Adele‘s “Skyfall” and Sam Smith‘s “Writing’s on the Wall” were the first Bond songs to win Golden Globes. They then went on to win Oscars. In fact, six of the last 10 winners for best original song have gone on to win the Oscar. Previously, “No Time to Die” won a Grammy in March 2021 for best song written for visual media.

Hans Zimmer‘s Dune also won the Golden Globe for best original score. Again, this might mean another win is in Zimmer’s future, as seven of the last 10 Golden Globe winners for best original score went on to win the Oscar.

Elsewhere, Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story won best motion picture, while Succession won best drama series.

NBC did not air the Golden Globes on television this year. Instead, the awards were presented at a private event without any celebrities or nominees. The winners were announced on the organization’s website and social media.

The first trailer for ‘Dexter: New Blood’ is finally here—watch https://www.altpress.com/news-dexter-new-blood-first-trailer-comic-con/ Mon, 26 Jul 2021 22:30:27 +0000 Beloved crime drama Dexter is set to return to a television near you Nov. 7 via Showtime. The first trailer was released to audiences July 25, the final day of San Diego Comic-Con 2021.

The events of the new series, coined Dexter: New Blood, are set 10 years after the original. This time, the setting is the small, snowy town of Iron Lake, New York.

The serial killer fans once knew as Miami forensics expert Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall, is now going by the alias Jim Lindsay. He’s a sales associate at a local fish and game store, ironically dating a cop.

In the trailer, we meet Lindsay as he sits in his therapist’s office, telling his counselor, “It’s been a whirlwind,” as clips of what’s to come in the limited series flash across the scene. The visuals make his life seem pretty typical of someone settling down in a small town. He converses with the members of his new community, visits crime scenes and ominously sharpens his knives in tan overalls.

“I’ve always had my demons, and so I went away…,” Dexter continues. “But sometimes, I have an urge too strong to ignore… Every day I walk through this world, faking it, knowing if someone knows who I am, that’s it… This is all about blending in.”

Both Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Debra Morgan, and John Lithgow, the “Trinity Killer,” were absent from the sneak peek. However, both have signed on to reprise their roles. Julia Jones will also be in the revival as love interest Angela Bishop.

The original series premiered in 2006 and ended in 2013, running for eight seasons. The drama won many awards during that time, including two Golden Globes, one for Hall and one for Lithgow. Showtime also received an impressive response for the show. Dexter’s finale was the most-watched broadcast in the network’s history, bringing in 2.8 million viewers.

During the Comic-Con panel, Hall noted how the polarizing fan reaction from the finale was a large part of the reason for creating the revival.

“I think the ending was ‘mystifying’ at best to people,” Hall says. “‘Confounding,’ ‘exasperating,’ ‘frustrating’—on down the line of negative adjectives. And I think this is a show that’s very important to all of us, and the chance to revisit it and, maybe in the process, redefine the sense of the show’s ending and the sense of the show’s legacy more broadly was certainly a part of our motivation.”

During the panel, showrunner Clyde Phillips also weighed in on the new project. Although the events of the series follow those of the original, Dexter: New Blood will be markedly different.

“One of the things that we all agreed on, and Michael really insisted on—and he was completely right—is that this not be Dexter season 9,” Phillips says. “That we acknowledge the truth that time has passed, almost 10 years have passed, and we pick up Dexter in another place, in another world actually, as far away from Miami as possible.”

Halsey announces upcoming album ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’ https://www.altpress.com/news-halsey-if-i-cant-have-love-i-want-power-atticus-ross-trent-reznor/ Tue, 29 Jun 2021 23:33:36 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/news-halsey-if-i-cant-have-love-i-want-power-atticus-ross-trent-reznor/ UPDATE: JULY 7, 2021, 5:00 P.M. E.T.

Halsey officially released the cover art for their fourth album via Instagram. The photographic artwork celebrates the beauty of the body after childbirth and the duality of autonomy. As if depicted by a Renaissance painting, a baby sits on their lap with a curled-over hand and wrinkled blanket.

