According to Deadline, Peters is starring in the Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story as the infamous serial killer.

The latest project from Murphy is also set to star Niecy Nash, Richard Jenkins, Penelope Ann Miller, Shaun J. Brown and Colin Ford.

Dahmer is one of the most notorious serial killers in American history. In 1992, he was convicted of murdering and dismembering 15 boys and men in Milwaukee from the late ’70s to early ’90s. He was sentenced to 15 life terms without parole for his crimes. However, after only serving two years of his sentence, Dahmer was murdered in prison in 1994 at the age of 34.

Deadline further reports that the majority of Monster will be told through Dahmer’s perspective as he went on a decade-spanning killing spree before being caught by Wisconsin police. As well, Monster will touch on white privilege and how Dahmer managed to get away with murder because of his clean-cut looks and “good guy” exterior.

Along with Peter’s portrayal of Dahmer, Nash has been cast as Glenda Cleveland, the series’ female lead. Cleveland was Dahmer’s real-life neighbor who contacted the police on numerous occasions regarding his behavior. In fact, Cleveland even alerted the FBI about her neighbor’s suspicious behavior. However, law enforcement never acted on any of her warnings.

Meanwhile, Miller and Jenkins are set to portray Dahmer’s mother Joyce and father Lionel. As well, Brown will play Tracy Edwards, the last victim of Dahmer’s who managed to escape, eventually leading to the serial killer’s arrest. Ford is set to play Chazz, a character whose details have not been announced just yet.

For the 10-episode limited series that spans from the 1960s to the ’90s, Murphy is teaming back up with screenwriter Ian Brennan. Previously, the duo has worked together on Glee, Scream Queens, Hollywood, Ratched and The Politician. So far, no release date for Monster has been revealed. However, the series is slated to premiere on Netflix.

There have been numerous on-screen portrayals of Dahmer over the years. Back in 2017, the Driver Era vocalist and Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina actor Ross Lynch played the serial killer in My Friend Dahmer. In the interview for the Driver Era’s Alternative Press cover story in 2019, Lynch recalled one particular encounter he had with Dahmer’s real-life friend John “Derf” Backderf. While filming a scene in Dahmer’s actual childhood home, Backderf found Lynch’s close resemblance to the serial killer so unsettling, it stopped a conversation.

“At one point,” Lynch told Alternative Press in 2019. “Derf was sitting across from me, I think we were in Dahmer’s house. I had the whole getup on, the glasses and everything. We were in the middle of a conversation, and suddenly he was like, ‘Dude, I’m sorry. You gotta take the glasses off or something. I don’t wanna look at you. You’re reminding me. You look exactly like him, and I’m kinda freaking out.’ That was a pretty surreal experience.”

More on Evan Peters and Ryan Murphy

Currently, Murphy and Peters have their hands full with American Horror Story: Double Feature. Filming for the new episodes resumed in the fall following delays amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In November, Murphy unveiled the official poster for season 10. The haunting image features a fang-filled mouth getting a tongue tattoo. Since its release, many fans have theorized that the sharp teeth could be a hint that AHS season 10 includes mermaids. However, Murphy has yet to confirm or deny these theories.

Then, in January, it was revealed that the Provincetown Select Board approved Murphy’s plans to film a project called “Pilgrim.” The project is scheduled to film in Cape Cod from the start of February until late March.

According to CBS Boston, it was not disclosed whether or not the filming is for American Horror Story or another project. However, Murphy has been subtly tagging posts related to season 10 with Provincetown. This has led to speculation the Massachusetts town maybe one of the season’s locations.

“There have been many inquires for information about the Ryan Murphy filming of ‘American Horror Story’ season 10,” interim town manager Charles Sumner told CBS Boston. “The only information we have shared with the press is 20th Century Fox Television has applied for the filming of the production ‘Pilgrim.’”

Earlier this week, Murphy confirmed that the new season of American Horror Story is called Double Feature. In an eerie trailer, the creator teases that the season has two different storylinesone by the sea and one by the sand.

