experiences.” Because McDonald uses science to chart and even create new genres, we have features such as Related Artists and even the Daily Mix playlists.

There’s many different reasons to use the Every Noise map. We’ve used it to find 15 genres that you might enjoy based on the music you probably already listen to—check it out below.

Pixie

Artists classified as this genre: Paramore, Waterparks, Andy Black, Jule Vera, Escape The Fate

This genre is filled with pop punk and scene familiars. The music sounds bright, poppy and has an immense amount of energy. The pixie genre is just a few coordinates away from the pop-emo genre on Every Noise.

Trancecore

Artists classified as this genre: Crown The Empire, We Came As Romans, Asking Alexandria, the Word Alive, Attack Attack!

The sound is the name: a combination of hardcore and trance. Even though it’s filled with some of our favorite bands, we still had no idea this genre existed. But we’re here for this genre, with its rhythmic tones and melodic screams.

Nintendocore

Artists classified as this genre: I See Stars, Enter Shikari, I Fight Dragons, Crystal Castles, Anamanaguchi

Technical, almost EDM video game style music blends with your favorite hardcore sound in this intriguing genre. Most of the time, we’re not purposely listening for that technical repetition in our hardcore music. In this case, we’re glad it exists for this interesting genre.

Orgcore

Artists classified as this genre: The Bombpops, Against Me!, the Menzingers, Propagandhi, Hot Water Music, the Flatliners

We don’t know how this genre got its name. Its heavier mixture of music is combined with harmonized vocals. The instrumentals and vocals unite into a solid foundation of heavier music. Just one notch away from melodic hardcore, orgcore is a genre you might enjoy.

Indie poptimism

Artists classified as this genre: Halsey, Walk The Moon, Kim Petras, Night Riots, Hayley Kiyoko

Music in this indie-pop sub-genre tends to make people feel happy, bright and optimistic. Maybe it’s the upbeat tempos or the lyrics. There’s just something infectiously optimistic about these indie-pop artists.

Permanent wave

Artists classified as this genre: Green Day, the Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Muse

Wave was very popular in the ’80s. It helped lead into the punk acts we know and love today. But permanent wave is its own genre with a massive variety of artists who encapsulate that sound and apparently are going to do it forever.

Melodic Metalcore

Artists classified as this genre: Bring Me The Horizon, While She Sleeps, In This Moment, Counterparts, Born Of Osiris

Softer melodies combine with metalcore instrumentals to create this genre. You get the best of both worlds with melodic metalcore. This genre is just a few charts away from alternative rock and screamo on the Every Noise chart.

Rap metal

Artists classified as this genre: Linkin Park, Hollywood Undead, Faith No More, Bodycount, Sevendust

Rap metal is a genre that’s been around for a while, but there’s a constant stream of artists adding to it. The genre’s sound is in the name: rap beats combined with metal guitars.

Escape room

Artists classified as this genre: Grimes, K.Flay, FKA twigs, M.I.A., Poppy

Escape room is a genre that’s hard to describe. If you’ve listened to any of the artists listed here, you might have had trouble describing them, too. It’s almost like indie combined with trance, with an addition of interesting lyrics.

Candy pop

Artists classified as this genre: The Pretty Reckless, Avril Lavigne, New Years Day, We Are The In Crowd, Tonight Alive

Similar to indie-poptimism, the bubblegum nature of this genre can’t be ignored. What gives this genre its attractive bubblegum nature though are elements of pop punk mixed with traditional pop.

Anthem emo

Artists classified as this genre: The Story So Far, WSTR, Neck Deep, Hot Mulligan, Like Pacific

Odds are you might listen to a lot of this music already. But anthem emo with its live sound and rough vocals is such a wonderful subgenre of emo that we couldn’t let it be ignored.

Protopunk

Artists classified as this genre: The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, the Who, Iggy Pop, the Kinks

This protopunk genre spans across decades. Basically, all of these artists combined left the trace elements of what would turn into punk. To hear where it all started, this is a good genre to investigate.

LGBTQ+ hip-hop

Artists classified as this genre: Lil Peep, Frank Ocean, Azealia Banks, ILoveMakonnen, Angel Haze, Taylor Bennett

There’s a whole genre dedicated to artists who are either in or supportive of the LGBT community. Really, that’s all that needs to be said for us to get behind this genre.

Conscious hip-hop

Artists classified as this genre: Rage Against The Machine, Kendrick Lamar, Chance The Rapper, Logic, Prophets Of Rage

Conscious hip-hop is music with a message. We appreciate these bands and artists who take the time to put statements in their songs. That’s common for many genres, but this one gives a hip-hop spin to it.

Post-teen pop

Artists classified as this genre: All Time Low, 5 Seconds Of Summer, 3OH!3, the Maine, Ariana Grande

This weird mash-up of artists seems to be named after its audience than the musicians. However, we can’t deny that these artists create pop that appeals to post-teens. With their smooth pop-rock sounds and infusion of genres, this is one that we’ll keep coming back to.
