Whether they’re referencing the comics or connecting current films to past ones, it’s clear that everything Marvel does is intentional. Their latest cinematic release Black Widow is no different, with numerous Easter eggs strategically planted throughout the film.

We’ve picked 11 of our favorites that connect this spy thriller to its MCU counterparts while also hinting at things to come.

This isn’t the first time Dreykov’s daughter has been mentioned

Black Widow isn’t the first time Dreykov’s daughter is mentioned in the MCU. As avid fans may recall, Loki mentions her during the first Avengers film while berating Natasha Romanoff about the red on her ledger. At the time, only those familiar with the comics may have understood the reference. Now that we’ve had a glimpse at Natasha’s past, we can watch that scene with new knowledge of an early Easter egg.

“American Pie” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” were intentional tracks

Sure, Marvel could have thrown just about any track they wanted into the opening scene of the film, but if there’s one thing we know about Marvel, nothing is accidental. Yelena Belova’s favorite song, “American Pie,” plays over images of the “death” of Natasha’s American dream. It’s pretty fitting considering the track was written in the wake of JFK’s death. “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” an anthem of self-expression and defiance, plays during the opening credits. It showcases everything being conditioned out of the Widows during their time in the Red Room.

“The great bear” (X-Men)

Remember that prisoner the Red Guardian was arm-wrestling and he ended up breaking his arm? You may recall that Alexei Shostakov calls the prisoner “Ursa” and refers to him as “the great bear.” The actor playing this prisoner confirmed that he is indeed Ursa Major—a mutant with the ability to turn into a bear. Could this be a hint that the X-Men will play a future part in the MCU?

Yelena’s knife trick looks awfully familiar

Eagle-eyed fans quickly took note that Yelena’s knife trick looked familiar—and it should. During Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we see Bucky Barnes (aka Winter Soldier) do the exact same knife trick. This could suggest that the comics hold true in which the Winter Soldier was brought in to train the Widows in the Red Room.

The white suits

In true Marvel fashion, there were several comic nods placed throughout the film, one of those being the first appearance of the white Black Widow suits. The suits first made their appearance in the comic Black Widow: Deadly Origin, where many of her fights took place in Russia—and snow. The suits were designed to camouflage the Widows in the snow much easier than their typical black ones. The first time we see Natasha and Yelena in these suits is during the prison-break scene, where they’re surrounded by snow.

Iron Maiden’s mask

Marvel superfans were quick to spot this subtle Easter egg that first appeared in one of the film’s trailers when Melina says, “You won’t win.” Melina is indeed a character in the comics, but her moniker is Iron Maiden, who becomes a foe of Black Widow. During one of the scenes with Natasha and Melina, a mask can be seen on the wall behind them. It’s one that looks awfully similar to that of Iron Maiden. Is this just a subtle nod to the comics or a hint at twists to come?

WHiH World News

During the opening credits, we see a news broadcast from WHiH25—what we can assume is an affiliate of WHiH World News. This news channel was created by Marvel and has appeared in numerous MCU films and TV shows. They’ve “reported” on the devastation in Sokovia, Tony Stark’s reveal as Iron Man, the crater left by Thor’s arrival on Earth and more.

Setup for Red Hulk and the Thunderbolts

During Captain America: Civil War, we learn that Thaddeus Ross suffered a heart attack that required surgery. When we see him again in Black Widow, it looks like he’s still recovering while walking with a cane. Many fans believe the theory that his condition could get worse, forcing him to seek out experimental measures that may eventually turn him into the Red Hulk—just like in the comics. This fan theory also coincides with the idea that Marvel may be setting up the Thunderbolts, which has included Red Hulk, Yelena, Hawkeye, Taskmaster, Ghost, Baron Zemo and John Walker.

“Thank you for your cooperation”

During the showdown with Dreykov in the movie’s final act, we see Nat using a similar tactic she once used against Loki to get Dreykov to tell her everything she needs to know about the Black Widow Program. Acting on that Avengers callback, Nat uses the same tagline she said to the God of Mischief: “Thank you for your cooperation.”

Natasha’s alias

One of Nat’s aliases given to her by Mason includes the name “Fanny Longbottom.” While it made viewers chuckle at the time, those laughs later turned to tears as we realize that Yelena’s dog is named Fanny in the post-credits scene.

Moonraker

During a night off, Natasha watches the James Bond film Moonraker, one that she’s evidently seen enough to be able to recite it line for line. While the obvious spy connection is there, it also foreshadows the Red Room being hidden high in the sky. Bond also jumps from a plane without a parachute in the film, something that Nat ends up doing in Black Widow.

