This time around, Heafy has selected two classics from My Chemical Romance and Trivium and created a mashup we didn’t know we needed until now.

However, Heafy has also taken inspiration from an unusual source for the new mashup – Michael Bublé.

Over the years, Matt Heafy has treated fans to plenty of well-crafted covers. In fact, blink-182, Elvis Presley and Killswitch Engage are just a few of the artists Heafy has covered in the past. As well, who could forget his iconic take on “I Saw A Tiger,” the classic tune from Tiger King star Joe Exotic? Heafy even gave Britney Spears‘ “…Baby One More Timea heavy metal refresh in a 2018 cover.

Now, Heafy is back with another surprising mashup that somehow works. Earlier this week, he shared his mashup of Trivium’s “The Heart From Your Hate” and My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome To The Black Parade.” However, this time, Heafy composed the entire mashup in the style of Michael Bublé. More specifically, he seemingly takes inspiration from Bublé’s “It’s A Beautiful Day.”

Somehow, all of the contrasting components blend together in this new mashup. My Chemical Romance fans will instantly recognize the distinct guitar riffs and lyrics from “Welcome To The Black Parade.” Meanwhile, Heafy’s signature vocals and incorporation of Trivium lyrics are details listeners will identity almost immediately.

To top it all off, Michael Bublé’s upbeat pop melodies are overlayed across the top of the mashup, creating a heavy metal/punk rock/pop medley we didn’t know we needed until now. For some, it may be a sensory overload as you try to digest all of the different elements at play. Nevertheless, the seamless mashup is one of Heafy’s most clever and well-thought-out creations yet.

What are your reactions to Matt Heafy’s new mashup? Do you think he should do more mashups like this in the future? Let us know in the comments below.

Lil Wayne drops new song “Ain’t Got Time” following Donald Trump pardon https://www.altpress.com/lil-wayne-drops-new-song-aint-got-time-following-donald-trump-pardon/ Thu, 21 Jan 2021 22:39:57 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/lil-wayne-drops-new-song-aint-got-time-following-donald-trump-pardon/ On his final day in office, former President Donald Trump pardoned and gave clemency to 143 people including Lil Wayne.

Now, the rapper is celebrating his last-minute Presidential pardon with the new song “Ain’t Got Time” featuring Foushée.

On Tuesday, reports emerged that Lil Wayne and Tiger King star Joe Exotic were on the list of final pardons Trump planned to make before Joe Biden‘s inauguration. Exotic’s team was so sure the Netflix star was going to be pardoned that they sent a limo to his prison.

In the end, Exotic was not one of the 143 people given clemency and pardons from Trump. However, it turns out Lil Wayne and rapper Kodak Black were among those included on the list.

Last year, Lil Wayne was charged and pled guilty to one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon during a flight on his private jet from California to Florida. Lil Wayne was first convicted of a felony gun charge in New York back in 2009.

Given his past conviction, this latest charge meant that, if convicted, he would’ve faced up to 10 years in prison. Lil Wayne was originally scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 28 so the pardon arrived at the perfect time for the rapper.

Lil Wayne has supported Donald Trump in the past. However, many speculate that the rapper only supported Trump in order to receive a pardon.

This week, Lil Wayne’s lawyer Bradford Cohen disputed claims that he finessed a pardon from the former President. During an interview with the New York Times, Cohen said that he helped organize a meeting between his client and Trump, but denies it was a strategic move to earn a Presidential pardon. Cohen further says that the meeting likely helped sway Trump into granting a pardon, but that was never Lil Wayne’s intention.

“It never hurts that someone gets a full understanding of an individual when they’re just looking at a piece of paper,” he said. “In hindsight, I guess it worked out. I think they had a very strong connection. He’s in the entertainment world. He’s got a style that’s similar in terms of the way that he carries himself, and a lot of rappers and people in the industry relate to that.”

As well, on Wednesday, Howard Srebnick, another attorney for Wayne, told Rolling Stone that prosecuting Lil Wayne would’ve been a violation of the Second Amendment.

“A pardon for [Lil Wayne] is consistent with the views of many jurists — including Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett — that prosecuting a non-violent citizen for merely possessing a firearm violates the Second Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.”

Following his pardon, Lil Wayne posted a tweet thanking his lawyer and the former President for making it happen.

I want to thank President Trump for recognizing that I have so much more to give to my family, my art, and my community. I also want to thank @bradfordcohen for working so diligently to secure another chance for me. Love!”