Of the breathtaking cover art for If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, which was shot by Lucas Garrido, the artist had this to say:

“This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth. It was very important to me that the cover art conveyed the sentiment of my journey over the past few months. The dichotomy of the Madonna and the Whore. The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that can co-exist peacefully and powerfully. My body has belonged to the world in many different ways the past few years, and this image is my means of reclaiming my autonomy and establishing my pride and strength as a life force for my human being.

This cover image celebrates pregnant and postpartum bodies as something beautiful, to be admired. We have a long way to go with eradicating the social stigma around bodies & breastfeeding. I hope this can be a step in the right direction!

My fourth album, out August 27, 2021.”

Halsey has announced their fourth studio album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. The new release will feature production from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails.

Halsey made the June 28 announcement via Twitter, providing an agonizingly short sample of what’s to come from the project. The distorted audio bite seems to allude to a grittier sound from Halsey.

They also posted a video on their Instagram, showing a billboard that teased the album art for If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. The official Nine Inch Nails Instagram account posted an identical video and caption.

If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power follows the 2020 album Manic, which went platinum in the United States. The record was supposed to have an accompanying tour, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the cancellation, this year has been big for Halsey. They started by announcing in January that they are pregnant and then launched their new makeup brand, about-face

Halsey told Byrdie that about-face is largely inspired by the ‘90s music scene.

“I feel like I never really see makeup anymore that’s about being fucked up and dirty and grungy and just wrong, and so much makeup used to be about that,” Halsey says to Byrdie.  “I’m just paying homage to the style of makeup and the makeup influences that I’ve always loved: very ’90s-heavy, very Myspace scene queen, very emo revival.”

Halsey’s new record is in good hands with Reznor and Ross. Along with Jon Batiste, the pair recently won the award for Best Original Score at the 2021 Academy Awards. The duo also took home an award at the Golden Globes for Disney and Pixar‘s jazz-infused Soul. Additionally, they were nominated in the same Oscar category for David Fincher’s Mank.

Reznor and Ross have previously won a Grammy for the score of Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. They also earned an Emmy for the score of Damon Lindelof’s HBO limited series Watchmen.

Additionally, Reznor and Ross released two instrumental albums in 2020 with Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts, which were released for free as gifts to fans during the pandemic.

More new music is possibly on its way from the duo. Reznor hinted about new NIN material backstage following his latest Oscar win.

“Ten years ago, when we did The Social Network, which is the first film that we worked on, it was such a great experience,” Reznor says. “We just came out of it inspired and reenergized, and it was working on a medium we hadn’t done before and learned so much that we felt like, ‘Hey, let’s do a Nine Inch Nails record; let’s go on tour.’

“What we’ve tried to do since then is break it up where we do some rock music, we come back and do some film work,” Reznor continues. “We’ve just done three pretty big films in Watchmen, Mank and Soul in a row. We should be on tour, but COVID has prevented that. We are planning on working on Nine Inch Nails material as soon as, probably tomorrow.”

Nine Inch Nails will be playing live at multiple festivals throughout 2021 and 2022, including Riot Fest and Louder Than Life Festival in September.

Nine Inch Nails will first visit Riot Fest Sunday, Sept. 19, alongside a wide range of artists, including Pixies and K.Flay. They will then play Saturday, Sept. 25 at Louder Than Life Festival alongside Machine Gun Kelly, Asking Alexandria and grandson but not before playing a couple of shows in Cleveland to celebrate their 2020 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The band’s final date scheduled for 2021 will be at Welcome to Rockville, playing on the bill with Deftones, Cypress Hill and Stone Temple Pilots

Nine Inch Nails’ schedule is slated to pick back up in June 2022, when they will play the 15th-anniversary edition of Hellfest. You can get tickets to all these shows here.