As well, Murphy also revealed that model and actress Kaia Gerber is officially joining the American Horror Story cast. Along with Peters, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Kathy Bates, Leslie Grossman, Adina Porter, Angelica Ross and Finn Wittrock are all returning for season 10. As well, Macaulay Culkin will also be joining as an AHS newcomer. At this time, American Horror Story: Double Feature does not have a confirmed release date.

Along with American Horror Story, both Murphy and Peters have been working on other projects recently. Peters caught many Marvel fans by surprise when he appeared in Disney+’s WandaVision opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. On April 18, fans can see Peters return to the small screen in the new HBO Max limited series Mare Of Easttown with Kate Winslet.

As for Murphy, he is developing the new American Horror Story spin-off series American Horror Stories. The new show will feature “one-hour contained episodes” about horror myths and legends. Additionally, as Murphy shared late last year, the spin-off will include plenty of familiar faces from American Horror Story.

Although the official cast of American Horror Stories has not been revealed, Paulson will be directing an episode for the upcoming spin-off. Earlier this month, fans got their chilling first look at the new series. Rather than deliver new footage from the upcoming show, the haunting commercial includes clips from past American Horror Story seasons fans may recognize.

‘American Horror Story’ season 10 may remind fans of this classic storyline https://www.altpress.com/american-horror-story-season-10-may-remind-fans-of-this-classic-storyline/ Fri, 19 Feb 2021 03:17:05 +0000 With each passing day, American Horror Story fans are closer to finally seeing season 10.

Now, Lily Rabe has revealed that filming for the upcoming season reminds her of a particular fan-favorite storyline from years ago.

After facing delays amid the COVID-19 crisis, filming for season 10 finally began late last year. For Lily Rabe, being on the set of American Horror Story again is bringing back some major nostalgia vibes. In fact, she is comparing the upcoming season and the energy on set to the fan-favorite season American Horror Story: Murder House.

Ryan Murphy is one of the greatest people to work for. There’s a reason that those who work for him continue to work for him,” she tells Forbes. “I can’t believe this is season ten. I think the fact we get to have so many of the same people returning this season, there is this feeling of coming home. You get to tell a new story, play a new part, but the backbone of the thing is solid. It is wonderful getting into the sandbox again and have Ryan at the helm. I’m excited about this season, and I’m not alone in that. You can feel the energy on set. It’s just like it felt on season one.”

Although Ryan Murphy prefers to stay cryptic regarding AHS, big details regarding season 10 have already been revealed. Last fall, Sarah Paulson hinted that a controversial plot from a previous season may make a return in season 10.

Then, in November, Murphy finally unveiled the official poster for AHS season 10. The image features a fang-filled mouth getting a tongue tattoo, an image similar to one Murphy shared on his Instagram months prior. Many theorize the sharp teeth could be a hint that season 10 will include mermaids. As well, Murphy tagged the post in Provincetown, Massachusetts, a location fans began theorizing about last year.

Finally, last month, the actual theme for American Horror Story season 10 may have been revealed. According to CBS Boston, the Provincetown Select Board approved Murphy’s plans to film a project called “Pilgrim” in Cape Cod. The name of the project could be a major hint to what season 10 is about.

“There have been many inquires for information about the Ryan Murphy filming of ‘American Horror Story’ season 10,” interim town manager Charles Sumner said. “The only information we have shared with the press is 20th Century Fox Television has applied for the filming of the production ‘Pilgrim.’”

CBS Boston goes on to report that filming in the area is set to happen this February and wrap up in March. As well, according to the Cape Cod Times, 20th Century Fox submitted some vague descriptions of the scenes that will be filmed.

“In the application, there are bare-bone descriptions of what would be happening in the scenes,” the report says. “Such as people walking up the steps of the monument and around town, talking outside of a restaurant and vehicles driving about. The most vivid scene descriptions involve a Jeep driving along Route 6 and coming across a dead deer, and simulated gunfire in a cul de sac.”

Although it’s unknown if this “Pilgrim” project is actually American Horror Story season 10, it would make sense. Last year, Murphy shared a cryptic photo of a Provincetown beach, where he is reportedly filming.

There’s a lot of mystery surrounding the forthcoming season of American Horror Story. Production for season 10 was set to begin last spring. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, filming was delayed until last fall.