Now, Lil Wayne is celebrating his Presidential pardon with the new song “Ain’t Got Time.” The song’s lyrics directly reference the situation that led to his now pardoned weapons charge last year.

“The feds, they hot on us, 100 on the thermometer,” he raps. “They raided my private plane, got one that’s more privater. FBI arrest me, why?”

Donald Trump’s final pardons reportedly include Lil Wayne and Joe Exotic https://www.altpress.com/donald-trumps-final-pardons-reportedly-include-lil-wayne-and-joe-exotic/ Tue, 19 Jan 2021 23:29:27 +0000 Tuesday, Jan. 19 marks Donald Trump‘s last full day as the President Of The United States. For his final hours, Trump has a lot of business to take care of including reportedly pardoning around 100 people.

According to various reports, Lil Wayne and Joe Exotic, the star of Netflix‘s Tiger King, are among those expected to receive pardons from the president on Tuesday.

Last year, Tiger King star Joe Exotic made it publicly known that he wants Donald Trump to pardon him. Exotic is currently serving 22 years in federal prison for hiring a hitman to kill Carole Baskin and for more than a dozen wildlife violations including the killing of five tigers. Despite the charges, Exotic still claims he is innocent and was wrongly convicted for the murder-for-hire plot against Baskin.

Back in May, Exotic’s legal team put together a case for his pardon that was reportedly sent to the Trump administration. Now, it looks like Exotic’s final chance to be pardoned is here.

According to the Independent, Trump plans to pardon around 100 people on his final day in office. Although the list of those expected to receive these pardons has not been fully revealed, there are reports that Exotic is included.

In fact, Exotic’s legal team is so confident he is going to be pardoned that there is reportedly a limo waiting for him outside of the prison. Private investigator Eric Love, who is leading Exotic’s case, told Metro.co.uk they are confident a pardon will happen.

“We’re going to be celebrating,” Love said. “We have good reason to believe it will come through. We’re confident enough we already have a limousine parked about half a mile from the prison. We are really in action mode right now. I’ve got make-up, wardrobe, the whole unit that will come up. The first thing Joe wants to do, he wants his hair done. He hasn’t had his hair done in two-and-a-half years. That’s the first order of business. Then we’ll probably go and get some pizzas, steak, maybe a McRib.”

Along with the Tiger King star, rapper Lil Wayne could potentially be pardoned on Jan. 19. Lil Wayne has previously supported Donald Trump and is hoping he will be pardoned for his recent weapon charges ahead of his court hearing.

Back in November, Lil Wayne was charged with one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon during a flight on his private jet from California to Florida. Lil Wayne was first convicted of a felony gun charge in New York back in 2009.

Despite Joe Biden‘s inauguration happening on Wednesday, Donald Trump’s troubles are far from over. Last week, the House Of Representatives voted to impeach him for a second time. Now, the case is being moved to the Senate where it will be determined if Trump is guilty of inciting an insurrection stemming from the U.S. Capitol riots.

Joe Exotic’s zoo is apparently haunted so they called ‘Ghost Adventures’ https://www.altpress.com/ghost-adventures-joe-exotic-zoo/ Sat, 10 Oct 2020 00:41:53 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/ghost-adventures-joe-exotic-zoo/ Is Tiger King star Joe Exotic‘s former zoo really haunted? Well, the Ghost Adventures team is on a mission to find the answer.

Zak Bagans, Aaron Goodwin, Jay Wasley and Billy Tolley are heading to the Greater Wynnewood Animal Park this Halloween.

Exotic is currently serving 22 years in prison for a murder-for-hire plot. He was convicted of hiring a hitman to kill Carole Baskin. He also has more than a dozen wildlife violations including the killings of five tigers.

Given his recent criminal activity and, well, being in jail, Exotic lost ownership of his zoo. Since then, the Greater Wynnewood Animal Park has closed permanently. However, past workers and visitors have reported some strange paranormal activity over the years.

As we learned in Netflix‘s Tiger King, the zoo has quite the history of both animal tragedy and drama. Given its past, staff says they regularly experience mysterious and unexplained paranormal activity. They are convinced these experiences are connected to the zoo’s dark history and events.

So, naturally, the Ghost Adventures crew was called to investigate. They will be taking part in a paranormal lockdown at the zoo as part of a two-hour special that arrives later this month.

Ghost Adventures‘ fearless and truly fashionable leader Zak Bagans says the investigation was “wild” and truly not what they anticipated.

