Ice Nine Kills drop ‘Child’s Play’-inspired “Assault & Batteries”—watch https://www.altpress.com/ice-nine-kills-assault-and-batteries-video-childs-play/ Tue, 10 Aug 2021 23:55:08 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/ice-nine-kills-assault-and-batteries-video-childs-play/ Ice Nine Kills have released a Child’s Play-inspired single “Assault & Batteries” from their upcoming album, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood. The new track was accompanied by a highly cinematic music video that continues to build the universe of Ice Nine Kills.

Assault & Batteries” is the second single to be released from the album, set for an Oct. 15 release via Fearless Records. The track follows “Hip To Be Scared.” That first single was inspired by the 2000 Bret Easton Ellis cult-classic film, American Psycho, starring Christian Bale. At the end of “Assault & Batteries,” fans get a teaser clip of detectives looking for a killer who murdered his fiancée, who they refer to as “Horrorwood.”

“It was only one month ago that we painted the walls of Wall Street red with the release of ‘Hip To Be Scared,’” Spencer Charnas says in a press release. “Now, we proudly present ‘Assault & Batteries,’ a brutal ode to an iconic 2-foot-tall demonic doll.”

The new track is also accompanied by a “Nightmare On The Ninth” merch capsule, available here for a limited time. The capsule includes “Chucky Taylor Hi Tops,” a “Bad Guy Blankey” and more.

The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood is set to be the sequel to the band’s 2018 album, The Silver Scream. Proving just how seamlessly horror and hard rock go together, the group takes inspiration from some of the most classic horror stories of all time, including A Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday The 13th, Halloween and It. The band even recorded their 2020 Undead & Unplugged: Live From The Overlook Hotel in the location used in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.

Charnas explained why the band routinely connect hard-rock and horror themes in a 2020 interview with Alternative Press.

“I think the bridge is really that they’re just naturally subcultures,” he says. “They appeal to both metal and punk. These extreme films that are gory can really test what someone can handle psychologically. It’s just that natural community. These filmmakers who are making this dark, gritty, maybe even tongue-in-cheek thing. They get it. They’re the cool cats. And I think because of that, those subcultures will always be married.

“And to me, heavy music or any kind of music—even like Bernard Herrmann, who did the Psycho score—it’s intense, whether that’s classical-sounding music or orchestral,” Charnas continues. “But it gives you that hard-hitting feeling you can’t deny. And that’s what horror does. I think that maybe in the brain chemistry, those two things are very closely interrelated.”

“Assault & Batteries” lyrics:

I’ll be watching over you and every move you make
I may be made of plastic, but I’m wide awake
I’ll be right by your side until the day you die
Your friend until the end, I’m your good guy

Hey, Andy! It’s time to play, motherfucker!
Through a child’s eyes, you’ll find it’s hard to refuse
A friendly freckled face, “Oh honey, isn’t he cute?”
But little do they know, little do they see
That playtime is over, it’s a killing spree!
Bitch!

Na-na-na boo boo, he’s gonna get you
E-V-I-L
D-O-L-L
Na-na-na boo boo, violence and voodoo

You won’t ever grow up
You won’t make it past six
‘Cause this 2-foot tall demonic doll will make you his bitch
You won’t ever grow up
He’ll toy with you till you die
To prove that evil comes in every size

“Mommy, mommy! My doll is alive!”

One child holds the truth, but he’s labeled a liar
One doll dismembered them all!
With no assembly required

They won’t know what to say
They won’t know what to do
‘Cause the carnage continues at a store near you!