11 upcoming Marvel Phase 4 and 5 movies that we can’t wait to see https://www.altpress.com/upcoming-marvel-movies-phase-4-and-5/ Mon, 05 Jul 2021 23:55:51 +0000 Marvel gave us over a decade’s worth of incredible films during the first three phases, which came to be called the Infinity Saga.

Fans were left wondering how the next era could compete. When President Kevin Feige revealed the next two phases, the anxiety quickly switched over to anticipation. With the introduction of multiple series across Disney+ and the first official Phase 4 film, Black Widow, just around the corner, we can’t help but think of the movies we’re ecstatic to see enter the MCU.

Check out 11 Phase 4 and 5 releases we’re ready for below!

Black Widow

Release date: July 9, 2021

After being involved in the MCU for a decade, Black Widow is finally getting the solo film she deserves. Up until now, fans have only seen a small portion of Natasha Romanoff’s time in the “Red Room,” knowing that she has “red on [her] ledger” but not knowing exactly what that entails. We cannot wait to see this iconic character’s background and gain all-new insight into the mind of one of our favorite Avengers. This film is also rumored to set up Yelena Belova as the MCU’s next Black Widow, while introducing the mysterious copycat villain, Taskmaster.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

Release date: Sept. 3, 2021

Fans were elated upon the reveal that Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings would become a part of Marvel’s Phase 4. This also serves as the studio’s first film with an Asian lead. The cast announcement divulged the movie’s connection to the Mandarin and his Ten Rings organization, which have appeared throughout the MCU. You may recall the terrorist group making appearances in Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Ant-Man (watching a deleted scene makes the connection more evident).

Between the killer song used in the trailer, incredible fight choreography and backstory, we can’t wait to see how Shang-Chi creates its own legendary spot in the MCU.

Eternals

Release date: Nov. 5, 2021

While the official trailer for this film left us eager for more, it also left fans with many plaguing questions. The movie will introduce the Eternals as immortals who come out of hiding to protect humanity from their evil counterparts—the Deviants. So why didn’t the Eternals interfere when Thanos wiped out half of the world? How will these immortals tie into the larger aspects of the MCU outside of the Avengers? Hopefully, we will learn all the answers in November.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Release date: Dec. 17, 2021

After being left on a cliffhanger during Spider-Man 2, we’ve been eagerly awaiting the next web-slinging installment. With the public now aware that their friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is none other than Peter Parker, Marvel will now venture into unexplored territory with this next film.

Our excitement only continues to grow as rumors have continued to circulate (with more evidence as recently as June 28) that former Spider-Man actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will make appearances in the forthcoming film. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this news will be confirmed upon the release of the first teaser trailer.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

Release date: March 25, 2022

Doctor Strange
[Photo via Marvel
The debut of Marvel’s Disney+ series WandaVision set the bar high for forthcoming series while simultaneously leaving us ecstatic for the possibility of the multiverse in all its madness.

While many of us believed Doctor Strange would have a cameo in the series, we were left baffled and wanting more when we caught a glimpse of Wanda being able to astral project herself while reading the Darkhold. Rumors suggest the Scarlet Witch will take on the role of friend-turned-enemy in this film, causing Doctor Strange to unleash an unspeakable evil into the world. Others believe the film will follow closer to the comics, in which Baron Mordo is Strange’s greatest enemy. If only we had the Time Stone to gain a little more insight.

Thor: Love And Thunder

Release date: May 6, 2022

marvel thor

The Thor movies have always found themselves on the more comical side of the MCU. It’s one of the things we absolutely love about the films and can’t wait to see more of. While not a whole lot about the film has been revealed, director Taika Waititi has stated that they would adapt elements from the Mighty Thor comics, in which Jane Foster takes on the mantle of Thor while simultaneously battling cancer. If Marvel is going the comic route with this one, we could be in for one hell of a ride.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Release date: July 8, 2022

marvel black panther

Following the passing of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, fans were left wondering how the films could possibly continue. While nothing has been confirmed, Marvel has stated that they intend to honor Boseman’s legacy by not recasting his role. Many believe T’Challa’s sister Shuri will step up as the next Black Panther to honor her fallen brother. Feige also revealed that the film would take a deeper look into Wakanda and many of the first film’s characters.

The Marvels

Release date: Nov. 11, 2022

the marvels marvel
[Photo via Marvel
Originally known as Captain Marvel 2, The Marvels is set to feature the triple threat of Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau (WandaVision) and Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel). WandaVision did a wonderful job of setting up Rambeau to eventually become Photon/Spectrum, on par with the comics. The film is rumored to be a continuation of the Ms. Marvel series, so it will be interesting to see how that Disney+ series sets things up.