Ryan Murphy previously shared that season 10’s original plot was greatly dependent on warmer weather. Since production resumed this fall during the colder months, Murphy possibly had to reevaluate a lot of details.

“A lot of what I was going to shoot was dependent on a very specific moment,” Murphy said. “It was a weather-dependent show. So now I don’t know. I don’t know what we’re going to do, don’t know what I’m going to do next with that show. I don’t know if I’ll accelerate another season or wait til next year to shoot this one.”

The internet has a lot of thoughts on Macaulay Culkin’s ‘Home Alone’ mask https://www.altpress.com/macaulay-culkin-home-alone-mask/ Thu, 08 Oct 2020 02:11:56 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/macaulay-culkin-home-alone-mask/ Macaulay Culkin is giving a nod to Home Alone in a very unexpected way this week.

The actor just revealed his new COVID-19 mask inspired by an iconic scene from the film and, well, the internet doesn’t know how to feel about it.

For obvious reasons, face masks are essential these days. Since they are now part of our daily lives, many individuals are using the new accessory to show off their personal style and flair. For Culkin, however, he’s taking inspiration from Kevin McCallister for his new mask.

On Wednesday, Culkin took to social media to remind his followers to stay safe and wear a mask. In the post, he debuted his new mask that the internet has a lot of feelings about.

Culkin himself seems to be pointing out the weird decision to wear the “flayed skin” of his “younger self” on his face. Nevertheless, the internet still doesn’t quite know how they feel about his new accessory.

The official plot for American Horror Story season 10 is still unknown. However, Sarah Paulson may have revealed that an old controversial storyline is returning for the new season.

A previous plot line could return in ‘American Horror Story’ season 10 https://www.altpress.com/american-horror-story-season-10-aliens/ Fri, 02 Oct 2020 23:51:52 +0000 Last month, Sarah Paulson confirmed that filming for season 10 of American Horror Story begins this fall.

Now, Paulson may have just hinted that a controversial plot line from Asylum is returning for the new season.

Filming for American Horror Story season 10 was set to begin this past spring. However, due to coronavirus, filming was suspended indefinitely. Ryan Murphy previously shared that season 10’s original storyline was heavily based on warm weather. Since production was delayed until this fall, Murphy said the entire plan for season 10 could change.

“A lot of what I was going to shoot was dependent on a very specific moment,” Murphy said. “It was a weather-dependent show. So now I don’t know. I don’t know what we’re going to do.”

Now, Paulson may have hinted at what’s in store for the new AHS season. The actress recently took part in a video interview with Harper’s BAZAAR. During the interview, she is asked about the popular fan theory that season 10 may be about aliens.

Paulson tries to keep it coy with her response, but she does say that the inclusion of aliens in season 10 is “possible.”

“I plead the Fifth… everyone’s gonna think that’s me confirming it,” she says. “I just think it’s possible, how about that? I think that is… possible. I’m gonna get in so much trouble!”

Murphy previously revealed that a big hint about season 10’s plot can be found in the eighth episode of American Horror Story: 1984. In the episode, Star Trek‘s Leonard Nimoy is name-dropped in a line that talks about other paranormal creatures.

“Back in the ’70s, all anyone cared about was Bigfoot, aliens, the Loch Ness monster… all that Leonard Nimoy ‘In Search Of’ shit.”

As well, the same scene also mentions the National Enquirer. If you remember, this publication awarded $5,000 to Travis Walton for “best UFO case of the year” after he was allegedly abducted by aliens.

Aliens were also part of the plot in American Horror Story: Asylum. The inclusion of the UFOs was pretty controversial and a lot of viewers didn’t like it. Murphy, however, previously explained that there was a specific reason aliens were part of season 2.

For me, [aliens] were always an obvious metaphor for God,” he says. “It fit very easily into the world of a Catholic sanitarium asylum… It was also about science versus faith so it made sense to me.”

He also said that he loves the idea of aliens and the inclusion of them in season 2. So, perhaps Murphy has decided to bring them back for season 10?

“The show is a show that pays tribute to a lot of horror masters,” Murphy said. “We take that seriously, so I always loved the alien idea of it, I loved what it was, I loved what it was about.”