Na-na-na boo boo, he’s gonna get you
E-V-I-L
D-O-L-L
Na-na-na boo boo, violence and voodoo
You won’t ever grow up
You won’t make it past six
‘Cause this 2-foot tall demonic doll will make you his bitch
You won’t ever grow up
He’ll toy with you till you die
To prove that evil comes in every size

And once he’s planted his seed, you’ll know your life’s been uprooted
‘Cause safety’s not guaranteed, assault and batteries included
Stitched back together it seems, by the evil bride of his dreams
Heaven help you if you hear him scream:

“Ade due damballa”
(Attention shoppers: one soul left in stock)
“Ade due damballa”
A new kid on the chopping block

You won’t ever grow up
You won’t make it past six
‘Cause this 2-foot-tall demonic doll will make you his bitch
You won’t ever grow up
He’ll toy with you till you die
To prove that evil comes in every size

Na-na-na boo boo, fuck you!

8 artists who shine on TV screens and music venue stages https://www.altpress.com/actors-in-bands-musicians-in-film/ Fri, 02 Jul 2021 16:55:16 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/actors-in-bands-musicians-in-film/ Whether your favorite artist jumped from the stage to the screen or starred in a film and then picked up a microphone, these essential actors proved that they are just as talented in front of the camera as they are in front of an audience. Check out our favorites below.

Thirty Seconds To Mars – “The Kill”

Jared Leto has certainly solidified himself as an actor between his Oscar-winning role as Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club and his polarizing take as the Joker in Suicide Squad. While he was an actor first, breaking out in 1994 as the dreamy Jordan Catalano in My So-Called Life where he (shocker) played a musician bad boy, Leto has successfully split his time between acting and music. In 1998, he launched Thirty Seconds To Mars with his brother Shannon on drums, releasing their self-titled debut in 2002. They followed it up in 2005 with A Beautiful Lie, which debatably houses their best work. Since then, the band have released three more full-lengths, the most recent being 2018’s AMERICA.

Aidan Gallagher – “TIME”

Aidan Gallagher was catapulted into the spotlight as one of the titular characters on Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn in 2014. This was immediately followed up by the much buzzed about The Umbrella Academy, Netflix’s adaptation of Gerard Way’s graphic novel of the same name. Since taking on the role of time-traveling assassin Number Five, the actor has delved even further into his other passion: music. Inspired by John Mayer, Ed Sheeran and, of course, My Chemical Romance, the singer-songwriter kicked off his career with “Blue Neon (Club Version)” in March 2019. Since then, he’s released a handful of singles, including the aptly Umbrella Academy-inspired “TIME” and “I Love You.”

The Aubreys – “Smoke Bomb”

Finn Wolfhard is debatably one of the most recognizable young stars today between roles as Mike Wheeler in Stranger Things and Richie Tozier in the 2017 It remake. Despite his busy acting schedule, Wolfhard has ventured into the world of music, something he can partly attribute to PUP. In 2014, Wolfhard took on the role of young Stefan Babcock in the first of two PUP videos (“Guilt Trip,” “Sleep In The Heat”). While on set, he met drummer Malcolm Craig, who appropriately portrayed PUP drummer Zack Mykula in both videos. The young actors struck up a friendship, later jamming together and forming Calpurnia. Since that band’s 2019 split, Wolfhard and Craig went on to form the Aubreys, crafting catchy indie-pop songs such as “Smoke Bomb” and “No Offerings.”

The Pretty Reckless – “Death By Rock And Roll”

It’s hard to believe Taylor Momsen’s breakout role was as little Cindy Lou Who in 2000’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas, given her full-on grunge status. She would later hit the small screen for Gossip Girl as Jenny Humphrey, the timid younger sister of Dan, in 2007. Two years in, Momsen and her band the Pretty Reckless inked a record deal and dropped their debut, Light Me Up, the following year. In the midst of this, Momsen appeared regularly through season 4, but her role became increasingly more sporadic. It was eventually revealed she was taking an acting hiatus to focus on music, and we’re sure glad she did, dropping three more full-lengths, with the most recent, Death By Rock And Roll, in 2021.

Sons Of An Illustrious Father – “U.S. Gay”

Ezra Miller might be best known as the Flash in the DC Universe (Batman V Superman, Justice League) and as Credence Barebone in the Fantastic Beasts series, but the actor had more humble beginnings. Miller first made audiences uneasy in We Need To Talk About Kevin and then captured hearts as Patrick in the film adaptation of the beloved The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. While they may have been listening to indie mixtapes in the latter, in real life, Miller was making indie music of their own as the vocalist of Sons Of An Illustrious Father. The band dropped their debut Sons EP in 2015 followed by two full-lengths.