“This investigation was wild from beginning to end,” Bagans says. “We went into it thinking we knew a little about this story already, but there were so many surprises at every turn. It’s a super-charged location and it felt surreal to be there. This special has all the drama, characters and twists that you would expect in any Joe Exotic story. But just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all, there’s more.”

According to a press release, Jeff and Lauren Lowe who purchased the zoo in 2016 reveal some startling facts in the upcoming episode. The owners believe that the zoo’s past haunts the grounds to this day. As well, employees believe that the spirit of Travis Maldonado is still very much present. Maldonado tragically killed himself inside of the zoo.

The Ghost Adventures episode will include exclusive interviews with zoo staff including Erik Cowie and Allen Glover. Other familiar faces from Tiger King will also be appearing in the episode.

To explore the entire zoo, Ghost Adventures is going bigger than it ever has before. Engineer Bill Chappell’s audio experiment will span the entire zoo and a forensic team with cadaver dogs will search the property for evidence of alleged buried bodies.

Travel Channel’s two-hour special Ghost Adventures: Horror at Joe Exotic Zoo premieres Thursday, Oct. 29 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Carole Baskin’s ‘DWTS’ debut will include commercial on missing husband https://www.altpress.com/carole-baskin-missing-husband-commercial/ Tue, 15 Sep 2020 02:10:10 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/carole-baskin-missing-husband-commercial/ Tiger King star Carole Baskin is heading back to television for Dancing With The Stars.

However, the family of Don Lewis, her missing ex-husband, plan to remind everyone about her alleged involvement in his disappearance. The Lewis family have purchased commercial time and plan to air an ad regarding Lewis’ disappearance during Baskin’s Dancing With The Stars debut on Monday.

Last month, the Lewis family filed a lawsuit against Baskin. They are suing Baskin for answers regarding her ex-husband’s disappearance. They are also offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to solving the case.

Lewis vanished in 1997, a day before a scheduled trip to Costa Rica. He was never found and declared legally dead in 2002. He and Baskin started the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa together.

Along with the lawsuit and reward, the Lewis family paid for a series of Tampa-area billboards asking for information regarding the case. Now, it looks like they are taking their advertising one step further.

If you tune in for the commercial breaks during Monday’s Dancing With The Stars episode, you will likely see one regarding Lewis’ disappearance. According to TMZ, the Lewis family have purchased a commercial spot during the ABC show. It features Don’s daughters Gale, Lynda and Donna, plus his former assistant Anne McQueen and the family’s attorney.

TMZ also suggests that Baskin’s inclusion on Dancing With The Stars is a bad call on the network’s part seeing as she’s involved in an ongoing investigation.

Baskin has always maintained her innocence in Lewis’ disappearance. Earlier this month, she was confirmed to be joining the new season of Dancing With The Stars. The new season’s first episode premieres Monday, Sept 14.

As we saw in Tiger KingJoe Exotic repeatedly speculated that Baskin killed Lewis and possibly fed him to the tigers. However, no information proving this theory has been brought forward.

Baskin previously sued Exotic for trademark and copyright infringement and won the $1 million civil case against him. In the end, Baskin won control of Exotic’s zoo back in June.

In August, it was reported that Netflix has secured the rights to the second season of Tiger King. Exotic, Dillon Passage and Jeff Lowe have all vowed to return for the new episodes. Exotic reportedly wants to use the second season to clear his name.

He is currently serving 22 years in prison for a murder-for-hire plot. Exotic was convicted of hiring a hitman to kill Baskin and has more than a dozen wildlife violations including the killings of five tigers.

Despite a possible second season, however, Baskin revealed that she has no plans to return to the Netflix show. According to the Radio Times, she felt deceived by the show and that no amount of money would make her come back for more episodes.

“There is no amount of money that would cause me to trust the producers again after their sick betrayal of the animals and me,” she said. “I wasn’t paid the first time around, although several people have come forward saying they were paid. That violates the very nature of a documentary along with so many other things that were staged and taken out of context.”

This Hannah Montana and “WAP” mashup is the best of both worlds https://www.altpress.com/hannah-montana-wap-tiktok-mashup/ Fri, 28 Aug 2020 23:11:15 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/hannah-montana-wap-tiktok-mashup/ A new Hannah Montana mashup with Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion‘s “WAP” has emerged onto TikTok and, well, it sounds better than you’d probably expect.