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania

Release date: Feb. 17, 2023

Like Thor, the Ant-Man movies have always done a phenomenal job at keeping things on the lighter side without losing any of the plot’s serious points. So far, fans have only dipped their toes into the vastness of the quantum realm. So, it will be interesting to see how this film further explores that space. Marvel has done a wonderful job at keeping the details for this one under wraps, but fans are excited to see Kang the Conqueror come into play.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Release date: May 23, 2023

Pro-wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista has already said that he won’t be reprising his role as Drax following this film, leaving us to wonder what this movie may hold for the Guardians’ future. The second installment did a great job of setting up cosmic entity Adam Warlock, which is sure to bring more iconic characters into the MCU. With director James Gunn hinting that Vol. 3 will be the last film to feature the Guardians in their current form, we can’t help but wonder what will befall our intergalactic gang by the time the end credits roll.

Blade

Release date: Unconfirmed

Vampires in the MCU? Hell yeah! Thor: Ragnarok originally teased the existence of vampires in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, setting up the Blade reboot long before any of us knew it was coming.

The Easter eggs have continued to pop up—some as recently as episode four of Loki—continuing to plant the vampire seed throughout the MCU. The official release date has yet to be confirmed, but many believe we won’t see it until Phase 5. The original film as well as the comics are dark and bloody, which leaves us to question if Marvel will create the only other R-rated MCU film outside of the acquired Deadpool films.

Their exuberant pop-rock sound is both equally carefree and confident, emphasized by catchy hooks and lyrics that radiate honesty. This is one band we can’t wait to see perform live again. Until then, we’ll have to make due with putting their stellar tracks on repeat.

To Kill A Monster

COVID-19 seemed to put the music industry on hold over the past year, but central Ohio’s To Kill A Monster emerged from quarantine ready to take things to the next level. From working on brand-new music to adding two new members, TKAM rose to the challenge like true rock stars. Joey Lawson’s dynamic vocal range pairs perfectly with group harmonies while simultaneously blurring the lines across a handful of genres in the very best way.

Their 2020 debut album, Saddest Girl At The Party, gives us all the 2000s garage-punk vibes we could ever want. With a Spotify bio that describes themselves as “if the Powerpuff Girls started a blink-182 cover band,” how could you not give them a listen?

Turn Zero

If you love to ride the roller coaster of emotions set to the soundtrack of alternative-rock music, then you’ll want to give Turn Zero a go. With the ability to create everything from honest and moving ballads to energized and passionate hits, these Arizona natives are everything you could want wrapped up in one solid and extremely talented package.

New Saviors

With influences such as Anberlin and Sleeping With Sirens, New Saviors are the perfect blend of catchy tunes and poignant lyrics.

Elbow Room

Fans of Knuckle Puck, Trophy Eyes and Boston Manor are in for a treat with Northeast Ohio’s Elbow Room. Mixing alternative and pop punk, Elbow Room prove they have both the music and the grind to stand out in Cleveland’s music scene. Give their latest EP, Now That You’re Away, a spin and be ready to experience something new with each track.

Finding September

From thrash and funk to heavy metal and pop punk, Finding September’s influences are just as diverse as their sound. Their innovative take on pop punk makes them the tried-and-true definition of genre-bending, and they’re damn good at it, too.

DramaScream

With the ability to go from catchy and upbeat to dark and scary, DramaScream are truly living up to their name. The perfect mashup of hard rock and metal, these small-town musicians are full of explosive energy, in-your-face screams and good old determination. If you’re looking for a fantastic band to rock out to, you just found them.

foreveratlast

After having been silent since the release of 2015’s, Ghosts Again, foreveratlast burst back onto the scene ready to tackle their inner demons in “Holy Ghost.” It’s evident the band used their time off as anything but, showcasing their growth and evolution and erasing all doubts that this band are here to stay.

Takers Leavers

15 artists who would perfectly soundtrack Marvel’s Phases 4 and 5 https://www.altpress.com/artists-who-should-soundtrack-marvel-phase-4-phase-5/ Wed, 09 Jun 2021 15:55:40 +0000 From the rock anthems that followed us through Iron Man to the timeless classics we danced to with Baby Groot in Guardians Of The Galaxy, Marvel has given us incredible soundtracks to coincide with their phenomenal movies. However, with the next phase of the MCU underway, we couldn’t help but think about how things could be a tiny bit better if some bands and artists from our scene were recruited for the next era.

Check out who we’d like to see soundtrack some of Marvel’s Phase 4 and 5 releases below.