She & Him – “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”

While M. Ward and actor Zooey Deschanel came together as indie duo She & Him and released their debut, Volume One, in 2008, this wasn’t the first time Deschanel showed off her musical talents. Many may remember her as the department store elf Jovie who captivates Will Ferrell’s titular character with her “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” performance. However, this wasn’t the first time acting and singing came together for her, as that goes to high school comedy The New Guy in 2002. Deschanel went on to star as quirky characters in titles such as 500 Days Of Summer and New Girl while simultaneously releasing six equally quirky albums under She & Him.

Tenacious D – “Tribute”

Jack Black has been giving the world gut-busting laughs for decades in roles in High Fidelity, School Of Rock, Nacho Libre and Kung Fu Panda among others. In the mid-’90s, Black and bestie Kyle Gass formed Tenacious D, dropping their self-titled full-length in 2001. The 21-track debut was just a taste of the duo’s comedic rock as they’ve since put out 2006’s The Pick Of Destiny (coupled with a film of the same name), 2012’s Rize Of The Fenix, a 2016 live album and 2018’s Post-Apocalypto.

Wallows – “Are You Bored Yet?”

Dylan Minnette is best known as Clay on Netflix’s adaptation of 13 Reasons Why, but his credits stretch over the past 14 years in everything from Prison Break and Lost to Goosebumps and Don’t Breathe. While Minnette’s current act Wallows with co-frontman/guitarist Braeden Lemasters and drummer Cole Preston officially launched in 2017, the trio’s music career spans back even further. They launched the Feaver in 2010, scoring a spot on the Ernie Ball stage of Warped Tour in 2011 and later switched to the Narwhals before settling on their current reincarnation. The indie act dropped their first EP in 2018 and unleashed their debut full-length, Nothing Happens, in 2019. You can also check out their most recent EP Remote as well.

Ice Nine Kills unveil first look at eerie graphic novel ‘Inked In Blood’ https://www.altpress.com/ice-nine-kills-inked-in-blood-graphic-novel/ Thu, 18 Mar 2021 00:36:53 +0000 Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas is a serious horror movie obsessive. The singer fell in love with fright movies at an early age. Over the years, he’s become well-versed in the classics and the deep cuts alike. As a result, INK draws major influences from the genre. The band is immersed in the gruesome and the gory, creating a cinematic atmosphere in their videos and concerts. In fact, the line between the metalcore act and the horror genre is sometimes so thin, it’s kind of spooky.

Well, it looks like things are about to get even scarier. The band is moving into a new realm: comic books.

In an Alternative Press exclusive, Ice Nine Kills offers a first look at their new graphic novel, Inked In Blood. Z2 Comics also shared five pages from the upcoming horror story, and you can only see them here.

Inked In Blood sees Charnas cast in a terrifying nightmare of the band’s own creation. The story was written by the group in partnership with Steve Foxe, creator of Razorblades: The Horror Magazine. The graphic novel will feature art by Giorgia Sposito, a contributor to Titan ComicsDoctor Who series. It will also include material from Andres Esparza, who has worked on Helsing, Heavy Metal and John Carpenter’s Tales Of Science Fiction. Additionally, the graphic novel features art by Phillip Sevy, known for Triage, Tomb Raider and Paradox.

The graphic novel functions as an expansion of the universe created by the band’s 2018 album, The Silver Scream. In the story, Ice Nine Kills bandleader Charnas is put on trial for a series of gruesome crimes. When one of the band’s bullied teen superfans refuses to accept the official story, she lands herself in hot water. Ultimately, the character navigates a life-or-death struggle against a frightening copycat killer.