Now, H.E.R. has debuted a soulful performance of “Fight For You” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ahead of the 93rd annual Oscars ceremony April 25. During the late-night talk show appearance, H.E.R. was joined by a slew of talented singers, percussionists and horn players who helped bring the song to life.

This year, an array of skilled actors, captivating films and mesmerizing songs are nominated at the Oscars. “Fight For You,” which was written by H.E.R., Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II and Tiara Thomas, is up against some other truly gifted musicians in the Original Song category.

Leslie Odom, Jr. and Sam Ashworth’s song “Speak Now” from One Night In Miami and Laura Pausini’s “Io sì (Seen)” from The Life Ahead are both nominated in the category. As well, Celeste’s “Hear My Voice” from Netflix’s The Trial Of The Chicago 7 and “Husavik (My Hometown)” which was written by Savan Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus and Rickard Göransson for Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga are also up for the award.

H.E.R. opened up her performance of “Fight For You” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon by jamming out on drums before dancing her way to a group of other talented musicians.

“The song was really just representing the themes and what Fred Hampton was about and all of the things he was fighting for,” she tells Jimmy Fallon. “He was not just fighting for the Black Panthers. He wasn’t just fighting for the Black community, he was fighting for social justice and equality all across the board. When people hear this song, the idea was for them to be hopeful and to know that there is hope for our future especially with what has been happening and what we’ve seen in 2020.”

Unlike other television and film award shows, the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ nominees and winners are voted on entirely by their peers. Approximately 160,000 members of the SAG-AFTRA union take part in the voting process each year.

This year, SAG-AFTRA has honored Kaluuya for his role as Fred Hampton in Judas And The Black Messiah. During his acceptance speech, Kaluuya gave a shoutout to all of his fellow nominees in the category. As well, he dedicated the award to his Black Panther co-star and fellow nominee Chadwick Boseman.

You can follow along with the rest of the 2021 SAG Awards winners here and watch Kaluuya’s acceptance speech below.

In Judas And The Black Messiah, Kaluuya plays Fred Hampton, the former Chairman of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party in the ’60s. Hampton was infamously betrayed by William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield) who was an FBI informant. The film details the deception that took place as O’Neal infiltrated the Black Panther Party amid the civil rights protests.

Over the years, Kaluuya has been recognized at the SAG Awards for his work in Marvel’s Black Panther and Jordan Peele’s thriller Get Out. In 2018, he was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Get Out. However, the award was given to Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour. Chadwick Boseman

Back in August, Boseman tragically died at the age of 43 after a long battle with colon cancer. However, while battling the disease, the actor filmed various projects including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which is based on an August Wilson play, and the Spike Lee-directed Da 5 Bloods.

Boseman has made SAG Awards history as the first actor to earn four nominations in one year. Along with his nomination in this category for Da 5 Bloods, he is also up for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Both films are nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

In Da 5 Bloods, Boseman plays Vietnam veteran Commander Norman Earl “Stormin’ Norman” Holloway, a strong mentor and spiritual guide for his friends Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis) and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock Jr.). Holloway appears in flashbacks from the Vietnam War while his friends search for gold they buried while in the service.

Previously, Boseman and his Black Panther co-stars won Best Film Ensemble at the SAG Awards in 2019. While accepting the award, Boseman talked about representation for people of color and first teased Black Panther 2.

Back in December, Sony and Marvel confirmed Boseman will not be recast in the upcoming film following his death. The companies also paid tribute to the actor on what would’ve been his 44th birthday with a new Marvel intro that will play before future Black Panther films.

Boseman’s 2019 SAG Awards speech is available to watch below.

Boseman has already won a few prestigious awards this year. At the Golden Globes, Boseman was awarded Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his portrayal of Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He also won Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards last month. Boseman’s wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted both of the awards on his behalf. As well, he has earned his first-ever nomination at the Oscars. Sacha Baron Cohen

Baron Cohen‘s nomination in this category is for his portrayal of real-life political activist Abbie Hoffman in The Trial Of The Chicago 7.