Joining Paulson for season 10 are Evan PetersKathy BatesLeslie GrossmanBillie LourdAdina PorterLily RabeAngelica Ross and Finn Wittrock. Macaulay Culkin will also be joining as an AHS newcomer.

There is no word yet on if Emma Roberts will be making an appearance in the new season. Roberts recently announced that she is expecting her first child with boyfriend Garrett Hedlund.

As well, Lourd just welcomed her first child with her fiance Austen Rydell. The couple decided to name their son in honor of Lourd’s late mother and legendary actress Carrie Fisher.

20 horror movies from the ’90s that are still as scary as they were then https://www.altpress.com/best-90s-horror-movies/ Wed, 09 Sep 2020 15:55:28 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/best-90s-horror-movies/ The decade that gave us dial-up internet and the “Rachel” cut remains one of the most fertile and influential eras in the development of horror cinema. Although the ’80s are easy to generalize as the era of iconic slashers such as Freddy and Jason, ’90s horror doesn’t lend itself to such convenient categorization.

From the self-aware genre deconstruction of Wes Craven’s Scream to the rise of the found-footage shocker spawned by The Blair Witch Project, originality and diversity were the hallmarks of ’90s horror. In this list, we’re looking back at 20 films that sent ’90s audiences screaming for the exits and continue to influence the genre today.

Audition

Directed by Takashi Miike, 1999’s Audition is a grueling exercise in depravity that will put the nerves of even the most jaded horror fan to the test. Ryo Ishibashi stars as Shigeharu Aoyama, a lonely widower who, with the help of a movie producer friend, sets up a series of fake auditions to find a new wife. He gets much more than he bargains for when the mysterious Asami, portrayed with sadistic glee by Eihi Shiina, wins the “role.” Both derided as misogynistic and hailed as a feminist masterpiece, Audition remains one of the most controversial horror films ever made.

The Blair Witch Project

One of the most divisive horror films of the last 21 years, The Blair Witch Project still inspires intense debate among horror fans. Conceived by filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the story of three college students who disappear while producing a documentary about the legend of a murderous witch had audiences questioning reality throughout the summer of 1999, thanks to a multimedia ad campaign that touted the events of the film as true. Although The Blair Witch Project was a smash hit, it proved to be a professional albatross for its cast, particularly star Heather Donahue, who has spent the intervening years distancing herself from the film.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Academy Award-winning director Francis Ford Coppola, best known for The Godfather, returned to his gothic horror roots with Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992. No stranger to the genre, as Coppola’s first mainstream release was the Roger Corman-produced 1963 thriller Dementia 13, the director promised it was the most faithful adaptation of the classic novel ever committed to film. Despite his boast, Coppola’s film takes just as many liberties with its source material as any of the previous big-screen versions. Nevertheless, it’s a spectacle featuring beautifully rendered in-camera special effects, stunning set design and brilliant performances from Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins as Dracula and Van Helsing, respectively. A flawed masterpiece (Keanu Reeves is woefully miscast as Jonathan Harker), Bram Stoker’s Dracula is essential viewing for fans of pop culture’s venerable vampire.

Candyman

Based on Clive Barker’s short story The Forbidden, Candyman stars Virginia Madsen as Helen Lyle, a grad student researching urban legends who stumbles on a series of murders committed by a vengeful ghost. Featuring one of horror’s last great slashers, Candyman’s eponymous killer, played by Tony Todd, is one of the few iconic horror characters to come out of the ’90s. An unusually thoughtful and intelligent genre film, Candyman’s brilliance lies in its use of horror to address serious social issues. Thanks to filmmaker Jordan Peele, fans can look forward to Todd’s return as the hook-handed killer in what’s described as a “spiritual sequel” later this year.

Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore)

Based on Italian comic book writer Tiziano Sclavi’s novel Dellamorte Dellamore, 1994’s Cemetery Man is a surreal and oddly philosophical take on the zombie subgenre. Directed by Michele Soavi, the film stars Rupert Everett as Francesco Dellamorte (something of a prototype for Sclavi’s popular comic character Dylan Dog), the overworked caretaker of Buffalora cemetery, who, with his mute assistant Gnaghi (François Hadji-Lazaro), faces a nightly onslaught of the living dead. A funny, frightening and, at times, baffling cinematic experience, Cemetery Man is sure to satisfy both fans of artsy Euro-horror and Evil Dead-style comedy.