Charnas notes that comics are the natural progression for the band. “The world of comics has always gone hand and hand with the horror genre I’m obsessed with, so to be creating our own work with the talented people at Z2 is incredible,” he says.

Charnas also gave Alternative Press an exclusive insight into how the graphic novel fits with the band’s approach to storytelling.

Inked In Blood marks Ice Nine Kills’ entrance into the world of graphic novels, a medium which has always been near and dear to me as a horror enthusiast,” Charnas says. “This graphic novel introduces the next chapter for the band, bringing together an infamous frontman, a die-hard fan and a mysterious killer. An extension of the band’s story, this graphic novel also focuses on the most integral part of Ice Nine Kills: the Psychos. Our Psychos play a key role in bringing The Silver Scream to life, and Inked In Blood perfectly captures that.”

Z2 Comics is known for deep connections to the music world, including collaborations with BABYMETAL, YUNGBLUD, Andy Biersack and Poppy. Naturally when it came time for Ice Nine Kills to partner with a brand, Z2 Comics was the obvious choice.

Z2 publisher Josh Frankel says the band are a great fit for their catalog.

“Ice Nine Kills are the perfect band for comics, and their last album inspires all the visuals you could want for four-color horror,” Frankel says. “Inked In Blood has all of the feel of your favorite classic horror flicks. There are no tricks in announcing this Halloween treat for horror and music fans alike.”

Inked In Blood is available in standard softcover edition May 12. There is also a hardcover and limited deluxe edition available directly from the Z2 website. The deluxe slipcase edition features an exclusive vinyl colorway of the band’s 2018 album, The Silver Scream.

More on Ice Nine Kills

Ice Nine Kills formed in 2000 in Boston. The band built a name for themselves over the course of a decade. They toured relentlessly with a number of major rock acts, including Paramore, Thursday, As I Lay Dying and Every Time I Die. They were also regulars on the Warped Tour

The group’s earlier work drew widely from alternative rock, showcasing the sounds of pop punk, emo and ska. This early sound is particularly evident on their 2006 self-released debut album, Last Chance To Make Amends, and their 2007 EP, The Burning.

Starting with their 2010 album, Safe Is Just A Shadow, the group established a more definitive metalcore sound. This style remained prominent in their later releases, especially defining their 2015 Fearless Records debut, Every Trick In The Book.

From their earliest moments, Ice Nine Kills have showcased their love of scary movies and horror. The band’s 2018 release, The Silver Scream, is the ultimate love letter to horror, paying homage to classics of the genre. The band regularly recreates iconic horror ensembles onstage, borrowing the look of Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Jason Voorhees and more.

INK dropped an Itinfluenced video forIt Is The End” featuring JR Wasilewski and Buddy Schaub of Less Than Jake. In 2019, the group released an extended edition of their record, The Silver Scream: Final Cut. That version introduced a number of new tracks, including “Your Number’s Up,” complete with a video paying tribute to Scream.

Ice Nine Kills have been busy in 2021. Spencer Charnas teamed up with Hyro The Hero for “Retaliation Generation.” Ice Nine Kills also released a video for their Valentine’s Day rendition of Elvis’ classic “Can’t Help Falling In Love.”

In a 2020 interview with Alternative Press, Charnas explained why he saw a perfect connection between horror and hard rock.

I think that the bridge is really that they’re just naturally subcultures,” he says. “They appeal to both metal and punk. These extreme films that are gory can really test what someone can handle psychologically. It’s just that natural community. These filmmakers who are making this dark, gritty, maybe even tongue-in-cheek thing. They get it. They’re the cool cats. And I think because of that, those subcultures will always be married.”

Tom Morello has stayed pretty busy over the past few months. Back in January, he teamed up with System Of A Down‘s Serj Tankian for a cover of a Gang Of Four classic. As well, the Pretty Reckless finally unveiled their highly-anticipated collab with Morello which appears on their new album Death By Rock And Roll. Now, Tom Morello has another new project in the works. This week, it was announced that Morello is overseeing all of the music for the upcoming coming-of-age comedy Metal Lords.