Read more: 37 musicians who exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Waterparks – Loki

Marvel has many incredible and highly anticipated shows heading to Disney+ over the course of Phase 4 and 5. Following the ever-impressive WandaVision and action-packed The Falcon And The Winter Soldier series, Loki will debut June 9, with new episodes releasing every Wednesday. There’s no one better to soundtrack the God of Mischief than Alternative Press’ May cover stars, Waterparks

Halestorm – Black Widow

Fans have been anxiously awaiting a Black Widow solo film ever since she entered the MCU franchise during Iron Man 2. Now, despite several release date pushbacks, the premiere is just around the corner. With a villain whose actor has yet to be officially revealed (got to love those Marvel secrets), there are high expectations riding on this long-awaited film. The only way it could possibly get any better would be to add Halestorm to the soundtrack. After all, badass women have to stick together.

New Found Glory – Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

The first two Guardians Of The Galaxy films really set the bar high in regards to Marvel soundtracks, bringing in timeless classics that everyone can enjoy. Obviously, we’d expect nothing different from the third volume. However, adding a bit of timeless pop punk to the mix would definitely take things to the next level. We don’t know about you, but we can definitely picture Star-Lord rocking out to New Found Glory’s “My Friends Over You.”

STARSET – Eternals

A band whose entire fictional backstory centers around astronomy and space, STARSET are the obvious choice to soundtrack the forthcoming MCU film Eternals. After all, the band released their own graphic novel produced by Marvel Comics in 2017. It seems that adding them to a Marvel film soundtrack would be the next logical step.

remy – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

There are many questions stemming from the forthcoming film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. After Chadwick Boseman’s heartbreaking death, many are wondering who will take the Black Panther mantle. The film is sure to be overwhelming and extremely emotional. Who better to embody those feelings than Hopeless Records’ latest signee, remy?

Marianas Trench – Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

Marianas Trench fans know the theatrics and incredible masterpieces this band are capable of. From Astoria to Phantoms, Marianas Trench are able to create totally immersive worlds for listeners to enjoy. If we’re going to enter multiple universes during this next Doctor Strange film, we’d love nothing more than for Marianas Trench to get us there.

Meet Me @ The Altar – Hawkeye

The forthcoming Disney+ miniseries Hawkeye is slated for release toward the end of this year. It’s even rumored to take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The series is expected to introduce Clint Barton’s so-called protege Kate Bishop, so obviously, the soundtrack needs to match the introduction of another badass female superhero. Cue Meet Me @ The Altar.

HALLIE – Ironheart

In Ironheart, super-intelligent teenage tech prodigy Riri Williams will step into the MCU as a type of next-gen Iron Man. Paying ode to the original movies, this soundtrack needs to exude badass confidence. Up-and-coming songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist HALLIE is well suited to take the reins. Her catchy hooks and attention-grabbing lyrics would be a perfect soundtrack addition to this Disney+ series.

BABYMETAL – Thor: Love And Thunder

If you ask us, the Thor films have some of the most underrated soundtracks. This Marvel series in particular offers epic fight scenes as well as some incredibly emotional moments. Talk about your highest highs and your lowest lows. We expect nothing less with this next installment, so imagine a next-level fight scene soundtracked by BABYMETAL. It would add that extra bit of thunder to Thor: Love And Thunder

My Chemical Romance – Blade

OK, hear us out. Marvel surprised fans during 2019’s SDCC by giving us a glimpse at what’s beyond Phase 4. One movie announcement that genuinely shocked fans in the best way: Blade. Not much is known about the movie’s details other than it will introduce the day-walking, half-vampire into the MCU. If Marvel is going to give us a movie about a vampire and they don’t include My Chemical Romance, then they will have seriously missed out on an epic opportunity.

YUNGBLUD – Spider-Man: No Way Home

The most relatable (and lovable) thing about Marvel’s Spider-Man is that he’s still your typical high schooler dealing with everyday teen problems. At the same time, he’s in a position to lead his generation and fight for something bigger than himself, much like YUNGBLUD, who’s inspiring his fans to change the world. Adding YUNGBLUD to the Spider-Man: No Way Home soundtrack would solidify everything these icons stand for.

Conquer Divide – The Marvels

Originally announced as Captain Marvel 2, the second installment has now snagged the official title of The Marvels. It’s believed to be a continuation of the forthcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel and a sequel to Captain Marvel. Featuring Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), this female powerhouse film requires an equally powerful soundtrack. We can’t think of anyone better to lead the soundtrack than Conquer Divide, who are known for their intense and anthemic songs.

Fall Out Boy – Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania

The fact that the official title for Ant-Man 3 sounds like a Fall Out Boy song title is just one of many reasons the band should be featured on the film’s soundtrack. After all, Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is a mouthful. If that’s not enough for you, the film’s working title is Dust Bunny, which we firmly believe could also pass as a FOB song or album title.