Cronos

The first feature from the master of horror Guillermo del Toro, 1993’s Cronos stars Federico Luppi as Jesús Gris, an aged and pious antiques dealer who discovers a medieval device that can bestow eternal life hidden in the base of a statue. Although the mechanical device resembling a scarab imbues Gris with newfound vitality and youth, it also curses him with a hunger for blood and an aversion to sunlight. With the help of his granddaughter (Tamara Shanath), Gris must find a way to reverse the curse and keep the device away from an evil businessman (Claudio Brook) desperate to possess its secret. A masterfully realized film, Cronos is a unique take on the well-worn vampire trope with a fascinating mythology all its own.

Dead Alive

Long before he brought Middle-Earth to the big screen, Peter Jackson was New Zealand’s prime purveyor of low-budget, gross-out horror comedies. The pinnacle of Jackson’s splatter period, which includes the alien invasion flick Bad Taste and the wonderfully tasteless puppet musical Meet The Feebles, is 1992’s Dead Alive. Released as Braindead in the director’s native country, Dead Alive stars Timothy Balme as the mild-mannered Lionel Cosgrove, a dutiful young man who serves as caretaker to his elderly mother, Vera (Elizabeth Moody). When a bite from a Sumatran rat-monkey transforms Vera into a slavering, bloodthirsty ghoul, Lionel must face down a full-fledged zombie plague. Featuring nauseating special effects, the inspired use of garden tools and a kung-fu fighting priest who “kicks ass for the Lord,” Dead Alive is a gruesome masterpiece of slapstick horror.

The Exorcist III

Largely unappreciated at the time of its 1990 release, The Exorcist III has since become a revered cult classic. Written and directed by author William Peter Blatty, adapted from his 1983 novel Legion, the third installment in the Exorcist series stars George C. Scott as detective William Kinderman, a relatively minor character in the first film, who’s investigating a series of murders that are suspiciously similar to crimes committed by a long-dead serial killer. Marred only by a tacked-on exorcism sequence imposed by the studio, Blatty’s film is expertly paced, beautifully lensed and filled with stunning performances from Scott and co-stars Ed Flanders, Jason Miller and Brad Dourif. A moody contemplation of faith in the face of a violent and indifferent world, The Exorcist III is a smart and disturbing film worthy of its celebrated predecessors.

From Dusk Till Dawn

Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez were riding high as indie film superstars when they joined forces for their 1996 Mexican vampire opus From Dusk Till Dawn. Directed by Rodriguez from Tarantino’s script, From Dusk Till Dawn begins as a typically Tarantino-esque crime story about two bank robbers on the run that morphs into a hyperviolent survival horror movie halfway through its running time. Packed with Tarantino’s trademark dialogue flourishes and Rodriguez’s kinetic camera moves, From Dusk Till Dawn never quite lives up to the promise of its creative team or its stellar ensemble cast headed up by George Clooney and Harvey Keitel. Nevertheless, it’s a visual feast for action and gore fans and a unique variation on the vampire myth.

In The Mouth Of Madness

John Carpenter’s Lovecraftian pastiche, In The Mouth Of Madness, is the third and final chapter of the director’s thematically connected “apocalypse trilogy,” which also includes 1982’s The Thing and 1987’s Prince Of Darkness. Sam Neil stars as insurance investigator John Trent, who’s hired by a publishing house to investigate the mysterious disappearance of its star client, horror author Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow). As Trent gets closer to unraveling the writer’s sinister secrets, he finds fiction melding with reality in an ancient plot with dire circumstances for all of humanity. Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, In The Mouth Of Madness captures the mind-bending tone, oppressive atmosphere and overall existential dread of the late pulp author’s patented cosmic horror far better than most direct adaptations of his work.