The film follows two kids who aspire to start a heavy metal band while in high school. As it turns out, none of their classmates are as passionate about heavy metal as they are. In fact, they don’t really care about the genre at all.

Here are 10 pop culture collabs we need to see Vans do next https://www.altpress.com/vans-collaborations-pop-culture/ Wed, 18 Nov 2020 00:55:49 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/vans-collaborations-pop-culture/ Vans has done amazing, out-of-this-world collaborations to bring fresh designs to shoe lovers and punks everywhere. The company has incorporated NASA and National Geographic all the way to The Simpsons into its brand.

These limited-edition collabs are cute and fun, and they often go for a lot of money on eBay if you keep them in good condition and are ready to part with your kicks. However, there are so many pop culture brands, shows and more that would look fantastic on the iconic slip-on or lace-up Vans.

Read more: 10 artists who should have their own reality TV show

Let’s go off the wall and dream a little bit as we list collaborations we would love to see Vans do next. Who knows? We may see them in Journeys one day.

Blumhouse Productions

Blumhouse Productions crafts horror movies we love, such as The Purge, Halloween (2018), Get Out, Split, Insidious and other blockbusters. Who wouldn’t love to sport Michael Myers-themed shoes year-round to feel spooky AF?

Stranger Things

Frankly, we’re surprised this hasn’t happened yet. Maybe it’s because Nike already ran with the idea in 2019. Even so, the logo for the show alone is worth a design. We can see it now: Stranger Things Vans featuring the Demogorgon, Scoops Ahoy stripes, Eleven’s romper print and more.

Twilight

Imagine the possibilities with this collab. The Twilight book covers are so iconic, so they would look amazing on Vans slip-ons. Many artists make custom shoes and have definitely crafted these vampire-fueled designs to perfection.

Bob’s Burgers

Bob’s Burgers has a huge following who dress up like the characters for Halloween and own the show’s recipe book. There are so many ways to incorporate Fox‘s hit animated series into a shoe design. Let’s start with adorable cartoon burgers.

The Sims

The Sims may be the game that taught many of us how to run our dream household and speak Simlish, but the green diamond would also make a sick design for Vans lace-ups. Also, hardcore Sims fan Bishop Briggs would totally approve of this collab and likely buy several pairs.

Comedy Central

Aside from a dope logo, Comedy Central broadcasts well-loved shows such as South Park, The Daily Show and Nathan For You. 2020 has been beyond rough, so we want to carry something a little funny with us wherever we go.

Daria

We need MTV to make this collaboration happen, stat. Many of us have as much existential dread as Daria, the sassy queen herself. Plus, the animation style is perfect, so we need to rep it on a pair of Vans to show our love.

Fast-food chains

Wendy Gifs GIF by Wendy's - Find & Share on GIPHY

It’s fair to say that there are many people around the world who stan the likes of Wendy’s, In-N-Out Burger and more. If there can be a Taco Bell hotel, there should definitely be shoes with fire sauce on them. Also, 4 for $4’s can absolutely be made high fashion. Vans can do anything!

American Horror Story

Considering there are nine American Horror Story seasons and many more on the way, Vans would have many influences and aesthetics to choose from. With witches, clowns, aliens and ghosts, you can really work with plenty of creepy characters on this collab. In an ideal world, we would have Evan Peters‘ and Sarah Paulson‘s face on the shoes, too.

Stephen King

How cool would it be to rock some Stephen King characters, such as Pennywise, Cujo, Jack Torrance and more, with your outfit? King is a master of horror, and anyone who loves the spooky season and even spookier reads will appreciate these creepy shoes. Even King’s book covers for Pet Sematary and The Shining are iconic and great for design inspo, too.

Which collabs would you love to see Vans do next? Sound off in the comments below!

10 canceled Netflix shows that deserve another shot https://www.altpress.com/cancelled-netflix-shows/ Tue, 03 Nov 2020 23:55:04 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/cancelled-netflix-shows/ The events of 2020 have led us to foster a closer relationship with Netflix than ever before. The streaming giant is always reliable, containing both new and old TV shows and movies to keep us entertained.