TikToker @Omfgrant (a.k.a. Grant Whitson) shared his “mashup nobody asked for” called “The Best Of Both WAPs” this week.

After all these years, Miley Cyrus‘ claim-to-fame Hannah Montana is still one of Disney‘s most popular shows. In the series, viewers watch the squeaky clean Miley Ray Stewart live her double life as the pop superstar Hannah Montana.

Now, Hannah Montana is trading in her G-rated persona and Mickey Mouse ears for a new “WAP” mashup. Whitson has taken the instrumental music from Hannah Montana’s hit “Best Of Both Worlds” and mashed it together with Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s viral collab “WAP.”

Now, obviously, the two songs couldn’t be more different. However, Whitson somehow makes it work and has created a NSFW track that would make most Disney execs uncomfortable. Also, he gives a subtle nod to the company in the video with his t-shirt.

Outside of being mashed up with Disney pop anthems, “WAP” has been at the center of some controversy.

Recently, comedian Russell Brand decided to post a video debating on whether or not the single’s video is truly feminist and simply “porn.” His comments led to backlash from former fans and others in the industry. As well, Tiger King star Carole Baskin has also spoken out about the video’s use of wild cats.

Despite the controversy, “WAP” is doing incredibly well. Since the video’s release on Aug. 6, it has been viewed over 146 million times. “WAP” is also doing well on streaming services such as Spotify where its been streamed over 120 million times.

Outside of music, Cardi B is getting involved in the upcoming presidential election. The rapper and Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden recently discussed his plans to bring change to America in a new interview.

Meanwhile, Cyrus recently unveiled her new single “Midnight Sky.” She also gave a nod to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s hit collab on Instagram.

9 Halloween costumes you’re inevitably going to see in 2020 https://www.altpress.com/2020-halloween-costumes-inspiration/ Mon, 24 Aug 2020 21:55:15 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/2020-halloween-costumes-inspiration/ It’s the end of summer, which means Halloween is right around the corner at last. In our book, it’s never too early to celebrate. After the mess that 2020 has been so far, we’re looking forward to our favorite holiday and celebrating with reckless abandon.

It also means that we’re well into planning our Halloween costume, even if we’re just going to wear it on a Zoom call. Luckily, the entire year has left us with many ideas for outfits. You can check out 10 Halloween costumes that have been inspired by the people, places and events of 2020, so maybe you’ll get a little inspiration yourself.

Joe Exotic from Tiger King

Thankfully when the whole country was shutting down due to the coronavirus outbreak, Netflix blessed us with the most wonderfully chaotic series of all time. Being Joe Exotic for Halloween is easy—get a patterned shirt, a mullet wig and carry around a stuffed tiger all night. This could also easily be made into a multi-person Tiger King costume, with others dressing up like Carole Baskin, Doc Antle and more.

The coronavirus

There’s absolutely nothing that has defined this year more than the coronavirus outbreak. There are so many ways you can dress up like this, whether it’s by sporting a bright red outfit like the virus itself or by wearing masks and carrying hoards of toilet paper all night.

The cast of Euphoria

This HBO show is the perfect Halloween inspiration for someone looking to rock a killer makeup look this year. Grab a few friends and pick your favorite Euphoria character—there are plenty of outfits to choose from. You can make this even more meta by channeling the Halloween costumes that the characters wore in the holiday episode from season 1.

Kanye West as president

Kanye West running for president is just another part of 2020’s relentless insanity. If you’re so inclined, you can commemorate this weird moment in popular culture by dressing up as a presidential West, featuring a Kanye 2020 red hat and some Yeezy-inspired loungewear.

Harry Styles in the “Watermelon Sugar” music video

If you’re a Harry Styles fan, you’ve watched the “Watermelon Sugar” video at least 20 times and can easily find an outfit from it to replicate. A good suggestion is to wear an orange crochet tank top, blue sunglasses and carry around a slice of watermelon all night.

The Umbrella Academy

The second season of the Netflix series inspired by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s comics has also been a saving grace this year. If you’re in need of a group costume, why not just dress up as The Umbrella Academy? You can honestly probably find similar outfits in the school uniform section of a clothing store, so it should be pretty easy to get everyone matching and looking perfect.

Harley Quinn in Birds Of Prey

While Suicide Squad costumes are so 2016, it’s still relevant to dress up like Harley Quinn, thanks to her new movie Birds Of Prey. Instead of channeling the OG Harley Quinn look, try to get inspiration from her new looks, such as wearing a faux leather jacket and plenty of sparkles.