Against The Current – Fantastic Four

With previous Fantastic Four movies coming up short, fans are a bit wary of how this Phase 5 film will pan out. However, Marvel has been on a roll with mind-blowing movies, keeping that glimmer of hope alive in us all. To cement that hope, Marvel should really consider pulling in Against The Current for the film’s soundtrack. They already have the experience of creating “Legends Never Die” for the 2017 League Of Legends World Championship. Why not add a Marvel movie soundtrack to their list of accomplishments?

Halsey – Ms. Marvel

From encouraging self-confidence and empowerment to sticking up and speaking out for those who need it most, Halsey is practically a real-life superhero. So who better to bring the Ms. Marvel soundtrack to life than her? The forthcoming Disney+ series is scheduled to debut later this year. It’s also rumored to consist of six episodes while setting up fans for The Marvels.

remy makes music for all the people who don’t fit in anywhere else https://www.altpress.com/remy-hopeless-records-debut/ Wed, 26 May 2021 21:15:17 +0000 Add a dash of Fall Out Boy, a sprinkle of Drake, a pinch of the 1975 and a hint of Kanye West and you’ll end up with a sound that’s nearly impossible to replicate. The mastermind behind this fool-proof recipe is none other than Hopeless Records latest addition to their stacked roster—a singer-songwriter who was practically born with music in his blood. Throughout 2019 and 2020, remy introduced the world to his unique approach to songwriting through several singles, including his debut, “useless,” highlighting his seamless blend of countless influences. Reaching fans of all walks of life who resonate with his emo roots, remy is developing a new form of musical outreach and connection.

After years of writing Top 40 records, the New York native turned his songwriting frustration into fruition by creating something all his own. With basslines similar to blink-182, hard-hitting drums, pop hooks, alternative roots and a lo-fi aesthetic, remy strives to write music that people can see themselves in. His latest single, “i know why you stay out,” marks his first release under Hopeless Records—but it certainly won’t be his last.

Alternative Press chatted with remy for the May 2021 issue ahead of the release. You can watch the full video for “i know why you stay out” and read the exclusive interview below.

What inspired you to get started in the music industry?

My family has always been musical. My dad’s a musician, so it’s always been a big part of my life, and it just became an important part of everything I do. I’m not really into sports. I’m not really athletic. So I think the thing for me was always that I knew I could really do well with music. I was constantly excited by it. I’ve turned to [it] since I was really little.

You started out writing songs for other people first, correct?

I’ve been a songwriter “professionally” my whole life. On paper, it’s been my living since mid-2017. I’ve done songs for the Chainsmokers and AJ Mitchell. I just recently worked with my friend Alexander 23, which is really cool. I’m very fortunate to be able to do that as a living.

What made you decide to start writing songs for yourself?

It can get really taxing writing, pitch songs especially. My close collaborator Pat Linehan [is] just a really good friend of mine and an incredible producer. We’ve done every song together. He’s also been doing it forever. Me and my boy Pat usually write these big pop songs and these really safe, pitchy records. I got to his place, and I was like, “Bro, I’m super hungover. I can’t really sing anything crazy. So today’s not a wash, why don’t we do some stuff that’s just for us? Let’s just make some stuff that we would be pumped to show our friends and that our friends would be pumped to show their friends.” I think at the time, Lil Peep and Juice WRLD were just getting started, and we were like, “Holy shit. This is fucking awesome.” We had both grown up on bands like the Starting Line, Motion City Soundtrack, Cartel and Fall Out Boy. But we were so fucking stoked that this sound was bubbling up.

At the time, I guess because I knew we were not going to really send them to anybody or we weren’t pitching them or anything, I wasn’t really worried about what the lyrics were about and not really focusing too much on making sure that it’s super clear. We came up with the first couple of songs and [showed] some friends, and everyone was like, “Holy shit, whatever it is you’ve been working [on] before this, stop. Stop that and do this.” People kept coming back and being like, “This is the best shit.” And it just felt like the gloves were off, and we could just do whatever we wanted. It was just so liberating.

It sounds like the process of writing for someone else, as opposed to doing your own music, is pretty different.

It’s always different every time when you work with somebody who’s really dope. When you’re one on one, it’s a different experience because they’re good artists. They have a direction, and you’re just there. It’s like I can be a part of the palette—I can help sprinkle some new ideas. But when you’re writing a pitch song, you’ve got to send it to your team. They have to like it. You send it to their manager, and they have to like it. You send it to their A&R, [and] they have to like it. Just a lot of opinions when you know if the artist just got to hear it, they would like it. Because that’s usually what happens because creatives resonate that way. That’s why a lot of writers put out their own music. It’s just like, “I don’t want to have to answer to anybody else.” We’ve been fortunate that people agree with our choices this far because it doesn’t always happen. [Laughs.]

