By day, she works as a barista, but at night she lives a double life. She goes out to bars and pretends to be incoherently drunk until a man offers to take her home. She then warns the man of the consequences his non-consensual actions will lead to, hoping the encounter will change his behavior of preying on vulnerable women.

For Mulligan, this marks her second nomination in this category and fourth overall at the SAG Awards. In 2010, she was recognized for this award for her performance in An Education. However, Sandra Bullock went on to win for The Blind Side.

Along with this category, Mulligan has been nominated twice for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The cast for An Education was up for the award in 2010, but lost to the Quentin Tarantino-directed Inglourious Basterds. As well, she was recognized alongside the cast of Mudbound in 2018, but the award was given to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

This year, Mulligan has earned a slew of nominations for her role as Cassandra in Promising Young Woman. She was up for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes but lost to Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Throughout the film, Martha tries to come to terms with what happened while everything around her shifts. Feeling isolated from the event, Martha’s marriage begins to fall apart as she searches for answers regarding her baby’s death.

For Kirby, this marks her first solo acting nomination at the SAG Awards. Previously, she was recognized for her portrayal of Princess Margaret alongside the cast of The Crown. The Netflix series earned nominations in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series category in both 2017 and 2018. Amy Adams

Hillbilly Elegy is based on the telling memoir of the same name by J.D. Vance. The film follows Vance (Gabriel Basso) as he returns home from law school to find his mom Bev (Adams) worse off than ever before. With Bev on the brink of homelessness and addicted to drugs, Vance reflects back on his turbulent childhood in the suburbs of Ohio.

Last year, Adams revealed to NME why she decided to take on the role of Bev in Hillbilly Elegy. For her, the real-life story of the Vance family is relatable to anyone who watches the film.

“I think the themes of this movie are very universal,” Adams tells NME. “Whether it be generational trauma [or] it be just examining where we come from to understand where we’re going and who we are. I think the universality of the themes of the movie far transcends politics.”

Hillbilly Elegy is streaming on Netflix and the trailer is available to watch below.

Frances McDormand

In Nomadland, Fern (McDormand) is longing for a life that has been taken from her. After her husband dies and the gypsum plant that employed her closes, Fern finds herself hitting the open road. While living in a van, she explores the American West and searches for new meaning in life. The serene film tackles the misconceptions of homelessness and nomadic life while showcasing the beauty the road less traveled has to offer.

This marks McDormand’s eighth nomination at the SAG Awards. Previously, she won this category for Fargo in 1997 and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2018. The actors in the latter film also took home Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture that year. Helena Zengel

News Of The World follows Captain Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks), a Civil War veteran who agrees to deliver a girl named Johanna Leonberger (Zengel) to her blood relatives after she was taken by the Kiowa people years prior. Leonberger is reluctant to go and spends the long journey across the United States fighting with Kidd. However, after facing grave dangers as they travel hundreds of miles, Kidd and Leonberger find themselves searching for a place they can both call home.

At just 12-years-old, Zengel is one of the youngest Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role nominees. Currently, Dakota Fanning holds the record who was just seven when she was nominated for 2001’s I Am Sam. Along with this nomination, News Of The World is also up for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

Although this is Zengel’s first-ever SAG Award nomination, the young German actress has already won some prestigious awards. Last year, she won Best Leading Actress at the German Film Award, Germany’s equivalent of the Oscars, for her role in System Crasher.

Jared Leto

So far, 2021 has been quite a year for Leto and his return to cinema. It’s been three years since the Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman starred in his last film The Outsider. However, he has certainly stayed busy these past few years on other projects.

In 2018, Thirty Seconds To Mars released their latest full-length AMERICA which features collabs with Hasley and A$AP Rocky. The 12-track LP, which was co-produced by Zedd, earned the band their highest chart debut when it entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2. Odom Jr.’s portrayal of Cooke has already earned him a slew of other nominations this year. He was up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture at the Golden Globes but lost to Kaluuya for Judas And The Black Messiah. “Speak Now,” his song with Sam Ashworth that’s featured in One Night In Miami, was nominated for Best Original Song – Motion Picture. Last month, the film’s stunt coordinator Rob Inch opened up about how long it took to plan that iconic opening scene. As it turns out, Inch pulled inspiration from X Games when it came to coordinating the dynamic sequence.

“We probably spent four to five months in prep,” Inch tells SyFy. “I remember going on YouTube and looking at X Games and Red Bull athletes and going, ‘How can we use that piece? How can we stretch it?’ So like the run-up-the-wall back-flip, we turned that into a run-up-the-wall back-flip with a high jump in it. We also had input on how that stadium was designed for the start of the obstacle race. I needed steps for these girls to run out. We needed poles for them to flip. Those things were not a proxy set. They were built at the actual heights like up to 15 meters.”

Over the years, four superhero films have won Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture. The Dark Knight took home the award in 2009. As well, DC and Marvel films have won the category for the past three consecutive years. Wonder Woman won in 2018 followed by Black Panther in 2019 and Avengers: Endgame in 2020.

From hidden landmines to exploding grenades and aggressive gunfire, Da 5 Bloods features numerous dangerous stunts.

The film also has frequent flashbacks to the Vietnam War including various battle scenes with Commander Norman Earl “Stormin’ Norman” Holloway (Chadwick Boseman). Since 2008, when the Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture category was created, three war films have won the award. In 2014, the Mark Wahlberg-led movie Lone Survivor won followed by the Angelina Jolie-directed Unbroken in 2015. More recently, the Mel Gibson-directed Hacksaw Ridge, which stars Andrew Garfield, took home the award in 2017.