My plan vs. 2020

Each new year brings us countless memes that we often forget about, but none of them have been more spot-on than the “my plan vs. 2020” memes. This would be a great costume for two people—one person dresses up as the “plan” (a college graduate, world traveler, etc.) and the other is the reality (taking Zoom classes in your pajamas, binge-watching Netflix all day, etc.). The “2020” costume could also just be any rendition of a disaster, such as a dumpster on fire, as absolutely everyone is going to relate to your look.

Animal Crossing villagers

Aside from Netflix, we’ve spent an ungodly amount of hours throughout the past several months playing Animal Crossing on Nintendo Switch. You can channel the New Horizons vibes in real life by dressing up as your own character or as one of the villagers. You will just need an adorable outfit and a tool, such as a shovel or a fishing rod, to nail it.

10 trap-metal releases that push the genre into new extremes https://www.altpress.com/best-trap-metal-releases/ Fri, 21 Aug 2020 21:55:01 +0000 To the dismay of gatekeepers, trap metal continues to evolve far beyond screaming over a trap beat. In honor of that, here are some of the recent gems in the most brutal kind of trap that hint toward the future of metal.

$uicideboy$, Travis Barker – LIVE FAST DIE WHENEVER

History was made in trap metal when $uicideboy$ and Travis Barker united forces for a hard-hitting EP featuring Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer. Oh, and they sampled YouTuber Anthony Fantano’s review of their debut album, including his words about their formula being “pretty obvious at this point.” While that’s clearly up for debate, LIVE FAST DIE WHENEVER shows that even if there ever existed a $uicideboy$ formula, it was transformed beyond recognition and completely crushed in “nothingleftnothingleft”—a chaotic tornado that resembles all kinds of alien objects as it mercilessly whirls across punk, hardcore, industrial and nü-metal territories.

Rico Nasty – Anger Management

Anger Management is a meticulously polished collection of chopped-up beats, crawling, distorted basslines, enraged rapid-fire flows, abrasive guitar sounds and weird samples. On this mini album, Rico Nasty blends fiercely disciplined chaos and her trademark “sugar trap” aesthetic into an amalgamation of hip-hop, pop, trap and metal as if they were merely particles of a black glittery eyeshadow. If there was a sonic expression of being stabbed with an embellished heel, Anger Management would definitely be it.

Scarlxrd – FANTASY VXID

With FANTASY VXID, the U.K. rapper Scarlxrd continues pushing his sound—along with the whole genre—forward by merging hip-hop and metal in his own unique way. From guitar-heavy desperation in “FXRTUNE.” to emo-rap and alt-metal echoing in “SAVE YXUR GRACE.,” the masked loner shakes you up with pure rage one minute and crushes your heart in another as his screaming gets constantly overpowered by thick noises and futuristic production. All of that creates a mental image of a tortured human ghost trying to break out of a cyborg alien shell. Like the one on the album cover.

City Morgue – CITY MORGUE VOL. 2: AS GOOD AS DEAD

Allow sandy basslines to crawl under your skin as ZillaKami and SosMula, a hip-hop duo known as City Morgue, attack you with shouted verses, assertive flows and grungy guitar loops. Whether it’s nü-metal-channeling tracks such as “SOUL BURN” and “DIRTNAP” or the emo rap-like “DRAINO” featuring Denzel Curry and “PEELING SCABS,” the overall mood of the album is melancholic and bitter rather than one-dimensionally aggressive as the rappers document both the street life and its imprint on a personal level.

Backxwash – DEVIANCY

Canadian rapper Backxwash fuses hardcore and industrial hip-hop, horrorcore, trap and metal on her full-length debut, DEVIANCY. But it’s not exactly the genre combination that makes the album stand out. It’s more about how these versatile layers are connected into complex yet smooth arrangements with hypnotic electronic loops, guitar squeals and busy basslines. Pay attention to commanding vocal takes that call out homophobia, patriarchy, inequality and narrow-mindedness. Pairing all of that with dark occult symbolism, Backxwash powerfully challenges the status quo—both in the music industry and society.

nothing,nowhere. – “death”

nothing, nowhere. was never a stranger to guitar sound, be it his track with Dashboard Confessional, collab with Fall Out Boy or EP featuring Travis Barker. The emo rapper continues his explorations with a full-band setup. In January, he was jumping around with a Joe Exotic-style wig in the video for his pop-rock single “nightmare.” In April, he dropped “death,” his first-ever trap-metal single. Here, he swaps gentle melancholic sounds for nü-metal aggression, singing to anxious rap flows and screaming, and romantic storytelling for a minimalistic, straightforward depiction of anguish. The word “death,” by the way, makes up nearly one-quarter of the lyrics.