Jacob’s Ladder

Tim Robbins is Jacob Singer, a Vietnam veteran coping with bizarre hallucinations and gaps in time, in Adrian Lyne’s chilling 1990 shocker Jacob’s Ladder. In one of the most disturbing horror films of the ’90s, Lyne expertly crafts a potent metaphor for post-traumatic stress disorder out of imagery both sacred and surreal. Relentless in its barrage of terrifyingly hallucinogenic sequences, Jacob’s Ladder is a difficult horror film that demands much from its audience but delivers a thoroughly grim, emotionally draining and ultimately satisfying cinematic experience. Seek out the original and avoid the toothless and wholly unnecessary 2019 remake.

Misery

Misery, released in 1990, stands as one of the best ever cinematic adaptations of a Stephen King novel. Directed by Rob Reiner, who had a previous hit with a King story in 1986’s Stand By Me, Misery stars James Caan as Paul Sheldon, the author of a series of best-selling Victorian potboilers featuring the Jane Eyre-inspired heroine Misery Chastain. The writer, looking to leave his most popular creation behind for more serious literary aspirations, decides to end the series with Misery’s death. Following a near-fatal accident on a snowy backroad, a gravely injured Sheldon is rescued by his self-proclaimed “No. 1 fan,” Annie Wilkes. Wilkes, portrayed by Kathy Bates in a delightfully deranged Oscar-winning performance, initially dotes on the injured author. However, when she discovers that Sheldon has killed off her beloved Misery, Wilkes unleashes her psychotic wrath on the crippled author.

Nightbreed

Nightbreed, written and directed by Clive Barker from his 1988 novella Cabal, is a sublime dark fantasy that upends the standard horror paradigm by casting its monsters as noble heroes facing extermination at the hands of diabolical humans. Suffering from studio indifference and a horribly misguided ad campaign, the film opened to dismal reviews and poor box-office receipts upon its 1990 release. Like all great cult films, Nightbreed slowly found its audience and has been reevaluated as a genre classic, thanks to the long-awaited 2014 release of Barker’s approved cut. A twisted parable for outsiders and misfits, Nightbreed’s rich mythology and subversive subtext make Barker’s tale a gothic fable for the ages.

Night Of The Living Dead

Directed by makeup effects master Tom Savini and written by creator George A. Romero, 1990’s Night Of The Living Dead is the only authorized (and worthy) remake of the groundbreaking 1968 classic. Although interference from the studio compromised Savini’s grand vision for reinterpreting Romero’s masterpiece, the final product hits exactly the right notes by expanding on the original film’s premise with more clearly realized characters. The most radical (and welcome) change is Patricia Tallman’s updated Barbara, who’s far from the near-catatonic basket case portrayed by Judith O’Dea in the 1968 film. A badass woman in the tradition of Alien’s Ellen Ripley, the ’90s Barbara adds another layer of subtext to Romero’s celebrated use of the genre as socio-political allegory.

The People Under The Stairs

Of the many great genre directors who built their reputations in the ’70s, the late Wes Craven was arguably the only one to maintain both a high level of prolificacy and quality throughout the ’90s. The People Under The Stairs is among Craven’s best ’90s offerings. A surprise hit with audiences in 1991, the film stars Brandon Adams as Fool, a 12-year-old kid roped into helping a couple of small-time criminals rob wealthy weirdos Mommy and Daddy Robeson, portrayed by Wendy Robie and Twin PeaksEverett McGill, respectively. However, the would-be crooks’ dreams of easy money are dashed when they stumble on the crazed couple’s terrifying secret. A pointed satire of late-stage capitalism and Reaganite conservatism, The People Under The Stairs is a superb blend of black comedy and horror that remains relevant nearly 30 years after its release.

Ringu

A cursed video holds deadly consequences for all who view it in Hideo Nakata’s Ringu. Based on Koji Suzuki’s 1991 novel of the same name, Ringu was a runaway box-office hit in its native Japan, instigating a pop culture tsunami of sequels, remakes and manga. Responsible for inspiring a worldwide fascination with Asian horror, Ringu’s popularity caught the eye of Hollywood, resulting in the excellent 2002 Westernized remake The Ring from director Gore Verbinski. Although the film’s horrifying use of Japanese folklore’s yūrei, the pale, stringy-haired ghost that appears in various guises throughout much of J-horror, has passed into genre cliché, Ringu’s power to frighten is undiminished. If you’ve only seen the remake, you owe it to yourself to seek out the film that terrified half the world.