Mulan

The live-action Mulan follows Hua Mulan, a fearless woman who saves her father by serving in the Imperial Army in China. In order to do so, she hides her identity and disguises herself as a man.

The film features numerous war sequences with hundreds of actors and stunt performers. Along with martial arts and sword fighting, Mulan also includes an extensive amount of violent choreographed battles. According to the movie’s cinematographer Mandy Walker, they didn’t rely on CGI to make the massive war scenes realistic.

“We had 60 horses and 100 people for each side of the battle,” Walker tells Insider. “So we had it for real. I think you can really tell in the movie that it’s not just extensions or CGI.”

Walker also revealed that Mulan star Yifei Liu actually performed most of her own stunts in the live-action remake.

“Liu Yifei is incredible,” Walker tells Insider. “Apart from being a lovely person, she’s very professional. She did pretty much most of the stunt work herself—the horse riding, the sword fighting, the martial arts, the battle sequences, the stunts. We always had a stunt person there, but she trained as well and we would try it with her and, nine times out of 10, she did it.”

Last year, Ashlee Fidow, the stunt double for Liu, opened up about one of the most challenging moments on the set of the film.

“It involved me doing a brief hold underwater,” Fidow tells Sphera. “So I had the full costume on. I had the heavy cape. I had the armor, the little boots. [I] even had a sword in my hand while I was doing the sequence… It was pretty cool to do. The build-up to it because there was a dive team that they had there to specialize in the water stunt. I spent a bit of time training with them and doing scuba diving training. Then, freediving training to build up to do the scene.”

Mulan is available to watch on Disney+.

News Of The World

News Of The World follows Civil War veteran Captain Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) who spends his time traveling to different towns reading news from around the world. Throughout Kidd and Leonberger’s journey to find her family, they come across numerous enemies who are trying to kidnap her. As a result, the western film is filled with tense shootouts, skilled horse chases and carriage crashes.

Over the years, no western film has ever won Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture. However, two other movies have earned nominations. Cowboys & Aliens was up for the award in 2012 but lost to Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2. More recently, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was nominated in 2019, but lost to Black Panther.

News Of The World’s nomination at the SAG Awards has made history in another way, too. Zengel is up for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, marking only the third time a western is competing in multiple categories at the awards show.

Previously, No Country For Old Men was nominated in two categories in 2008. Javier Bardem went on to win Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for the film. Meanwhile, True Grit also earned two nominations in 2011 but didn’t take home any awards.

The Trial Of The Chicago 7

The Aaron Sorkin-directed Trial Of The Chicago 7 follows the Chicago Seven, a group of anti-Vietnam War activists who were put on trial in the ’60s. The group was charged with conspiracy and intention of starting riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

The film includes numerous scenes of protestors clashing with police. Hundreds of actors and stunt performers were needed to re-enact these moments that happened during the era of unrest. From protestors being bloodied with police batons to being pushed through windows and attacked with tear gas, The Trial Of The Chicago 7 is more than just a courtroom drama. With the help of the stunt ensemble, the film is able to convey the tense rift between law officers and the mass group of protestors in the 1960s.

SAG Awards announce 2021 winners—see the full list here https://www.altpress.com/sag-awards-2021-winners-full-list/ Mon, 05 Apr 2021 04:00:05 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/sag-awards-2021-winners-full-list/ Like many awards shows over the past year, the 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are opting for a virtual event to announce the 2021 winners amid the coronavirus pandemic. With a shortened one-hour ceremony, the SAG Awards air April 4 at 9 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS.

While the event is typically held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles—the iconic venue where My Chemical Romance also made their triumphant return in 2019—this year’s ceremony will be pre-taped without an official host. Instead, several actors will appear during the presentation including Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs who both announced the nominees on Instagram in February.

Unlike other awards shows, the SAG Awards are voted on by peers who are part of SAG-AFTRA, a labor union that represents more than 160,000 actors, dancers, DJs, singers, stunt performers and voiceover artists among others.

The annual process begins with the SAG Awards Motion Picture and Television Nominating Committees, which consists of 2,500 randomly drawn active SAG-AFTRA members. Following a review of the submissions, active SAG-AFTRA members are able to vote on the final nominees in 15 categories honoring film and television.

In addition to the abbreviated and pre-taped virtual ceremony, SAG-AFTRA has also scrapped the Lifetime Achievement Award this year. First awarded in 1962 to comedian Eddie Cantor, the honor predates the annual ceremony, which did not begin until 1995. Over the years, the award has been presented to Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Debbie Reynolds and more.

Ahead of the main event this year, People, Entertainment Weekly & TNT: Screen Actors Guild Awards Pre-Show is airing at 8 p.m. ET where the stunt category winners will be revealed. Disney’s Mulan and DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 are making history in the motion picture category as this marks the first year two female-led films have been nominated for stunts.

The blockbuster films are not alone in this record-breaking year as the late Chadwick Boseman has become the first person to be nominated four times in the film categories in one year. The beloved Marvel star has been recognized for his roles in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods, earning nominations for his leading role and supporting role respectively. Both movies are also nominated in Outstanding Performance by Cast in a Motion Picture.

Boseman is nominated alongside Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman and Steven Yeun in the leading actor category. Ahmed’s nomination for his role as Ruben Stone in Sound Of Metalthe story of a metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing—marks his second at the SAG Awards.