The best content on the platform is the Netflix original series, which has brought us some of our favorite shows such as The Umbrella Academy, Stranger Things and You

Read more: ‘Spider-Man 3’ has a shocking moment that not even the cast saw coming

While we’ve grown to love many series since we began our subscriptions, Netflix has broken our hearts more times than ever in the past few years. It’s left us with cliffhangers, unanswered questions and characters we never said goodbye to.

We found 10 canceled series that deserve another shot because Netflix did us especially dirty with ending these shows. You can check that out below.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

While we’re getting amped for Part 4 of Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, we’re also emotionally preparing for the season to be the last. Earlier this year, Netflix broke our hearts by announcing the end, and the breakup has only become more difficult with the lingering confusion. Netflix gave no reason as to why the show is calling it quits. But recently a teaser dropped for Part 4, confirming its finality. However, there are also rumors that the show might move to HBO Max, leaving us a glimmer of hope. For now, we’re just looking forward to reuniting with the cast at the end of December.

The Society

Talk about a cliffhanger. Netflix canceled this dramatic show after one season due to complications from the COVID-19 pandemic. The show follows a group of teenagers who have to start their own community when the outside world, and everyone in it, disappears. The Society was renewed for a second season and set to premiere in late 2020. According to a statement Netflix gave Deadline, though, the pandemic completely changed everything. If you watched the first season, you’ll never forget the cliffhanger that suggests how the teens landed in such an unfortunate situation. It definitely leaves you with more questions than answers.

The OA

If there’s only one show on this list that Netflix brings back, it should be The OA. The sci-fi series was set to have five seasons total, but the streaming giant canceled it after two in 2019. There’s fan outrage, and then there’s what The OA fans did. They started online petitions, bought a billboard in Times Square and held a flash mob in hopes of bringing it back. Some even went on a hunger strike outside of the Netflix offices in protest. Therefore, Netflix needs to finish what it started with the series and put fans out of their misery.

I Am Not Okay With This

When The Society got the ax, so did this other mysterious teen drama that will never give us the answers we deserve. Netflix also canceled this show directly because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which hadn’t been officially picked up for a second season. But how could a second season not happen? We’ll never find out why Sydney (It’s Sophia Lillis) had powers, what happened after the tumultuous ending and what her powers meant in the bigger picture. For peace of mind, we deserve answers from the showrunners. However, let’s hope that somehow, someway it can rise from the ashes.

GLOW

A year after confirming GLOW’s fourth and final season, Netflix betrayed our trust and canceled the show. The Emmy-winning series is loosely based on the ’80s syndicated women’s professional wrestling circuit, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, and has been one of Netflix’s biggest shows across its three seasons. This show deserves a second shot so it can give fans closure and finish what it started. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic affecting Netflix’s decision, we don’t know if that will ever come to fruition.

Teenage Bounty Hunters

Netflix stopped Teenage Bounty Hunters before it even really got a chance to get started. The show, which follows two teenage twins who end up becoming bounty hunters, released its first season in August. By the beginning of October, the streaming service confirmed there wouldn’t be a second season. The show ended with a lot of drama and revealed secrets that we’ll never get to see play out. Aside from the cliffhangers, it was witty, quirky and totally bingeable. It’s a show Netflix definitely could’ve expanded on over time.

October Faction

Netflix also cut this drama series after just one season. October Faction follows a monster-hunting couple and their children, who unveil dark family secrets and the truth about their seemingly idyllic town. While it didn’t get the same hype as some of the other shows on the list, the show, which was based on a comic series, had a lot of potential to be as popular as Supernatural or The Umbrella Academy.

Sense8

Although Sense8 was canceled and given another shot, it wasn’t a proper ending. The show follows a group of mentally linked strangers from different parts of the world. Netflix canceled the show in 2017 after two seasons, but due to outcry from fans, they released a two-hour special in 2018 that served as the season finale. While it garnered a lot of viewership, fans didn’t think the series was completely wrapped up. However, showrunners have continued to give them glimmers of hope that a season 3 might come to fruition one day.