The Aaron Sorkin-directed film follows the Chicago Seven, a group of anti-Vietnam War activists who were put on trial in the ’60s. They were charged with conspiracy and intention of starting riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Together, the powerful group of actors has earned a Best Cast Ensemble nomination this year. As well, the film’s talented stunt performers are up for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

Additionally, Baron Cohen’s The Trial of The Chicago 7 performance has earned him a Best Actor in a Supporting Role nomination at the Academy Awards.

The Trial Of The Chicago 7 is available to watch on Netflix, and the trailer can be streamed below.

Jared Leto

So far, 2021 has been quite a year for Leto and his return to cinema. It’s been three years since the Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman starred in his last film The Outsider. However, he has certainly stayed busy these past few years on other projects.

In 2018, Thirty Seconds To Mars released their latest full-length AMERICA which features collabs with Hasley and A$AP Rocky. The 12-track LP, which was co-produced by Zedd, earned the band their highest chart debut when it entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2. Previously, LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS debuted and peaked at No. 6 in 2013.

Then, in 2019, it was revealed that Leto was teaming up with Denzel Washington and Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek for The Little Things. After years of anticipation, the crime thriller finally made its debut in January. In the film, Leto plays Albert Sparma, a peculiar man who becomes the prime suspect of a string of killings in Los Angeles in the ’90s.

For veteran police officer Joe “Deke” Deacon (Washington) and detective Jim Baxter (Malek), they must work together to find out if Sparma is the one behind the gruesome slayings or if they simply have the wrong man.

The suspenseful trailer for The Little Things is available to watch below.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Leto has been nominated in this category at the SAG Awards. Back in 2014, he was nominated, and won, for his role as Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club. As well, the film’s actors were up for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, but the award went to American Hustle.

Leto’s acceptance speech at the 2014 SAG Awards is below.

Along with The Little Things, Leto also reprised his role as Joker for Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s been almost five years since DCEU fans saw Leto portray the Prince Of Crime in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. However, Snyder bought back Leto’s Joker back in his recut of Justice League which is streaming on HBO Max.

Leslie Odom Jr.

For Odom Jr., this is his first SAG Awards nomination. The Hamilton star is nominated this year for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. As well, the actors in One Night In Miami are up for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

One Night In Miami, which is actor Regina King’s feature film directorial debut, is a fictionalized account of what happened on Feb. 25, 1964. On that day, heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Liston went up against Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) in a famous fight. In the end, Clay won the championship which kickstarted his successful career.

Odom Jr. plays the American singer, songwriter and performer Sam Cooke. In the film, Cooke, Clay, Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) and Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir) get together to celebrate Clay’s surprise win in the boxing ring. However, One Night In Miami also tackles the racism and protests going on in America at the time. It also depicts Clay’s conversion to the Nation of Islam and his eventual name change to Muhammed Ali.

Odom Jr.’s portrayal of Cooke has already earned him a slew of other nominations this year. He was up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture at the Golden Globes but lost to Kaluuya for Judas And The Black Messiah. “Speak Now,” his song with Sam Ashworth that’s featured in One Night In Miami, was nominated for Best Original Song – Motion Picture. However, Laura Pausini’s “Io Si (Seen)” from The Life Ahead went on to win the award.

At the Critics Choice Awards, Odom Jr. was up for Best Supporting Actor and Best Song. Although he lost the acting category to Kaluuya, Odom Jr. did in Best Song for “Speak Now.” Both Odom Jr. and “Speak Now” are also up for awards at the Oscars.

One Night In Miami is currently available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

Elliot Page discusses filming ‘Umbrella Academy’ after coming out as trans https://www.altpress.com/elliot-page-discusses-filming-umbrella-academy-after-coming-out-as-trans/ Wed, 17 Mar 2021 02:44:43 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/elliot-page-discusses-filming-umbrella-academy-after-coming-out-as-trans/ Last month, the cast and crew of Netflix‘s The Umbrella Academy reunited to begin filming season 3. For the new episodes, Elliot Page is back with the Hargreeves clan as Vanya.