You’re writing about honest, real-life experiences, and I think that’s fantastic because pop songs nowadays seem really unrealistic with expectations. The fact that you’re not sugarcoating anything in regards to those experiences is what resonates with people, even the older audience like myself who grew up with Cartel, Relient K and all of those bands.

When people ask me, “What does it sound like?” I usually say it’s like if Drake was in the 1975. The difference between hip-hop and alternative music, for me, [is] I always felt like there’s just a lot of ball in rap. Every rapper is fucking cool. But in pop-punk music, the biggest people were fucking losers. [Laughs.] Pete Wentz [was] writing in his journal about not getting laid. People like Weezer and “Buddy Holly.” All these songs are about people who just don’t really fit in, don’t really have it figured out and just aren’t the cool kids. Like I said, I don’t play sports. I fucking watch Marvel movies. I think that’s what I want the music to feel like. That authenticity carries through.

You’ve also signed with Hopeless Records—that’s huge. Congrats!

Thank you so much. We’d been looking for a partner for a long time, and you can tell when somebody is genuine, when somebody actually gives a fuck and actually cares about not only the music but you and wants you to succeed. They were like, “We love what you’re doing, and we don’t want anyone to get in the way—we just want more people to know about it.” It felt like, for me, exactly what we were looking for. And also, it just helps that they’re obviously a dope record [label] with a bunch of incredible new and legacy acts that are fucking sick.

You mentioned Fall Out Boy earlier, and I noticed some of your song titles are really long. Did you pull inspiration from them?

Yeah, of course. From Under The Cork Tree in particular was my gateway drug into the world of alternative music. I went back and listened to all the Fall Out Boy stuff, and it just opened my eyes to so many cool groups. Obviously, Fall Out Boy titles are [famously] long. I was like, “There is no better way to pay tribute to that.”

Stand Atlantic and nothing, nowhere. debut hypnotizing “Deathwish”—watch https://www.altpress.com/stand-atlantic-nothing-nowhere-deathwish/ Fri, 30 Apr 2021 02:06:59 +0000 We’ve all had those moments, especially over this past year, where we feel like we just can’t win no matter what we do. Whether it’s in relationships or life in general, those cynical and sinister feelings can send us into an absolute headspin. Turning the misery into music, pop-punk heavyweights Stand Atlantic have teamed up with emo-rap frontrunner nothing, nowhere. in a captivating collab titled “Deathwish.”

Stand Atlantic dropped their second full-length, Pink Elephant, in August 2020, following it up with their collab on “I’m Sorry” with pop singer/producer MOKITA in November.

Fans have been anxiously awaiting new music from the band, falling into an absolute frenzy as cryptic teasers began popping up on the band’s socials two weeks ago.

Those 15 fans were sent a code that unlocked a website link posted by the band. The link revealed yet another puzzle for fans to piece together.

It didn’t take long for super-sleuthing fans to discover the song’s title and release date. However, one key piece of the puzzle wasn’t revealed until Stand Atlantic dropped a teaser for the track, announcing that it would feature nothing, nowhere.

At last, the wait is finally over! Check out the official music video for “Deathwish” featuring nothing, nowhere. below as well as an exclusive interview from Bonnie Fraser

What made you decide to bring in nothing, nowhere. for “Deathwish”? How did the collab come about?

Originally, it was [David] Potter rapping, so we decided to call a professional instead. nothing, nowhere. is a very talented dude. [I’m] thrilled to have him a part of the track. It just hits.

Can you give readers a rundown on what the song is about/the inspiration behind the track?

Frankly, I died. I was a servant to the opinions of people who didn’t give a fuck about me. My self-worth was so low that I would get high off a glimpse of their approval. I lost myself, and I think the old me had a deathwish all along. But now I’m back and truly have zero fucks left to give.

I absolutely love the clear wall with all the lyrics written on it. Is it full of mostly lyrics, or did you sneak some other things in there?

There are some sneaky bits in there. Some of the lyrics are taken from the original second verse we had before nothing, nowhere. jumped on. We also just added phrases that were related to the concept of the song like the heart filled with the word “end” over and over. It’s reminiscent of [the] death of a person or love or friendship.

What was the biggest hurdle in recording the song and filming the music video?

The song was pretty straightforward, but the video was literally filmed in three separate countries, so coordinating that was a complete stress fest as I’m sure you could imagine.

The “blue paint” coming out of your mouth is a fantastic visual, so I simply have to ask—how was it filming that whole experience?

It was definitely something I’ve never done before, and I wasn’t looking forward to it because I just assumed I’d literally be holding paint in my mouth. But movie magic, baby—it was just corn starch and food dye. Super sweet and I definitely nearly threw up a few times because I’d put too much in my mouth and couldn’t hold it in. [Laughs.]