Jessica Jones

Honestly, it’s dumbfounding how Netflix even canceled this badass Marvel show in the first place after its gripping three seasons. Jessica Jones follows a superhero who retires from fighting evil after a fatal incident but returns to defeat her ultimate villain. The show has everything you want—comedy, action and a relatable factor. There have been talks that the show could live on Disney+ due to its Marvel ties.

V Wars

While we’ve been going through an actual pandemic, V Wars was insane because it was about people becoming vampires through a virus, which was leading to a war, humans vs. vampires style. We wanted this to be like a new-age Vampire Diaries meets The Walking Dead, and it looked well on its way to getting there. However, Netflix canceled the show earlier this year despite a wild season finale with major scenes that will never resolve.

10 Stephen King stories that need to be adapted for film or TV next https://www.altpress.com/stephen-king-adaptions-for-tv-film-movies/ Tue, 06 Oct 2020 21:55:42 +0000 Stephen King is one of the most popular and prolific authors in history. As of this writing, the man who reinvented horror for a generation has over 200 novels, novellas and short stories in print. With over 50 of his works adapted for TV and film so far, there’s still plenty more King for Hollywood to mine for its next blockbuster.

With The Stand miniseries set to debut in December, here are 10 of King’s best unadapted novels and short stories that are ripe for the screen.

“Bad Little Kid”

This frightening short story from King’s 2015 anthology, The Bazaar Of Bad Dreams, raises a complicated ethical question. Is the murder of a child ever justified? When attorney Leonard Bradley visits his client, convicted child murderer George Hallas, just before his execution, he’s expecting a confession. However, what Hallas relays to his lawyer is the inexplicable tale of a supernatural entity that’s haunted him since childhood. Featuring King’s creepiest monster since Pennywise The Clown, Bad Little Kid” is gripping, thematically complex and terrifying.

“Home Delivery”

With the continuing popularity of zombies on film and TV, it seems impossible that one of the best stories about the hungry dead written by the world’s greatest living horror author has yet to be adapted for the screen. Yet, that is the case with “Home Delivery.” First appearing in John Skipp and Craig Spector‘s influential Book Of The Dead in 1989 and then in King’s 1993 collection Nightmares & Dreamscapes, “Home Delivery” tells the story of how the zombie apocalypse affects a small island community off the coast of Maine. Poignant and frightening, “Home Delivery” features sympathetic, relatable characters and a unique take on a well-worn genre trope delivered in King’s trademark style.

“I Am The Doorway”

“I Am The Doorway” has been adapted as an independent short. However, this early story from King’s 1978 collection, Night Shift, has the makings of an excellent sci-fi/horror feature. With a plot reminiscent of Nigel Kneale’s Quatermass Experiment, “I Am The Doorway” is the story of a former astronaut whose shattered body becomes the vehicle for an evil alien presence. Evocative of both the cosmic terror of H.P. Lovecraft‘s best stories and the feel of 1950s science fiction, “I Am The Doorway” contains some of King’s most bizarre and compelling imagery.

Insomnia

1994’s Insomnia is a testament to King’s uncanny ability to connect seemingly average people to events with universal implications. Taking place in King’s fictional town of Derry, Maine, the setting of It, with connections to King’s sprawling fantasy series The Dark Tower, the novel tells the story of Ralph Roberts, an aging widower whose insomnia allows him to see hidden aspects of the universe. Drawn into a conflict between godlike opposing forces of the multiverse, Roberts learns about the true nature of life, death and reality. Obviously, Insomnia would pose a challenge to adapt to the screen. However, in the hands of the right director, say, Guillermo del Toro, Insomnia would make for a visual experience containing both spectacle and thematic weight.