Scream

Director Wes Craven upended the very genre he helped create with 1996’s Scream. Written by Kevin Williamson, who would later strike TV gold with his coming-of-age hit Dawson’s Creek, Scream is the ultimate post-postmodern deconstruction of the slasher subgenre. The first film of its kind to openly articulate the unspoken rules of horror flicks, Craven’s film revels in examining the conventions of the genre in the context of characters who are aware of horror’s role in popular culture. Aside from its rich subtext, Scream also functions as a brilliant and effective horror film. Although Craven and Williamson’s intent was to bury the slasher film under the absurdity of its often misogynistic tropes, Scream nevertheless opened the floodgates for a new wave of slashers at the close of the decade.

The Silence Of The Lambs

Based on Thomas Harris’ best-selling 1988 novel, The Silence Of The Lambs stars Jodie Foster as rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling, who’s assigned to investigate the sadistic serial killer known only as Buffalo Bill. Hoping to gain insight into the killer’s methods, Starling enlists the aid of imprisoned murderer and cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). Lecter, a former psychiatrist and master manipulator, agrees to assist the desperate Starling, but she soon discovers the price of the brilliant sociopath’s help may be her sanity. The only horror film to win an Oscar for Best Picture, The Silence Of The Lambs also garnered Best Actor honors for both Foster and Hopkins. Perfectly paced and magnificently acted, The Silence Of The Lambs is a near-perfect psychological thriller.

The Sixth Sense

Almost two decades after its 1999 release, The Sixth Sense remains director M. Night Shyamalan’s best, most cohesive and most coherent film. Haley Joel Osment stars as Cole Sear, a disturbed young boy with the power to communicate with the dead. Overwhelmed by haunting visions of the deceased, Cole finds solace in child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) who, despite facing his own demons, is determined to help the boy understand his gift. The Sixth Sense was a huge hit with both critics and audiences, coming in second to Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace in total box-office receipts. Featuring one of cinema’s most shocking twists, Shyamalan’s film is a landmark horror movie which, sadly, its gifted director has yet to match.

Tremors

A fun throwback to ’50s-style drive-in monster flicks, 1990’s Tremors stars Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward as good ol’ boys Val and Earl, whose plans to escape their dull lives in the dead-end desert town of Perfection, Nevada, is thwarted by the sudden invasion of giant, man-eating sandworms. Taking place almost entirely in broad daylight, Tremors is a special effects extravaganza that never relies on darkness and shadow to obscure its monsters. The film’s menacing sandworms, branded “graboids” for their habit of grabbing unsuspecting victims from below, are marvels of practical effects magic, with a weight and menace absent in the CGI creature features of the last two decades. Featuring an engaging supporting cast that includes country music star Reba McEntire and ’80s sitcom dad Michael Gross as married, machine gun-toting survivalists, Tremors is a crowd-pleasing celluloid thrill ride filled with action, suspense and laughs.

Sarah Paulson opens up on “intimidating” ‘AHS’ return amid the pandemic https://www.altpress.com/sarah-paulson-american-horror-story-season-10-return/ Sat, 05 Sep 2020 01:31:56 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/sarah-paulson-american-horror-story-season-10-return/ Due to coronavirus, season 10 of American Horror Story has been significantly delayed. So much so that Ryan Murphy previously revealed the entire storyline may be changed completely after revealing various hints over the past few months.

Now, Sarah Paulson is opening up about her anticipated return to the American Horror Story set after missing out on American Horror Story: 1984. As well, she’s revealing all of the precautions the series is taking amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Back in May, Paulson revealed the real reason she didn’t appear in AHS: 1984. This year, Paulson starred in Hulu‘s Mrs. America. However, filming for AHS and Mrs. America clashed so, to the disappointment of fans, she was unable to appear in 1984.

Paulson is now back, however, and is starring in American Horror Story season 10. In a new interview, Paulson says her return to the series’ set will “nerve-wracking” amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, the American Horror Story team will have many precautions in place when filming begins in October.

“In terms of protocols, you can’t even imagine the emails I get and the documents I get,” she says. “And the consideration around all of it has been extraordinary.”