7 times the Mandela effect popped up in well-known songs https://www.altpress.com/mandela-effect-in-music/ Tue, 13 Apr 2021 21:55:22 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/mandela-effect-in-music/ Imagine yourself singing along to one of your favorite songs, belting out every word at the top of your lungs like you have so many times before when you stumble over a line you don’t remember mixing up before. Maybe you sing “and” instead of “but” or change out a line altogether. Regardless, it leaves you wondering how you could mess up your favorite song after all these years while still feeling confident that there’s no way you could be wrong. You’re not alone. Welcome to the Mandela effect, a phenomenon where a large group of people tends to remember something differently than how it occurred.

The most popular example to circle the internet was the Berenstein Bears incident, where it was randomly revealed that the spelling was actually Berenstain Bears. It threw many people into a frenzy and divided the internet over their childhood memories.

While some conspiracy theorists believe the Mandela effect to be examples of alternate universes, some doctors use it to explain how imperfect our memory can be.

Either way, this crazy phenomenon carries over into our beloved songs. In fact, it often causes arguments and confusion among fans—and sometimes the artists themselves.

Check out seven examples of the Mandela effect in music below!

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts – “I Love Rock ’N Roll”

A familiar track and popular karaoke choice to many, “I Love Rock ’N Roll” is one of those songs that you can’t help but belt out at the top of your lungs. However, after one Reddit user brought up a possible lyric change, chaos broke loose and caused a lot of people to feel like they were losing their minds. It seems that most remember the lyric as “I saw him standing there by the record machine” when the words are actually “I saw him dancing there by the record machine.” The Reddit user also claims that most covers of the Arrows song use “standing,” while all Joan Jett versions contain the word “dancing” to stay faithful to the original.

Panic! At The Disco – “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”

When Panic! At The Disco seemed to fall victim to the Mandela effect a few years ago, fans took to Twitter to try and finally make sense of it all. The debate centered around whether the lyric was “closing a goddamn door” or “closing the goddamn door.” It induced so much chaos that Halsey got involved, tweeting at Brendon Urie and asking him to explain. Urie replied, stating that he couldn’t explain it and compared it to the Berenstein Bears vs. Berenstain Bears Mandela effect.

Queen – “We Are The Champions”

Not even the timeless classic “We Are The Champions” is excluded from the Mandela effect. There are many die-hard fans of the Queen hit who swear the studio track ends with the line “of the world” when it actually closes with “We are the champions.” Some pointed out that Freddie Mercury did indeed finish out the song with “of the world” during Live Aid in 1985 and claim that is the reason so many people remember it incorrectly.

Black Eyed Peas – “Boom Boom Pow”

One of the hottest Mandela effect arguments circles around the Black Eyed Peas hit “Boom Boom Pow.” A large number of people are convinced the smash song came out in 2007/2008, believing Fergie’s part to be “I’m so 2008/You’re so 2000 and late.” In reality, the song was released in 2009, with the lyrics being “I’m so 3008/You’re so 2000 and late.” An entire Reddit thread shows users listing off distinct memories of the song being released in 2008 or earlier, including one user who recalls the song being played constantly at their work—a job they quit before 2009.

Drake & Josh theme song (“I Found A Way”)

While Nickelodeon’s hit show Drake & Josh only ran for three years, most fans knew the show’s theme song by heart—or so they thought. Sung by the show’s co-star Drake Bell, most believed the lyrics to be “It’s gonna take some time to realize.” However, during one of his live performances, Bell broke the hearts of many by revealing the lyrics to be “It’s gonna take some time to realign.”

Demi Lovato – “La La Land”

One of the more debated Mandela effects in the music scene comes from the early Demi Lovato hit “La La Land.” In the Spotify version of the song, Lovato sings “I still eat McDonald’s,” while the official music video has her saying “I still eat at Ronald’s.” Some place the blame on a simple copyright issue, believing Disney didn’t want to fork over extra money or give free promo to the restaurant chain. Others, however, were quick to blame it on the Mandela effect.

Metallica – “Fade To Black”

One Reddit user opted to show proof of the Mandela effect in the Metallica track “Fade To Black.” Originally, the lyrics were said to be “Life it seems to fade away” but were changed to “Life, it seems, will fade away.” The comments in the thread argue about the lyrics, with both sides claiming with absolute certainty that they’re correct.

37 musicians who exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe https://www.altpress.com/musicians-in-the-marvel-cinematic-universe/ Mon, 12 Apr 2021 23:55:33 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/musicians-in-the-marvel-cinematic-universe/ Music seems to know no boundaries, speaking a language that we all understand. It crosses all barriers and evidently all universes as well.