The Plant

Originally conceived as a kind of literary Christmas card for his friends, King published the as yet unfinished novel The Plant in three installments between 1982 and 1985. King attempted to publish the novella as an ebook on his website in 2000, charging readers a dollar per chapter on “the honor system.” Sadly, this experiment failed, and King seems to have abandoned the project. Told through a series of letters and memos, The Plant is the story of an editor at a paperback publishing house who receives a strange manuscript along with some disturbing photographs from an apparently deranged author. After contacting the police, the editor receives a weird plant from the enraged author. Although we won’t know how the strange events of The Plant pan out until King decides to finish the now decades-old story, what we have so far definitely seems like it would make a great movie or TV miniseries.

Rage

In the intervening four decades since its 1977 publication, Rage has become King’s most eerily prophetic work. Written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, Rage is a suspenseful novel that deals with the motives of a troubled teen who takes his high school class hostage at gunpoint. Disturbed by the book’s connection to recent school shootings, King has allowed it to go out of print. Nevertheless, a cinematic version of Rage would make a gripping and supremely relevant cautionary tale if its hot-button subject matter were handled by a sensitive filmmaker.

“The Reach”

One of King’s most touching and poetic short stories, “The Reach,” from his 1985 anthology Skeleton Crew, is a poignant tale of dignity in death. Having never traveled from her island home off the coast of Maine, 95-year-old Stella Flanders intuits that her cancer, which she’s kept secret from her family, is in its final stages. Beckoned by the spirit of her dead husband, she sets out alone across the frozen reach to see the mainland before she dies. Spurred on by the singing voices of deceased loved ones, she makes it across. Substituting his typical scares for a real emotional punch, “The Reach” is a classic ghost story that represents King’s often undervalued maturity as a storyteller.

The Regulators

Returning to his Bachman pseudonym, King published The Regulators in 1996 as a “mirror” to his novel Desperation. Although Desperation was adapted as a 2006 ABC television film starring Ron Perlman, The Regulators has yet to find its way to the screen. In the novel, an evil entity known as Tak exploits the thoughts of an autistic child to wreak havoc on an Ohio suburb. Surreal and incredibly violent, The Regulators finds King returning to some of his favorite themes, albeit through the gritty perspective of his Bachman persona.

Rose Madder

https://www.instagram.com/p/CD3-3i0gYAv/

Despite rumblings of a proposed film version in 2011, King’s 1995 novel Rose Madder has so far evaded adaptation. The story of Rose Daniels, a woman on the run from her abusive cop husband, Norman, the novel finds King blending elements of dark fantasy and Greek mythology with realistic settings and subject matter. After taking a job as a hotel housekeeper, Rose trades her wedding ring for a painting of a woman in a rose madder dress. The painting turns out to be a portal to another world and the key to exacting revenge on her murderous husband. Much like Insomnia, a film version of Rose Madder would need the hand of a skilled and imaginative director. Yet, with the right person at the helm and a well-crafted script, the novel would no doubt make a compelling film.

“Survivor Type”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CA3COM3gUcW/

If you’ve ever wondered what Cast Away’s inspiring message of the resilience of the human spirit would be like filtered through the unhinged imagination of King, your answer lies in the short story “Survivor Type.” Featured in King’s 1985 anthology Skeleton Crew, “Survivor Type” is a thoroughly mean-spirited story that has made even the hardiest of constant readers to close the book in revulsion. When the cruise ship he’s traveling on sinks in the Pacific, disgraced surgeon-turned-drug-smuggler Richard Pine finds himself stranded on a desolate island. With few supplies except for his cache of heroin, the desperate doctor resorts to amputating and consuming parts of his own body to survive. Adapted twice as an indie short in 2011 and 2012 and for the upcoming animated The Creepshow Halloween Special on Shudder, “Survivor Type” is definitely deserving of a feature-length treatment. Naturally, there’s no way the Hollywood mainstream would touch this gruesome tale of autocannibalism. However, someone such as Takashi Miike or David Cronenberg could no doubt turn “Survivor Type” into a body-horror classic.