Now, Page has opened up about how filming for The Umbrella Academy has changed since publicly coming out as transgender and non-binary last year.

This month, Page has made history as the first openly transgender man to ever appear on the cover of Time magazine. In the new interview, Page talks about his transition and childhood memories of feeling uncomfortable in his body. As well, Page opens up about returning to the set of The Umbrella Academy.

When Page first learned about the character of Vanya, he instantly identified with her because of how detached she was from the rest of the world.

“I related to how much Vanya was closed off,” Page tells Time.

In just two seasons, viewers have already seen major growth in Vanya. After her suppressed powers took over and ultimately caused the apocalypse in season 1, Vanya manages to find her voice and control her powers in season 2. As a result, Vanya transforms from a character crushed by self-loathing into someone with more self-confidence than ever before.

Similarly, Page’s The Umbrella Academy co-workers have seen a big change in the actor since filming for season 3 began.

“It seems like there’s a tremendous weight off his shoulders, a feeling of comfort,” showrunner Steve Blackman tells Time. “There’s a lightness, a lot more smiling.”

Page further tells Time that returning to the set of The Umbrella Academy has been validating. However, it’s also sometimes awkward as his co-workers adapt to his pronouns.

“It’s going to be an adjustment,” Page says on people addressing him with the wrong pronouns.

Elsewhere in the interview, Page talks about the struggles he faced after the success of Juno. The film, which earned him BAFTA, Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, sent Page into a whole new caliber of fame. As a result, Page felt pressure to act and look a certain way in Hollywood. Eventually, Page began suffering from depression, anxiety and panic attacks as he dealt with society’s expectations to appear feminine.

“[I didn’t know] how to explain to people that even though [I was] an actor, just putting on a T-shirt cut for a woman would make me so unwell,” Page says.

Now, since coming out as transgender and non-binary, Page has received numerous job offers for transgender-related projects. From directing to acting and producing, Page’s team has seen an increase in these offers since Page publicly came out in December. Ultimately, Page’s comfortability with his body has made him look forward to acting more than ever before.

“I’m really excited to act, now that I’m fully who I am, in this body,” Page says. “No matter the challenges and difficult moments of this, nothing amounts to getting to feel how I feel now.”

Page’s full interview with Time is available here and the cover can be seen below.

More on Elliot Page and The Umbrella Academy

Back in 2014, Page publicly came out as gay at Time To Thrive, a conference that promotes the welfare of LGBTQIA+ youth.

“I’m here today because I am gay,” Page said during Time To Thrive. “And because maybe I can make a difference, to help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.”

Since then, Page has heavily advocated for the LGBTQIA+ community over the years. Just last year, Page called out the Trump administration and the politicization of gay rights in America.

“It’s not a debate, whether Donald Trump is racist or not,” he told the Guardian. “Gay marriage is not a debate. And the media needs to stop claiming it is.”

Then, on Dec. 1, Page publicly came out as transgender and non-binary. In a detailed social media post, the actor thanked everyone for their support and the warmth he’s received from the LGBTQIA+ community.

“I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey,” Page said on social media. “I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I’ve been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society.”

The post received love from Netflix and The Umbrella Academy on Twitter which reassured fans that Page would return as Vanya in season 3.

“So proud of our superhero! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT,” The Umbrella Academy‘s tweet said.

“So proud of our superhero! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT! Can’t wait to see you return in season 3,” Netflix’s tweet said.

Netflix has already made changes to Page’s credits on The Umbrella Academy. Now, Elliot Page appears on both the screen in every episode and in the series’ description. Netflix has also updated all of the descriptions on Page’s other projects on the platform including Inception and Tallulah. Earlier this month, Twitter user @rucifurr noticed the changes and decided to tweet about them.

“I’m rewatching The Umbrella Academy and OH MY GOD! they literally edited the whole series to say Elliot Page, not just the little Netflix card. I’m in love with this show the attention to detail is ridiculous.”