Zheani – Satanic Prostitute

Bubble gum or black metal? Why not both? A messed-up trip of four tracks, Zheani’s Satanic Prostitute EP is a gradually intensifying blend of distorted beats, glitchy noises and unpredictable departures to surreal pop and even drum ’n’ bass. The Australian rapper creates a dark trap fantasy that you can listen to while either summoning your inner cyber goth or doing your casual corpse paint routine. For your ultimate neon-black-metal inspiration, check out Zheani’s “DIRTBIKE” video.

Ho99o9, Ghostemane – “Twist Of Fate/ Cobra”

No wonder Corey Taylor named Ho99o9 as one the acts who are the future of metal. In their collaborative single with Ghostemane, the duo enter the post-genre era with what sounds like a classic Marilyn Manson track stretched out to the point where it almost resembles sludge metal while also featuring hardcore and rap-rock sensibilities that are signature to Ho99o9. Augmented with Ghostemane’s screamed rapid-fire verses, “Twist Of Fate/ Cobra” is a convincing version of what future metal could sound like.

Lil Darkie – THIS DOES NOT EXIST

Innovation has little to do with genre purity. And THIS DOES NOT EXIST, a sour concentrate of trippy and muddy atmospheres, conflicting layers and freaky effects, has nothing to do with it. Even if you have a super-short attention span, Lil Darkie’s sophomore album will sustain your focus up until the end. If you only want to get the taste of it, click play on hardcore/thrash-driven “MOVE BECAUSE YOU CAN.” Yep, it’s a mess. A unique and brilliant mess.

Jade The Nightmare – Psychotopia

Psychedelic death nü metal trap. Sounds random? Sure, Jade The Nightmare’s Psychotopia isn’t for everyone. It’s unruly, heavily experimental and blatantly underproduced. But if you’ve ever been into underground metal, you know it’s an essential part of the vibe. A mind-bending montage of demonic growls, abrasive riffs and distorted beats, Psychotopia paves a dark path toward something yet unknown in trap, metal and alternative.

Russell Brand’s critique of “WAP” went down as well as you’d expect https://www.altpress.com/russell-brand-wap-critique/ Fri, 21 Aug 2020 00:13:24 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/russell-brand-wap-critique/ Comedian Russell Brand is being accused of “mansplaining” Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion‘s viral collab “WAP.”

Brand shared a 17-minute long video on YouTube discussing the single and some aren’t happy with what he had to say.

Since its release last month, “WAP” has been at the center of controversy. Amidst comments from Tiger King‘s Carole Baskin and petitions to remove Kylie Jenner from the video, there’s a whole lot going on.

Now, Brand is including himself in the “WAP” controversy. In a lengthy video, Brand tries to argue on if the video is a “feminist masterpiece” or simply “porn.” He opens up his video with two main questions.

“Do we achieve equality by aspiring to the values established by the forces, or authors, of the hierarchy and system itself? IE, do women achieve equality by aspiring to and replicating the values that have been established by males?”

He then references an article by the Guardian that calls “WAP” a celebration of the “sensuality and sexuality of women.” However, Brand counterargues that the Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion collab is a concept already established by their male counterparts.

“If male hip hop tropes are about the potency of male sexuality… and then the female video is a sort of celebration of sexual potency… it’s an emulation of a template that already exists. And is established by males.”

Brand then goes on to argue that women in music shouldn’t celebrate their bodies and lives through the anti-feminist “male gaze.” Instead, they should find other ways of feminist liberation within their music and creative projects.

“I wouldn’t be so reductive and simplistic to say that women celebrating their bodies using an aesthetic that’s conventionally been associated with the male gaze means it’s impossible that these tools could be used as a vehicle for liberation,” he says.

As well, he says that “WAP” is nothing particularly groundbreaking. In fact, if anything, it’s just another “capitalist objectification” we see in music.

“But I am saying that, in a sense, it’s still the same metric — it’s still the same aesthetic, it’s still the same values, it’s still the same ideals. It’s still ultimately a sort of capitalist objectification and commodification of, in this case, the female.”