From Carol Danvers donning a Nine Inch Nails shirt in Captain Marvel to the crazy connection between WandaVision and My Chemical Romance, the MCU appears to be filled with superheroes from the music scene.

Captain Marvel

Nine Inch Nails

The debut of Captain Marvel gave fans a dose of ’90s nostalgia with an incredible soundtrack that acted as the perfect tribute to the decade. While the film gave these hits a serious download increase upon its debut, it was a Nine Inch Nails shirt cameo that had everybody talking. Danvers (played by Brie Larson) dons one of the band’s T-shirts throughout the film, which eventually led to a collab between NIN and Marvel for a limited-edition shirt.

Garbage

No ’90s-based film would be complete without the Garbage classicOnly Happy When It Rains.” The track begins to play while Danvers hops on a bike and takes a trip down memory lane, eventually switching over to be the song playing from the jukebox as she enters a bar.

Heart

On top of sporting a Heart shirt during the film, the band’s 1976 single “Crazy On You” was featured in a pivotal flashback scene that helps Captain Marvel unlock key pieces of her past.

Guns N’ Roses

Prior to Captain Marvel’s release, leaked set photos showed Larson sporting more ’90s attire—more specifically, a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt. Danvers is shown wearing the shirt during the film’s karaoke scene.

The Smashing Pumpkins and Bush

When Danvers attempts to make a long-distance call via a phone booth, you can see an abundance of posters plastered on the walls behind her. One of those posters promotes the Smashing Pumpkins album Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. During the same phone booth scene, fans can also catch a glimpse of posters for Gavin Rossdale’s Bush

The Avengers

Black Sabbath

One thing you have to love about Tony Stark is his ability to pull off a suit and tie as well as the perfect laid-back look. In The Avengers, one of those looks includes a Black Sabbath ’78 Never Say Die tour shirt.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

AC/DC and Led Zeppelin

On top of being revealed as Stark’s favorite band, AC/DC actually find themselves existing in a few films across the MCU. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker mistakes AC/DC for Led Zeppelin. They also appear on Captain America’s “To-Do” list (alongside Nirvana) in the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Iron Man 2

Queen

Just before getting into a fight at his birthday party in Iron Man 2, Stark requests a “fat beat” from the DJ that he can beat Lt. Col. James Rhodes (aka Rhodey) up to. Is there really any better time to put on Queen?

Thor: Ragnarok

Duran Duran

While Bruce Banner attempts to make his escape with Thor during Thor: Ragnarok, he finds himself in need of clothes. Luckily, he finds some of Stark’s clothes on the wrecked ship, which includes a Duran Duran shirt.

WandaVision

Marvel had fans on the edge of their seats during the run of the Disney+ series WandaVision. During one particular episode, fans caught a glimpse of Wanda’s twin boys watching an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba! Fans then pieced together the realization that if Yo Gabba Gabba! existed in the MCU, then that meant My Chemical Romance did as well since they appeared in an episode of the children’s show. It also means that Taking Back Sunday, Weezer and Jimmy Eat World also exist due to their guest appearances as well.

And if MCR are canon, then that means…

Vampire romance author Stephenie Meyer once revealed that Twilight was inspired by My Chemical Romance. Therefore, if MCR are canon, then there’s a strong chance Twilight is as well. This means that Paramore, Muse and Linkin Park all exist since they appeared on the movie’s soundtrack

Ant-Man

The Cure

During a fight inside a briefcase against the villain Yellowjacket, Ant-Man accidentally activates Siri on an iPhone. Yellowjacket then yells, “I am going to disintegrate you!” to which Siri responds, “Playing Disintegration by the Cure.” The epic fight scene is then accompanied by the opening track of the album, “Plainsong.”

Adam & The Ants

The band’s hit song “Ants Invasion” being played inside Baskin-Robbins while Scott Lang attempts to hide under the alias “Jack” is probably one of the best Easter eggs in the entire film.

Doctor Strange

Adele

When Dr. Strange meets Wong for the first time, he begins to compare him to famous artists who also go by one name—one of those mentions being Adele. Strange also compares him to Beyonce, Drake and Eminem, all of which Wong doesn’t seem to recognize.

Earth, Wind & Fire

The first surgery scene is when we get a feel for Dr. Strange’s musical knowledge. The first track playing during the scene is Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Shining Star” before it’s switched over to “Feels So Good” by Chuck Mangione

Guardians Of The Galaxy

The Guardians Of The Galaxy films are known for their incredible soundtracks, aka the badass mixtapes that Star-Lord is so attached to. These feature artists such as Hall & Oates, Lou Reed, Stevie Wonder, KISS, Blondie, Badfinger, Queen, Alice Cooper, Elvis Costello, John Lennon, David Bowie, Redbone and more.