In mid-December, Page shared another post thanking fans for their love and support. Shortly after this, even more details about The Umbrella Academy season 3 were revealed. In January, fans finally met the actors playing the members of the Sparrow Academy. As Blackman previously confirmed, season 3 picks up right after that massive season 2 cliffhanger.

After returning from Dallas in the ’60s, the dysfunctional Hargreeves siblings think they’re back in the present time. However, as Number 5 warned, their tampering with time travel has consequences. As a result, Sir Reginald Hargreeves went on the create the Sparrow Academy instead of the Umbrella Academy. The powerful group includes six new individuals along with Ben Hargreeves who is completely different from the character fans loved in previous seasons.

No. 1 or Marcus is being portrayed by Justin Cornwell while Justin H. Min‘s Ben is returning as No. 2 in the Sparrow Academy. Britne Oldford is portraying No. 3 or Fei and Jake Epstein is taking on the role of Alphonso, also referred to as No. 4. Some fans many recognize Epstein for his long on-screen portrayal as the teen heartthrob Craig Manning on Degrassi: The Next Generation.

The Sparrow Academy’s No. 5 or Sloane is being played by Genesis Rodriguez and Cazzie David is Jayme or No. 6. However, the Sparrow Academy’s No. 7 is raising some eyebrows. The final member of the academy is Christopher, an “existential dread-inducing psykronium cube.”

Currently, the actor behind this mysterious cube is unknown. However, Deadline reports that the character will have a voice. All of this has led to speculation that The Umbrella Academy co-creator Gerard Way may finally make his highly-requested cameo in the series and appear as No. 7. So far, however, nothing has been confirmed.

As filming for season 3 got closer, The Umbrella Academy began sharing even more behind-the-scenes details. Back in January, Min confirmed that the first table read-through for the season had happened. Shortly after, Min shared a few videos on Instagram of him uniting with his new Sparrow Academy family for production rehearsals.

When production for the new season finally began, the Sparrow Academy assembled to show off some new attire. All of the members except for the actor voicing Christopher teased the start of filming with matching jackets that have the Sparrow Academy’s logo on the front. Of course, many fans have already seen this new symbol thanks to that difficult season 2 Easter egg hunt.

“Let the games begin,” Min said on Instagram.

More recently, in mid-February, Page confirmed he was back on the set of The Umbrella Academy. He posted a cryptic photo of a director’s chair with the new season 3 logo. Page captioned the image with “OMG we’re back again,” which is a reference to Backstreet Boys‘ iconic song “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).” It’s also a callback to season 2 when Robert Sheehan‘s Klaus incorporated pop song lyrics such as these throughout the episodes.

Chadwick Boseman wins Best Actor at the 2021 Critics Choice Awards https://www.altpress.com/chadwick-boseman-wins-best-actor-at-the-2021-critics-choice-awards/ Mon, 08 Mar 2021 07:52:33 +0000 Late actor Chadwick Boseman has officially won the award for Best Actor at the 2021 Critics Choice Awards.

The Black Panther star was nominated for his powerful portrayal as Levee in Netflix‘s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Back in August, Chadwick Boseman tragically died at the age of 43 after a long battle with colon cancer. However, while battling the disease, the actor filmed various projects including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Last weekend, he posthumously won the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes for his role in the Denzel Washington-produced film. Boseman’s wife Taylor Simone Ledward gave a touching speech as she accepted the award on his behalf.

Now, Boseman has also won Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards. The Marvel star was nominated among the likes of Tom Hanks, Ben Affleck, Riz Ahmed and Anthony Hopkins in the category. As well, Boseman was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Spike Lee‘s Da 5 Bloods. He was also part of the Best Acting Ensemble nominations for both Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Ledward accepted the Critics Choice Best Actor award on Boseman’s behalf. During her moving speech, Ledward thanked all of the people in Boseman’s life that supported him over the years.