She further elaborates that she and her co-stars feel as protected as possible with the rules put in place by both Disney and Murphy.

“Disney and Ryan Murphy Television have all been very, very on top of it,” she continues. “And so I feel as protected as I can feel, given that I will be mask-free, working on a set around a bunch of people. So it’s definitely intimidating and nerve-wracking.”

For Paulson, getting back to “normal” will be a big change of pace after spending so many months at home.

“But I’ve been told by people who have done it, that the lead up to it – because we’ve all been our houses for months and months and all of a sudden what was normal, to spend hours and hours on set with over a hundred people, now seems so far away and so impossible to imagine that the thought of doing it feels really scary.”

Joining Paulson for season 10 will be Evan PetersKathy BatesLeslie GrossmanBillie LourdAdina PorterLily RabeAngelica Ross and Finn Wittrock. Macaulay Culkin will also be joining as an AHS newcomer.

There is no word yet on if Emma Roberts will be making an appearance in the new season. Roberts recently announced that she is expecting her first child with boyfriend Garrett Hedlund.

Paulson’s latest project with Murphy Nurse Ratched premieres on Netflix Sept. 18. The new series is based on the infamous villain from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest – Nurse Ratched. The show’s first trailer was unveiled back in August.

During a recent TCA panel, Paulson also announced that she is directing an episode of Murphy’s American Horror Stories. The forthcoming spinoff series will air exclusively on FX and Hulu. A lot of information is still unknown about American Horror Stories. However, we do know that the series will include “one-hour contained episodes.”

We’re closer to knowing what ‘American Horror Story’ season 10 is about https://www.altpress.com/american-horror-story-ryan-murphy-season-10-clue/ Thu, 28 May 2020 00:42:42 +0000 Even though fans won’t be getting season 10 of American Horror Story until next year, the show’s creator Ryan Murphy is still teasing what the new season will be about.

In a new post this week, Murphy has revealed another clue about what fans can expect to see in the new AHS season.

Murphy began teasing clues to AHS fans about what season 10 will entail back in February. He first teased the potential theme for the new season and posted another teaser hinting the new season focuses heavily on the beach.

However, plans for season 10 quickly began to change as the year progressed. Murphy planned to begin filming American Horror Story’s tenth season earlier this year. However, the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to the show’s production.

In an interview at the start of May, Murphy shared that the plot of season 10 is heavily reliant on warm weather. This falls in line with the past clues involving the beach and sunny weather. Since filming has been pushed back significantly into possibly the latter part of the year, Murphy said that season 10 may have to change in its entirety.

However, it now appears that this may not be the case. AHS fans got an update from FX this week. The network announced that AHS season 10 has been pushed back to 2021 due to the production shutdown.

Along with the news of AHS coming back next year, Murphy is sharing another clue about what the anthology’s tenth season is about. He took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a new season 10 clue. The clue is another image of a beach setting, reinforcing the assumptions that the new season’s setting and plot won’t change after all.

There have already been a number of theories about what season 10 could be about. Some fans believe it could involve a natural disaster surrounding water like a tsunami or a hurricane. Nevertheless, Murphy made it very clear that his latest post is, in fact, a season 10 clue.

Although we don’t know exactly what AHS season 10 will entail, the cast members for the new season have already been confirmed. Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will be returning for the new season.

Peters revealed last year that he was sitting out the last season and didn’t really expand why. He has previously talked about the mental toll acting on the show takes on him. Paulson also shared recently why she didn’t appear in the show’s ninth season, 1984.

Joining Paulson and Peters for the tenth season are Kathy BatesLeslie GrossmanBillie LourdAdina PorterLily RabeAngelica Ross and Finn Wittrock. Macaulay Culkin will also be joining as an AHS newcomer.

There is no word yet on if Emma Roberts will be making an appearance in season 10. However, fans can expect Jessica Lange to not appear in the new season.

Along with AHS season 10 arriving in 2021, Murphy’s new American Horror Story spinoff has also been added to the FX 2021 release schedule. The spinoff, called American Horror Stories, will feature hour-long episodes that tell a story from beginning to end. It was also reported this month that Murphy is currently working on a new series involving AHS stars Leslie Jordan and Dylan McDermott.