“It is so hard to find a celebratory feeling in these moments as proud as we are of him. Yes, for his work but even more just for who he is as a person. His work deserves this, his work in this film deserves this, he deserves this. So, he would always thank God first and foremost in everything. He would always honor his mother and his father. He would always acknowledge those who came before him, those who chartered the path, those who gave him their gifts.

[Chad] may say something about the importance of this story, about the importance of black voices telling black stories. He may take this moment to give honor to August Wilson, one of the greatest playwrights of our time. As I recently read, societies grow great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they may never sit. Our society may be a far cry from great, but I know that the seeds you planted will grow into forests. One day, we too will be tall enough to reach the heavens. Thank you Critics Choice and thank you, Chad.”

Last month, the Critics Choice Association honored Black artists in cinema at the Celebration of Black Cinema event. During the ceremony, Boseman was awarded Performance of the Year for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom are the last projects Boseman filmed before his death. However, Marvel fans haven’t seen the last of him just yet. Boseman’s T’Challa will appear in the new Disney+ series What If…?. As it turns out, Boseman’s T’Challa voice appears in various episodes of the animated show.

As for Black Panther 2, Marvel Studios and Sony have confirmed Boseman is not being recast. Shortly after Travis Barker helped honor the late actor at the MTV VMAs, Marvel paid tribute to Boseman in a new Black Panther intro.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods are both streaming on Netflix.

Nine Inch NailsTrent Reznor and Atticus Ross took home an award for the Disney film Soul. As well, the awards show made history in the Best Director category for a few reasons.

2021 marked the first-ever bi-coastal Golden Globes ceremony as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took on the hosting duties in New York City and Los Angeles.

This year marked some big wins for streaming services. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video, took home two awards for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Sacha Baron Cohen‘s starring role.

In typical Borat fashion, Cohen used his speeches to talk about the political climate in the United States. He briefly explained why he decided to release the movie before the 2020 Presidental election and thanked Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump‘s attorney, for his unforgettable appearance in the film. He even thanked the “all-white” Hollywood Foreign Press who recently came under fire for their lack of diversity.

“Thank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press,” he says. “I’ve got to say this movie couldn’t have been possible without my co-star, a fresh new talent who came from nowhere and turned out to be a comedy genius – I’m talking of course about Rudy Giuliani.”

Chadwick Boseman won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on behalf of the Black Panther star who passed away from colon cancer last year.

“He would thank God [and] would thank his parents [and] would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices,” she says. “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you, ‘You can,’ that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history.”

She goes on to thank Boseman’s co-stars, mentor Denzel Washington and more in the speech.

“I don’t have his words,” she continues. “But we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love, so thank you HFPA, for this opportunity to do exactly that. And, honey, you keep ’em coming. Thank you.”

Nine Inch Nails’ Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor were nominated in the Best Original Score category twice this year for Disney’s Soul and Netflix’s Mank. Ultimately, the duo, and collaborator Jon Batiste, took home the award for Soul. Soul also won a Golden Globe over the weekend for Best Motion Picture – Animated.

This latest win marks the second Golden Globe award for Ross and Reznor. Back in 2011, they won the Best Original Score category for their work on The Social Network. Over the years, their scores for Gone Girl and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo have also been nominated.

In his acceptance speech, Reznor expresses his gratitude for being part of a theatrical project his kids could actually see.

“Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press Association, it really means a lot,” he says. “Also, I think this is the first piece of art I’ve ever made in my life that I can actually show my kids so thank you Pixar.”

Over the years, Trent Reznor has appeared on eight different Alternative Press covers. He first appeared on the cover of AP with Nine Inch Nails back in 1990. Since Issue #31, he has appeared on various other covers and currently holds the record for the second-most AP cover appearances. Currently, Andy Black of Black Veil Brides holds the record for most cover appearances.

Along with all of this, Chloe Zhao became the first Asian woman to win Best Director at the Golden Globes. Her film Nomadland also won Best Motion Picture – Drama. 2021 marks the first year three women were nominated in the Best Director category at the awards show.
